  17. Scorched galaxy... on Finding New and Unintended Ways of Playing Games · · Score: 1

I was playing a game of Master of Orion 2 with a custom race (+50 attack, +20 defense, +10 ground attack, warlord, -50 pop growth, don't remember the rest). Game was going swimmingly, my empire taking over one side of the galaxy, and the Psilons getting the other half. War broke out, and I found myself in a pickle.

My ships were more powerful, and in a standup fight my fleets would annihilate the Psilons even against 10 to 1 odds. Problem was, I was foolish enough not to research Jump Gates, so I was not able to defend my colonies against his 7 deep doomstar fleets. He would never jump into a system that I had enough ships to defend, and as such my empire began to crumble. I finally was down to my last system (a really nice one), and they were finally forced to attack a well-armed fleet.

It was my ~35 ships, a mix of mostly Titans and Battleships, with a half dozen Doom Stars and even a couple Cruisers, against a 7 line deep armada of at least half Psilon doomstars. One of my cruisers went first, as it had been around a long time, refitted a dozen times. It was armed with 6 autofire disruptors and Achilles targeting. My heart soared as that one little ship fired 6 times, destroying a Psilon doomstar with each shot. Being a Warlord with +50 attack, all my ships went first, and that massive fleet became nothing more than wreckage.

Twice more the Psilons smashed their huge fleets into my meatgrinder before the tide began to slacken. Several more turns went by, and I was able to field an expeditionary force to recapture my worlds. Unfortunately I could not hold the systems, as I was never able to get the Jump Gate tech. Then I started simply destroying the Psilon colonies, but they kept popping back up as soon as I would leave.

I soon tired of this, so I added one more ship to my attack fleet: a stellar converter equipped doomstar. After a long and bloody campaign, the galaxy was rubbled, with only three systems with any inhabitable planets: my new home system, Orion, and the last Psilon colony, which had survived the destruction by being caught in a time warp. I bombed that planet to the last Psilon, and blockaded the system. I won the game by popping through a Dimensional Portal and kicking the Antarans. Good fun.

It's a power popular with PVPers called 'Teleport Foe'. There are very few defenses against it. If he was repeatedly using TP Foe to drop villains in front of the police bots guarding the hero base then he was guilty of being a griefer and an asshole. The police bots are there to keep the villains out of the hero base, not as a firing squad. I agree that the design is stupid, as anyone knows that if there is some way to turn a design feature into a way to 'cheat' then they invariably will.

I am guessing that an earlier poster was correct in it being on the Virtue server, as you would likely find people on there doing RP, it being one of the few areas you can have both hero and villains together (most areas are faction-only) at that time. I'm guessing that he was doing his asshattery before the introduction of the Rikti War Zone co-op zone and the PVP retooling.

Nowhere in the article did I see that he was so 1337 that groups of other PVPers couldn't defeat him, especially a group of them. If they did defeat him, he didn't lose anything and could go right back out and keep doing it.

It's morons like him that keep me in the PVE zones. I'm know that I can be killed by another player in a PVP zone, its no big deal, its part of the game. But PVP makes it too easy for some asshole to screw with you with no repercussions on their part, and that's what this guy was doing.

You're overblowing the situation... Posi mentioned *possible* sanctions against players who used *exploits*. The devs could generally care less about people that simply farm. They've always been diligent about nerfing the missions that makes things *too* easy, usually by making the mission timed so it can't be kept and restarted over and over and over again.

As far as treating the players as adults, well, if they would act in a manner appropriate for adults I would agree with you. Many of the players do, but I see a large fraction that act like a bunch of entitled assholes. They'll seek out the exploits that give them a bigger e-peen, and then wail and gnash their teeth when the devs take it away from them.

Yes, you are one of those 'hard to please' purist type Trekkies.

If anything, the swordfighting scene WAS canon that was kept: Sulu was an excellent fencer in TOS. And I assume that the character you were speaking of was the one Kirk found with Scotty? I'm sorry, not even close.

And the plot resembling "Year In Hell"? OK, if every plot involving time travelers changing the timestream to create a new alternate is somehow "almost" exactly the same, then YIH copied ST4TVH, STTNG, and even TOS. The story isn't the act of making a new timestream, it about what happens from that point forward, which was the whole fucking point behind the reboot.

The characters were fine... you couldn't focus on ALL of them in a two hour movie, plus the main characters in TOS always were Kirk and Spock. Don't worry, this film will spawn at least one if not more sequels.

Destroy canon? Completely rewriting the story? Did we watch the same movie? The whole fucking point was to start with NEW canon, without completely invalidating the existing canon. Absolutely nothing they did in this film in any way invalidates what came before, and in fact honors it in the best way possible. So go ahead and watch your reruns of TNG and DS9 (all good stuff BTW) and leave the enjoying of something fresh and new to me and most everyone else.
