I worked as admin of a mid-sized ISP in Texas when I did this.

Out of frustration one day, I blackholed all APNIC addresses(all of Asia's IPs) and the reduction in SPAM that resulted, was amazing. The filters and RBL's caught everything else and my users enjoyed very little to no spam for a while. That is til some jerk needed to email Hong Kong....the ban was lifted and the spam started flowing in.

I'm not one for censoring whole regions, but this does work. If I knew no-one needed email correspondance with Asia at my current job, I'd blackhole them again.

They are not "in your face", nor are they deceptive. The ads are relevent to the content and I don't mind being subjected to them. As for the punch the monkey or "your system is insecure" guys, I would never purchase their product and I would never intentionally click on it. I don't feel bad about blocking something I view as unethical.

I'm not spying on their mail, however I am intercepting it while in transmission...It makes me wonder what my (or my employer's) legal liability is given I have no malicous intent.

It sounds to me like this guy just needs a quality HDD and good tape backup. Do not put your faith in RAID, put in a good off-site backup. I've seen RAID solutions fail to many times. I've seen RAID solutions fail twice recently. The first one was a company with a slick server and nice hot-swappable SCSI drives but their controller card went out. It was replaced by the manufacturer but the techs were unable to recover the data. Next one happened when a machines case fan went out and the mirrored HDDs cooked themselves to death. The moral of the story: NEVER TRUST RAID and as always keep a backup.

The phone company has been using DSL internally since 1992. At the time they had no incentive to sell cheaper broadband since they were making plenty of money selling T1s. There never ever was any fair competition. Initially the Bells were not allowed to sell DSL to foster competition. To escape this provision of the law, SBC created a company called ASI to destroy competition. While a seperate company legally, ASI technicians drove a Southwester Bell van, wore a Southwestern Bell uniform and serviced their connections first. I'm surprised no one has mentioned RFC 2505: Anti-Spam Recommendations for SMTP MTAs: http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc2505.html

ISPs and mail providers following these recommendations can prevent most illegitimate spam(forged headers, open relays), and completely prevent what happened here. Unfortunately, large providers cannot follow these recommendations, due to the large volume of legitimate mail that gets blocked from systems with ignorant admins. The former ISP I worked for decided to implement some of the measures in RFC 2505 and began verifying PTR records (reverse DNS)....I never had to take so many calls from pissed customers not recieving their mail. I was threatened by an admin US Department of Education, who, in a most impolite fashion told me to fix our problem(we don't need no stinkin PTR records).....not to mention the University of Texas, Texaco, and so on. Soon the ISP relented, the spam came flooding back in and we were back where we started. I don't see the need for a new system.....just better admins.
