Seems to me, as I recall, 1995 is when the Internet went public. Looking at the chart, there were a lot of changes in programming languages in 1995. Interesting...
I wasn't suggesting using Nuclear power in cars like in Back to the Future, what I meant is build a tons of Nuclear Reactors all over the place that produce electricity, and then power the cars with electricity. With the rise in hybrid cars, the technology is there and being refined more and more each year and becoming more efficient. Sure there will be drawbacks, but it could slow down the impact of running out of oil. I am way more in favor of alternate fuel sources such as hydrogen, just throwing out another idea that would work. The point is not whether it is the perfect solution or not, it is that it would work. I know there is waste generated by Nuclear power, but how does it compare to all the waste generated by all the fossil fuels we're burning? And when it comes down to it, would we be willing to deal with some nuclear waste rather than living like Swiss Family Robinson? Personally, I wouldn't mind living in a cabin in the woods with a stockpile of rifle ammo eating freshly killed deer and elk while everyone else in the cities try and figure out how they are going to do without their modern convieniences...
Let's hope we have enough oil to last 50 to 100 years...
If it comes down to it, we can always use Nuclear power electrify everything that uses natural resources, such as cars and heat. Some things might not work too well such as aircraft but I'm sure before oil runs completely out it can be regulated and preserved for military use and other important things.
I'm sure governments would make exceptions to the envirnmental risks of nuclear power when faced with the reality of an economic halt due to lack of oil.
He asks pointedly "[W]hy do some modern Americans (of course, a small percentage) want only those immigrant programmers and IT workers who came during recent times to go back home, yet tend to forget that their parents or grandparents were immigrants too?"
I grew up in Washington State, and am the 5th generation live here in my family. Before that, there were more generations who lived on the East Coast. When people ask me what nationality I am, I don't say "Swedish" or "Dutch" or "French", all which are in my bloodline, I tell them I am American. At some point you'be been where you are long enough to say that's where you came from.
No, I haven't forgotten where my parents and grandparents... and great grandparents, are from. They are from right here in the good old USA. And while there are many whose families have not been here as long as mine, that make up this great nation, it is not because of the morals that people bring with them from other countires that make America great, it is the things they gave up, and agreements they made with eachother here in America, to get along despite their different opinions, that makes this a great nation. I don't have a problem with people coming here from other countries, or people working temporarily in our country, in fact I am honored to be able to allow people from other counties to come here and work and take something home to their family. I know not everyone in America thinks this way, but that's OK with me, I don't like the way everyone thinks:) If you are from another country, please remember, American have made huge sacrices to their own lives to let our country offer them what they can get.
Have you ever driven in Argentina? Imagine a massive horde of thousands of 5 year olds rushing through a 4 meter wide hallway with absolutely no order or mutual respect for eachother at all. Then, picture the same thing on a 4 lane freeway. There are lane lines on the ground, but I swear, Argentine's are lane line blind. If there is room between two adjacent lanes to pass a car, then they pass. If there's room to merge between two cars leaving only a foot or two in front and back of your car, they do. And the craziest part about it, is that the people getting passed and cut off don't get pissed at you! It's the norm down there, they're all like it so it's no big deal. Of course, that didn't make me comfortable, coming from Washington State where people are afraid to merge at 50mph when there's many car lengths of room. And, noticing how many of their cars had heavily dented quarter panels and front/rear bumpers made me happy that people are more cautios in the states. Oh yeah, I went skiing there too, and the lift lines were the same thing. There was no order to you. You smashed and cut and pushed your way in. The nice part was that if you cut in front of someone, they didn't get pissed at you like they do in the states, cause they do it too!
I was anticipating this game since it was first announced, and now that I've seen the trailer and all the IGS vids, I don't want it.
I bought RTCW, and I hated walking through a morg with monsters coming after me. It wouldn't been way cooler if Carmak and his crew designed something more realistic (but not 100%) like the Bourne identity. It freeks me out walking around in dark corridors not knowing what the heck is beside me.
Good job ID, you made it so scary I don't want it!
There was nothing scary about the firt Doom, the graphics were so bad that it didn't matter. Boy how that's changed.
I think you mis-interpretted him. He said Earthlink's software includes spyware. I think that he is reffering to the Earthlink software that a user would install to connect to the Internet, not the Earthlink software that is supposed to remove spyware.
His comments do not surprise me one bit. Everything seems to come with spyware now, even divx.
Yeah, who gives a shit about gameplay or things like that when you can just sit there and drool over how many polygons the game is filling! Ohhh I need to go get a rag! Ohhh!
That's what I'm talking about!!! The drool factor is cool!
Is that it doesn't require MAC hardware like a MAC does. You already have all those IBM PC's out there that Linux can run on. But the problem with MAC was that you had to buy a whole new computer, not just an OS.
Yes!!! In fact, it can be political as well! By inventing things way ahead of time, it boosts invester's confidence, and show other companies that they can compete in R&D. Governments do this, think about NASA.
IBM is a US company, who has invested billions into technology that is not in use. They were the 1rst company to arrange individual atoms (spelling IBM). They made a processor that uses atoms as transistors. They don't use any of it in production, but probably will some day. I think that you underestimate many US companies with your statement.
How many companies these days are willing to drop money into some technology that may not turn a profit for many years?
IBM for example, holds the record for the last few years in patents. They made a processor where atoms funtion as transistors, the smallest form ever. Will they use this in the next 10 years? maybe, but probably not. But when it is used, they will make a lot of money on it and be consulted 1rst most likely.
Only drives old cars because he can fix them. I don't blame him, but I don't want to fix a car so I bought a new one and will probably sell it after I've driven it for 7 or 8 years. It might break down a few times, but I treat it nice and it's a Toyota with great reports on this model, so I don't think I'll have any problems.
Yeah I like to exaggerate about the grasshoppers cause it pisses me off that there's all these legalistic restrictions on what you can/can't do in life. I understand some things like don't litter or dump appliances, or don't pollute the air/water with petroleum, but I do think that there are a lot of bogus things like global warming and the o-zone layer that I don't buy into, but still have to abide by the government's rules. I abide by them, but it pisses me off. I mean, we just had a record cold winter here in Washington after years of "Oh no, the polar ice caps are going to melt and it's going to be Waterworld!!!".
As far as the economy, I would ask you, where does "nature" come from? Because where it comes from, is the source. The source can give or take away, and we are like grass it comparison. Most people disagree, but I don't care!
The debt is not as bad as it is made to look like. If you look at the dollar abount, it looks bad, but you have to realize, that $1 from 2004 != $1 from 1929. Also, there are government services/agencies that end up closing/reducing services due to tax cuts, it's not just a loan. Most of the loan comes from the war on terror, the government creating new agencies, and "accounting problems". My personal feelings are that the taxes should be lowered, and instead of taxing us elswhere, the government should eat it, not in debt either, but by cutting un-needed services like tree-hugging services and protect the wildlife crap. I grew up in Rural Washington and I am sick of it costing 14 billion dollars to do an envirnmental study on the ecological habital of the grasshopper, or not being allowed to build a dock in your front yard because it keeps the fish from spauning. This is not money well spent.

Google requires that each employee work on such a project every Friday. That is how they make up the 20%.
Also, for the billing software, I've seen some open source solutions for WebHosting services. I bet it wouldn't be hard to use it for a telco system.
- Customer service (unless you're not going to provide any)
Just outsource it to India

I think this is another political move by the Liberal media to try and make President Bush look bad.
It's sad, really, but everyone will be judged in the end, so let them say what they want.
That was my first thought when I clicked on this article... Glad someone else agrees.

Might be time to think about moving North, eh?"
I will NEVER move North! I'd rather not be a programmer than move north. I think that Les Schwab might be hiring tire changers...

The demo was tight
Except that your $149 Xbox cannot fill a tenth (probably less) as many polygons as the $2549 PC.
Ninja Gaiden is the only game on Xbox that I would buy the system for. Until then I am happy with my PC and GameCube titles.
How many MB/GB can this thing hold? How does it compare to IBM's (or is it Hitachi's) microdrive?
