First and foremost, I am sorry for the loss of your home. The best suggestion I can give you is:
Get a copy of the Fire Marshal's report that specifies the source of the fire being the laptop in question, deliver it to your insurance company, and then go talk to a lawyer.
It sucks, but as an individual, you have less a chance of gaining the attention of the company in question (never mind the/. post) than the lawyer pool of your insurance company will.
They need to pick somebody other than Al "I created the Internet" Gore if they plan on making us take the topic seriously. They also need to start putting in the words "possibility" and "prediction" and not treat their statements and preductions as fact. Didn't Al Gore say that 2006 was supposed to be the worst Hurricane season ever? Well, umm, it ends on Thursday and we're *way* below average. No Cat 4's or 5's, and only one hurricane in the Golf of Mexico.
I get that the globe is warning up; that's fine, we can show that over time, that this is true, but take a look at a few decade back; we have proof that the globe was cooling down. I get that we want to cut down on Carbon emissions because we *think* that it *might* be a factor in warning the globe. I'll go with that too. I don't believe that mankind, in specific, that the US is the main reason for the global temperature warming up, but I'll play along.
So what are we to believe? Warming or Cooling? The temp may have been going up over the last 30 years, but the Atlantic current is slowing and that shows signs of a cool down (last mini-ice age ended near 1776) The Models are too long term to be taken seriously. Example: here in Chicago, they predicted that the weather on Tuesday would be a high of 62 and then on Wednesday, the weather would be in the 30's. Now, today, it is Tuesday and the weather it was a high of 65 and now it is supposed to be in the high 60's on Wednesday and the snow won't be here until Friday. It's a simple shift of 2 days in the weather pattern, but magnify that margin of error over decades and you see why we scoff and predictions of "doom and gloom", world famine etc., for 30 years out. They are far fetched and cannot be proven with any facts or hard data. The best we can hope for is short term predictions, but even those are wrong (this years hurricane season and this weekends outlook)
Bring forth somebody without an agenda (political or otherwise), somebody who isn't trying to say "do it my way or we all die", somebody who can explain the facts, the opinions, and the predictions, and not get them confused, and *maybe* the topic will be taken seriously by all. I for one would make an effort to really listen and not cringe and think "oh great, another wack-job tell me that cow farts are killing the ozone". Until then, I'll just sit back and laugh at Al Gore and his prediction of "the earth will end in 10 years... just like I did at Ted Danson and his 10 year prediction... 12 years ago...
It is this attitude, and the scary fact that it was modified to +5 Insightful, that worries me about society today. You act as if they have a God-given-right to work at Apple; they do not.
They did something wrong. They were punished for it. End of story. Apple did not over-react, they did what they needed to do for employees that broke the rules and regulations of Apple. I personally would have fired them and them followed up with a lawsuit against them; but perhaps Apple dropped the lawsuit since they came forward on their own.
If they were fired for no reason what-so-ever, then we would have a real story. What we have now is the whining of somebody who doesn't like that he is being held accountable for his own actions.
If they didn't want any of these problems then perhaps they should not have dome something wrong in the first place.
It's an arms race against those that would forge a US Passport; they are using technology to make the Passport better. We know they are being faked right now under the current technology, so now they have added this chip with a digital picture of you to make it harder for them to duplicate.
Will it eventually be hacked/copied? Yes. Does that mean we throw up our hands in the air and stop trying? Taking a defeatist attitude gets us nowhere. When this one gets hacked, we'll add more forgery deterrents. Take at look at the US currency; its the same thing.
It is just one more tool we can use to keep pace/ahead with those that want to forge them.
I hate replying to my own posting, but I read the Reuters article from a previous poster and found this:
The judge also denied EchoStar's request that the injunction be stayed pending appeal, making it difficult for EchoStar to continue offering its subscribers' DVR functionality without striking a quick licensing deal with TiVo or another DVR maker.
IANALBTW but I've seen it a few times in my wife's law practice; a client will use the full force of the law to get a judgement in their favor. Then, behind closed doors, they use the leverage of that judgement to negotiate a deal in their favor.
TiVo would be wise to take this approach. Now that EchoStar has been beaten, TiVo has the ability to force EchoStar to sit down at the negotiating table and ink a deal that would put TiVo software and TiVo IP, under a paid license of course, into the homes of all those EchoStar customers. For them, its a ready made customer base and it makes them look magnamious in their 'victory' over EchoStar.
DDO had the loot system done right. Despite the many flaws of that game, taking all loot distribution of the hands of the players and leaving it up to the CPU to figure it out made the quests a lot more enjoyable.
Hezbollah has seats in the Lebanon Government; therefore they are part of Lebanon. In addition, Hezbollah does take orders from their primary benefactors... that would be Iran in case you missed the memo.
Israel withdrew from Southern Lebanon in compliance with a UN resolution; the so-called "Land for Peace" act. It was obviously a stupid move since Lebabon was not ready to assume control over their own country. Once they left, Hezbolla started assaulting Israel again.
Didn't you find it interesting that of the 1600+ missles that Hezbolla has launched at Israel since this more recent conflict has started, not a single one of them was launched at their military? Even when Israel was staging their tanks up on the border, making for a perfect and easy target, the Hezbollah missles continued to land in the population areas.
Hezobllah's stated goal is the death of every Jew. They preach a doctrine that the Holocaust of WWII is "a European lie and conspiracy to take land from the Arabs and Persians". There are, maybe 5 million Jew's in Israel and over 500 million gentiles around them that want them all dead. *THAT* is what they are defending themselves against.
Their actions are defensive and justified. If there is going to be peace, Hezbolla needs to stand down, disarm, and give back Lebanon to the Lebanese people.
As to these points from you:
Israel is bombing Lebanon "in order to save Israeli lives". Why are Israeli lives inherently more worth than Lebanese lives?
Nobody said they were, but Israel is defending its people from Hezbolla. That means war.
Why should we accept that Israel is murdering innocent people just to increase it's lebensraum?
Nice... a Nazi reference, that really makes your argument so much stronger.
And what "restraint" are you talking about? That they haven't been putting Arabs in gas chambers, yet? At this pace, they soon will!
Seriously! This is Poland 1939 all over again!
First, it is sickly ironic that you are talking about the gas chambers when most of the Middle East belives that it never happened in the first place.
Second, you are making wild assumptions about something Israel has not done and would never do. If you plan on being taken seriously, don't make arguments like this.
It might just be possible that Yahoo! could get purchased by Microsoft as well. If they do, it gives us a wide range of new name possibilities to think about:
It would explain why those damn Canadian Geese have been landing in my pond more and more instead of continuing on down south. Too bad we can't use their poop as fuel, we would never want for petrol again. Ever.
If you just laughed, then you must have seen the same mess I do every year. yuk
The main difference between the IE7 search box and the Firefox and Opera search boxes is that the IE7 search box comes preloaded with only one search provider: MSN. Firefox and Opera both include a half-dozen or so providers when you install them. (You can add additional search engines in all three.)
Everybody is missing the primary point. You almost got it right, but your first sentence went a few words too long.
The main difference between the IE7 and the Firefox and Opera is that the IE7 search box comes preloaded.
IE will come with any new OS. Firefox and Opera will not.
IE is, by definition a Default & Preset. IE is forced upon you, Firefox and Opera is chosen.
I like the concept of coming up with a standard rating system where websites can set flags based on their content. It would make it easier for us (as parents, not the government) to regulate what our kids watch/view/read online.
I, however, want to see if voluntarily implemented and balk at government enforcement.
a) It would be impossible to enforce
b) There are better things we should be spending the money on. (like closing up the border from ILLEGALS)
c) Being a conservative, I believe in smaller Government, not bigger. I don't need somebody telling me how to raise my kids... that's the job of me and my wife, not a bureaucratic panel that we didn't vote into power.
Padron the botched quote. Perhaps the quality and variety of the games are dropping and players don't want to play version 9 of a game that was never really all that good to begin with.
I love my 15" Powerbook (PPC). Awesome battery life, great feel on the keyboard, bright screen, it runs fast and does what I want it to.
I love Apple.
...at least until that keyboard had a problem. I dropped a pen on the keyboard and in what can only be seen as a freak accident, it wedged itself between two keys and popped one of them out. No biggie I thought, I'll just put it back. Unfortuantely, one of the little plastic cross-tabs had broken in the process.
I called up Apple Support, game them the number for my Apple Care Extended warrenty, and instead of them happily sending me a new key to replace the old one, I got bitter sarcasim, accusations of being "too rough" on the hardware becuase "this does not happen under normal conditions", and a geneally piss-poor attitude....and this was after I had been transfered up to a Manager because of their response on how to fix it.
For a single key that popped off the keyboard, I needed to pack up the entire laptop and send it in for repair. I was told I should have it back within 10 business days.
Yeah. That was my reaction too. 2 WEEKS of downtime and shipping expense to replace a single key.
It really isn't all that hard to switch. The switch would be easier to do if a single industry helped out: The gaming industry.
I do all my coding work, email, IM'ing, etc., on a Linux laptop. Fedora Core # on an Inspiron 8200
I do all my graphic work on a Max Powerbook 15" (PPC)
I do all my gaming on an XP WinTel machine. If it weren't for my gaming addition, I would have stoppped using Windows a LONG time ago.
True, Blizzard has brought out WoW for Mac, but they are only one out of hundreds of games. If all the gaming companies, MMO, 1st person shooter, etc., would start making copies of their games available for PC on an equal basis to OS X, you would see the flip happening a lot faster.
The new MacTel machines give me hope that the porting will increase. Time will only tell.
Looking at it from TRU's perspective, Amazon.com did a lot of damage to Toys 'R' Us by watering down their Corporate Brand. First, by associating them online with Amazon.com (TRU's fault) and second, by having the same type of retailers in the same web space.
TRU became, in perception, just another tab on Amazon.com and less than what they should have been; The Number One toy retailer.
This break should allow them to regain their independent corporate identity.

Lets go a step further... why not slap the Movie rating system over the Game rating system!?
GTA = R
Mario Brothers 3 = PG (animated violence)
Wii Sports = G
Well, you get the idea. If everybody in the US & Canada understands that system, why not just use it?
