  1. Re:Cheap Site on Web Design on a Shoestring · · Score: 1

While learning from references might seem hard at first, I find that references are better because you remember your mistakes and accomplishes and learn faster than following HelloWorld1, HelloWorld2, etc. that an author presents in a book. I guarantee you that you will learn better and faster writing your own code from references than memorizing examples found in books. I tried books and found that they are a waste a money.

  4. Editors? on Mozilla Drops Support for International Domains · · Score: 2, Insightful

Doesn't Slashdot have editors that are supposed to analyze and edit user postings. "Dropping" and "disabling" mean two different actions. I got confused for a second or two. Lately, Slashdot quality has been going down the tubes.

  6. NSA == Spy && !SecurityInforcer on NSA to Become Government Net 'Traffic Cop?' · · Score: 3, Interesting

  7. Kevin Mitnick on ChoicePoint Data Stolen By Imposters · · Score: 1
I thought that Kevin Mitnick wrote a book and created a company that is supposed to prevent this type of actions. One the following things seems to be wrong:
    • His words are a bunch of bollocks.
    • His company is a failure.
    • Companies don't know about him.
    • Companies don't want to enter in a contract with a convict.
    • Companies don't give a damn.
I hope to read his book when I have free time. If you /. readers know something, fell free to replay to my comment. But if his words are good, then the idiots that let this happen should be fired for dereliction of duty.

  18. You're fired! on Identity Theft of Many SAIC Employees · · Score: 1, Interesting

Someone is going to lose his or her job. We all know that operating systems and applications have bugs. However, most of the break ins are because of unpatched or misconfigured systems, which are administrator faults. 99.99999999999999% of bad guys are too lazy to find holes themselves like Kevin Mitnick did when he broke into Sun to get Solaris and find security bugs. So, they use what is known. Admins must use what it is known to fix those problems.

  19. Music Hell on The Death of the Music CD · · Score: 1, Insightful

Do you know when it will be music hell? It will be hell when you can only listen to music on a device like the iPod, where you pay a monthly fee, and you stream that music via a satellite. The service will only be by subscription only. There will be no CDs, no formats that you want, and no choice. The only way to get around this is to circumvent the hardware on that device and record the streamed music in whatever format you want. What if they make chips and memory cells that are sensitive to air? You'll have to open that device in a vacuum to record the music. How many of us have a airless room in hour house?

  20. Re:Stupid business on College Students Turn Away From Landlines · · Score: 1, Insightful

Stupid business indeed. However, the reason why they do get away with it is that consumers don't bitch at the Better Business Bureau or to their representatives. Charter Communications is known for this. Sometimes they do take it away from your bill if you are loud enough. Most times they don't, and the tech support will tell you that they do it because they can. They don't even hide. As for phones, mobile phones are more convenient. How much time do students stay in dorms besides sleeping and fucking?

  21. N-Gage on Nintendo With Possible Palm OS Capabilities · · Score: 1, Interesting

They'll probably add cell phone components too. So Nintendo wants to turn the Game Boy line into N-Gage. The problem is that N-Gage is not successful, so what makes them think that Game Boy with PDA and maybe phoning will be successful? I don't think that a 12 years old kid needs a PDA in his Game Boy, nor do I think that he should have a mobile phone. What are your opinions on this?

  25. Xbox Media Centre on Intel to Market PCs as Home Entertainment Hubs · · Score: 3, Informative

XBMC (Xbox Media Centre) already does this. Tom's Hardware reviewed it a while ago. The CVS version has a lot more functionality now. I use it. Whatever Intel will come up with, I guarantee you that it will be in the hundreds of dollars. XBMC is here now, and the XBOX is cheap. Also, if it does not have the functionality that you want, you can contribute. If the XBOX does not have the hardware that you want, you can add it.
