  1. Knowledge and support on Linux vs. Windows for Schools? · · Score: 1

How much are you willing to support?

Linux is a nice free OS, but has never griped to be very user friendly, especially not for people used to Windows. For these people, some have tried to help with X windows system that has near look&feel as a windows machine.

So question is, how much Linux knowledge do you or your support staff have? Do you know how to troubleshoot in case something is wrong with the installation.

How much do you wanna spend on educate the teachers in use of Linux, and what about the children. Most of them are properly used to Windows installations at home, and need to know how Linux works.
Evenmore if you fail educating the teachers, and they feel it is a big problem having to learn another OS, the whole project would fail.

So you need to check the background of users before deciding. The cost of an upgrade will in the beginning be placed at education rather than being a save.

Btw. are there not a bunch of OSX theme copies out there already?

This was actually shown on G4 (US tech based TV station) in the old ScreenSavers show, where some guy showed a program built to monitor and display requests from P2P network.

So I guess over a period of time you just collect enough information, pick out the top 10 IPs, get user information from the ISP and make a visit with local authorities, and if they find matching files on the hardware collected have your VISA ready.

  10. Yeah right, in your dreams on Paramount Sues Ohio Man For $100,000 · · Score: 1

As lot of threads says, you cant really judge much to the /. brief, maybe he was a victim or maybe he was clever, but what were his habits. As other says, 4 computers, DSL/Cable access and wifi, somehow this user seems a bit over the average Mr. & Mrs. Smith.

    Meanwhile at Paramount Pictures:

Smithers: "Mr Smedley, I'm sad to report that we cant find any trace of Coach Carter, but we did find 1000 mp3 songs of various artist and Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith and some unreadable scrambled data in the empty sectors of the drive"
Smedley: "Darn-ji-ga-di-duh we have to give back the computers to him, we have no logs from eDonkey regarding scrambled data"

(Smithers and Smedley are totally fictive characters)

And the conclusion, people are still using eDonkey, eventhough it is known to be another of the most monitored networks, and some users are not using tools blocking suspectable IPs.

With fibre, in same scenario as above, not much will change, so the same cable can be used for higher speeds.

We have several old NetVistas (6266-A7G) at work. They needed to be reinstalled for some terminal use, and the supporters could not figure out why so many would not boot, and some smelled really burned when they added power.

On all of them, 2-3 capacitors near the CD-drive had leaked or was bulging. And amazingly (especially when facing IBM with the problem) it was the exactly same capacitors on the machines.
Of course IBM declined any problem, and said the machines were out of warranty and that specific model was EOL.

Depends on the intention of the badguy and how business usually is done in the companies involved along the way.

For example divert snailmail to a P.O. box, contact bank on and say you need a new credit card, the new card along with pin code would be snailmailed to you, and upon receipt you will need to activate the new card which would close the old one (which was still valid during the wait for new card). Cash in on victims account.

Now this would only be good, unless victim notices the missing mail for the time being. And if Post office nor bank consultant would require, some more personal information for issuing divert of mail and request for new card.
