It's free when you take the book out of the library and read it.
It's controlled because the library had to buy the book. Or lease it. Or get it donated by someone who bought it.
I remember air travel before deregulation a little differently. I could go to La Guardia and buy a standby ticket to Chicago which was good on any 4 or 5 different airlines so it was a rare case when I had to wait more than 2 hours. I remember airlines fighting for passengers to Florida and cooking steaks on the plane for the passengers. I don't remember it being nearly as big a hit on my budget then as it does now (and my budget then was a whole lot thinner than my budget now).
Seven years ago when I was on a jury the judge made it a point to tell us that we were not allowed to do certain things including 1) Visting the crime scene and 2) Looking for old newspaper stories about the crime. Doing this would constitute misconduct and possible contempt of court penalties. Today I would expect the bailiff to take control of cell phones etc.
The first car I had with a computer controlled emissions system had an open interface. Connect a jumper between two terminals in the fuse box and count the flashes of the Check Engine light. Very similar to the Power On Self Test beep system on my first IBM PC that I got 3 years later. Jumper between two others and the codes were reset. There being no Google at that time, you had to have a printed document that explained the codes. It was called a "Shop Manual" and available for purchase. Some public libraries had "Chilton" collections which contained a lot of the same information.
People who act badly need to be called on it. If public humiliation is the only avenue then do so.
People who don't call others who act badly also need to be called on that. The 2nd grade crap about not being a "tattle tale" stays around and Kitty Genovese ends up dead because no one wanted to get involved.
The number of mutants/km2 in Fort Bend County alone should be enough to convince anyone not on the state Board of Education that mutations are real and ongoing.
I'd be surprised if the data package that iPhone users get isn't being subsidized by those who don't consume a Windows-sized portion of bandwidth. Now that the bait has been taken and the hook is set it's time for ATT to start reeling in the line and adding usage-sensitive billing the way that VZ does with its DSL service.
I have Documents to Go on my Centro. It has its uses but they are very limited. Google Docs would be equally useful if I ever found a use for a browser on a cell phone.
The Palm people -- all their pieces and parts since they split the hardware from the OS and then killed the OS and began to make crappy hardware that they don't support -- have got to be robots. They're so stupid they obviously can't breathe on their own.
"No one talks about it," agreed Scott Martin, a Lancaster County commissioner who wants to expand the program. "Because people feel safer. Those who are law-abiding citizens, they don't have anything to worry about."
I just hope that the camera captures Mr. Martin canoodling about town.
It doesn't matter how fast the processor runs if the software is pissing cycles away with frivolities. And it doesn't matter how much memory the machine has if the OS is thrashing about trying to find space for another application kept open.
In the same way that the question "What did I hear you say?" is absurd (How can anyone know what I hear?), so too is the notion of protecting Neil Armstrong's boot print and the rest of the Apollo landing sites. If no one can explore them, of what use is it to protect them for historical or scientific purposes.
I've had a EEE PC 1000 Linux for a little less than year. Being essentially lazy, I haven't put forth the effort needed to tweak the distro -- I've left it pretty much alone. If Asus wanted to make inroads with this, they would need to provide more than half-baked support for it. They did a good job of providing an automatic system to get updates but no way to customize it for your system so I'm continually nagged to install upgrades for Chinese input switching that I don't need, fixes to the display on the 900 models, etc. Not providing that support, it isn't surprising that the forums are filled with unhappy people.
I've been keeping records of miles traveled and gallons of gasoline/gasohol purchased since I bought my most recent car at the end of 2007. When the state of PA started allowing "up to 10%" ethanol, my mileage started dropping. Last month I found a station that has ethanol free gasoline and my mileage went back up to where it had been. I figure that ethanol gasoline costs me almost 1 cent per mile more than regular gasoline despite the lower cost per gallon for the gasohol mix.
Saturday I got my chain saw back from the shop. The fuel line was being eaten away from the inside and gunking up the fuel filter. Man said he's been seeing a lot of this since ethanol was introduced.
As if any was needed. The splash screen took over input while waiting an eon for the plugin to load should have been a capital offense from the outset.
Other than that it's just a way to remember the insurance salesman from Groundhog Day

That's the problem with everything. There's always a few who will take a short term gain even knowing that, in the long run, everyone -- including themselves -- will be fucked. http://www.garretthardinsociety.org/articles/art_tragedy_of_the_commons.html
I'd have been surprised if they DIDN'T find anything.
Oh great! Now everyone will HAVE to watch that old Big Brother ad.
I don't have an EZPass, but if it relies on this spectrum that would be a serious drawback -- politically speaking.

Someone needs to stand up there and tell the boss man that "I could run this effing company better than you could."

My guess would be that MS won't be all that unhappy if people get the idea that XP is "dangerous" compared to Vista and 7.
Anyone who doesn't insist on a paper ballot should be disqualified as a voter on the grounds of incompetence.

I'd be satisfied with that Catwoman
When the time comes to pay for it, it will be unmistakable.
