One I remember we did was to swipe (british: steal) loads of flashing roadworks lights and spend a while synchronising them to an in sequence strobe effect along the lnegth of the halway..
Dry ice and liquid nitrogen were good ones with my chem. eng. room-mates but I'm a computer guy.. I don't see too much of that these days.. mh Cray XMP is still in the posr...
"That's totally impossible. Even if you had a trillion dollars it'd be impossible."
Totally agree.. that is utterly insane and any team that *could* do it would certainly be worth much more than $10,000
"more likely, is trying to encourage someone to spend 15 days obfuscating WINE to deliver it to him so he can start selling and then plausibly deny it when it comes up."
I;m currently working for WMS Gaming.. the company Williams became... turns out video slot machines (the gambling variety) are *way* more lucrative than pinball machines which is a *real* shame because *my* 10p's invariably end up in the pin tables no matter what's new fangled video game is sitting next to them..
Yup.. let's take everything we (the science guys) invented back from the religious nuts, ship ourselves out somewhere nice like Australia and let 'em just get on with it themselves.
Cure for blindess.. well.. we got one.. but we needed to borrow a few stem cells.. so you wont be wanting that one huh ?
CD players.. oops.. LASERS.. sorry.. based on theories (and remember.. they're only *theories*, right) which don't seem to involve God in the creation and maintenance of the universe.. so we'll have that back then.. ta..
Antibiotics.. hmm.. but if you got fatally ill then surely it's God's will.. and who are we to question his (intentional case) wishes..
You keep the chickens.. we'll go with the Alligators.. apparently they turn into chickens anyway if you leave them long enough...
.. but don't you think this is exactly the kind of thing that we just have to take from the people who developed it and give to all mankind ??
I mean really.. can we honestly sit back and allow a corporation to dictate the terms of survival.. to put a cash value.. to look for shareholder value from developments that might conceivably raise such a large proportion of the the world out of subsistence poverty... ?
And why aren't our governments beating these guys to these kind of developments anyway ? We just put a probe on a moon a gazillion miles away.. why aren't we throwing the same kind of money into a more nutritous grain of rice for everyone down here.. open source genes..
.. but all the same.. don't you ever wonder.. with all the productivity benefits the new technology brings why is it that we seem to be working harder for longer for less benefits, less pay and less holidays than we ever did before..
It's really about time we started to seriously question what it's all for people..
Are you kidding ? One look at the A-Team and there's noooo way they'll be wanting to pick a fight with us.. any race of beings than can construct a working atomic battle tank complete with grenade launcher and working DU-round ballistic cannon from the contents of the average henchmans backyard shed is *not* worth going toe to toe with... and I _pity_ the fool who tries to get B.A. up in that spaceship...

Ethanol doesn't go on for billions of base pairs and look very much like someone's designed a method for encoding, correcting and replicating living things.. it's algebra protein data transmission.. I'm not sure mr occam's sharpened the blade enough on this one yet...
That's actually one of the most pertinent points regarding the process I've heard for a long time. Seen the situation so many times where companies spend huge amounts of time debugging, special casing and just generally mangling a bad design when they really should have stopped, took on board the lessons learnt and re designed with those in mind rather that attempting to jerry rig the existing code.
"There's a certain critical mass below which file sharing networks aren't generally useful. There's also a certain critical mass above which they become utterly use-less." - Bradshaw's Corollary.
The trick is to keep your favoured network comfortably in the margin. Word of mouth will generally get it up to the the first, useful, mass. Publicity like this will take it beyond the second. Until someone designs the perfect scalable, mutating network we'll have to keep network hopping, staying one step ahead of the crowd who just wanna download Limp Bizkit and Jenna Jameson, in order to keep the peer set down to those people (mostly other geeks) with something genuinely interesting to share.. and members of Deviance, FLT etc..:-)
The article, I believe, is intended to be humourous. As you'd expect from the less than serious Reg.
Bet on ITER...
What are the best party tricks for the geeks ?

Give me 40 GB and decent audio output on a PDA and I don't think I'd bother carting a player around with me as well.
'Course.. ubiquitous wi-fi and a route back to my media server at home would make local storage a moot point against it's network based equivalent.
As Nietzsche said:

Nail. Head.
This "Machine" is going to anticipate me throwing an axe through it's ethernet spur is it ?
It's also going to be so complex that it wont give the same answer to the same question ? Not much bloody use as a computer then is it.. ?
Mid-state accounts receevable in da house..
But I kinda like Smoove too.. and then I will fuck you like a wildebeast.
Just for the record.. Concorde was Anglo-French..

With the exchange rate currently running at ~$1.8/£1..
Plus.. I *rarely* max out my 1mbps line as it is.. who's going to have a good use for this.. (I don't use BitTorrent, mind.. the donkey does for me).

Honestly..
Actually Tannebaum is very partisan.. he happens to be batting for the right side in this instance though.
There's really not much call for that kind of dental work over this side of the pond..
