When I first heard about DRM music, way back in the 90's, I just looked at my male to male audio cable and thought "Press play on one end and record on the other. If you can view it, you can capture it" Still true today. The whole idea is an exercise in futility.

I believe the stone was referring to the line in the gospel of Thomas "Split a log and i am there, lift a stone and you shall find me."
Jesus was AGAINST hierarchal leadership in religion. In the modern bible he is called "Jesus of Nazareth" but it says he is from Jerusalem and/or Bethlehem. Why? Because Nazareth didn't even EXIST till 400-500 AD. Nazareth is a bad translation. He was "Jesus the Nazarete". The Nazaretes being a religious/political movement against the power structure of the Jewish church at the time.

I think what is meant here is that there should be more games with real life scenarios.
This may translate as boring to someone who loves first person shooters but not to others. I liken it to the difference between aliens and garden state. Garden state wasn't an "exciting" movie, but it WAS interesting.
There should be more games that actually focus on plot and writing, not just poly counts and endless waves of enemies.

  7. Wait for it..... on Municipal Wi-Fi Networks In Trouble · · Score: 1

Why does any city need wifi coverage?
The one question is: what device needs wide area, constant, mobile internet? Your phone?
Laptops are NOT mobile enough to warrant this sort of thing...oh so you want to use your laptop? Well your in a cafe right? Where else is do you think your gonna get a seat and a table? If your in a park with it then maybe your city council needs to put wifi there, not everywhere. If every cafe provided internet for its customers and other government operated places (libraries, parks, bus stops maybe?) provided low range wifi (or just ethernet cables on extendable reels :P) then noone would be without a connection. It is pointless to cover an entire city with a service that most buildings provide for you.
Even more stupid perhaps is to provide a service only usable by a specific and immature product. The laptop is not a real portable computer, it is too big, too prone to heat problems, too delicate and most of all too desk like to be truly portable.
Give it a few years. When laptops are the size of iPods it will be a problem, for now just worry where to get your latte while you surf.

There are many situations where NOT having instant communication accessible would be idiotic. Not to mention, when you break down on the side of the road or have a heart attack/accident you are relying on other people to provide you with a cell phone.

  15. Near sighted slashdotters on Recording Your Entire Life · · Score: 1

Having read all the comments so far i do not think ANYONE got the point of this tech.
Firstly this is preliminary work. There was no mention of possible products in the near future, no mention of this being a finished tech or of it being anything other than an experiment.
Secondly this would be amazing combined with other technologies we are going to achieve in the near future. (IMHO. Assuming we don't all drown/fry/bake first) Direct connections to the brain, neural control over devices, sensory overlays, direct sensory inputs (i.e. recording what you hear rather than what a microphone attached to you hears) and implanted digital storage to name just a few.
Thirdly actual self choice of what to keep is not explored. Maybe if you had a 1 week buffer for video/audio after which anything you hadn't tagged as important gets deleted. This is effectively how your brain functions. It is also how most people manage their mail/emails/data anyway. What is making everyone here think that people wont bother doing the same with this tech? When your sitting at home at night or on the bus thinking about stuff thats been happening recently would you not be accessing your recordings of these events? Why would you not at least have a system that ranks "most viewed" or "not ever viewed" memories, if not just tagging stuff you want to keep yourself?
Also, if the device that does all this recording is to be active all the time it would have to be an implant of some kind to gain widespread use. We have had pens and paper for a LONG time but it is not used to note down important information because people can't be bothered carrying it around everywhere they go.
As to the legal issue, this is effectively a non issue as you would not keep information regarding crimes you have committed unless you are stupid. Stupid criminals deserve to go to jail. Simple. It is like murderers who keep vast collections of evidence in their house or corporate thieves who keep the receipts. Destroy the evidence...duh.
In summary this is amazing research and will be the future of the human races memory. Please think things through before you slam them

It blows my mind whenever a global warming debate starts on slashdot.

That statement does serve to reassure the public. When you find lots of melted ice, look for the fire. Also i wouldn't be so quick to say it has nothing to do with global warming. It may not be caused by it but large freshwater lakes held under ice have been the cause of major climate shifts in the past. Large freshwater lakes held in by glaciers have the potential to be released by melting ice. This can cause problems with the oceans heat transfer system due to desalinization.

In conclusion: when the news starts adding "these figures are not thought to have been caused by global warming" to the end of each weather forecast you can say we are jumping at shadows, till then i think the public should be kept more informed about what does and does not affect the world we live in.
