The problem with your statement is that WANT and even NEED are both subjective terms (until you get to the basics such as air, food, water, etc). I WANT to have a successful US space program, but I also submit that it is something the US NEEDS.

You want to talk about money sinks? How about Iraq, the Wall Street bailout, etc? If you want to cut spending then you need to go after the biggest spenders first. I'm sure NASA could be made more efficient, but trimming a $17 billion budget will not put an appreciable dent in the national debt, and would make us one step closer to becoming a third world country without a space program.

Algae growth can literally FILL a lake in just a few years, in fact this is part of the natural cycle for small lakes, which as they silt up and the water warms up, will fill first to algae beds, then to marsh, and finally to meadow; once started, the entire process can take as little as ten years

Rich snots find pleasant lake and build waterfront mansions around it. Being rich, they insist upon maintaining a couple of acres of putting green quality lawn around them. [This I know, since I live on such a lake, but my 'yard' is basically wild. Whatever grows there unfertilized naturally. The rich snots hate me for not having a nice green lawn.] Eventually, their fertilizer will plug up the lake, turning it into a marsh. Their property values will plummet and they'll all move out.

And then they'll be the hell off of your lawn.

Coleman did NOT win because his opponents were horrible. Two things happened to allow him to win the election:

    1) Wellstone (who would have likely won re-election) was killed in a plane crash 1 week before the election.

    2) A few days later, at Wellstone's wake, some asshat giving a speech turned it into a political rally. This little stunt really offended a lot of Democrat voters that would have voted for Mondale otherwise. It also galvanized many GOP voters to get out and vote for Coleman.

As I recall, there was a record turnout of voters, which was impressive when you consider the fact that it was not a Presidental election. Coleman won with 49.53% of the vote to Mondale's 47.34%. Hell, there was 11,381 people who voted for Wellstone!
