  1. Re:Fair use rights on Supreme Court Rejects RIAA Appeal · · Score: 1

Copywrite in the U.S. is based around the fact that there haven't been any significant advancements in technology for about 40 years.

What we've been seeing is a lot of tweaking, turning telephones and calculators into computers. But it hasn't been really new idea's.

If the copywrite laws break down or are allowed to expire the west will lose the moral right they gain from saying that they are the ones responsible for new technology, this is used as a justification for our quality of life which is mainly bolstered by stringent immigration laws.

I'm just stating what seems to be the reasoning behind the government's position. It works logically, unfortunatly right now they are dealing with an increasingly inward looking society. And societies that contemplate their navels, don't inovate, aren't dynamic, and don't survive.

They would force Microsoft to create products around an open set of standards.

This is kind of interesting because it only applies to computer programming (actually I suppose it applies to any interchangeable parts in a machine but people rarely swap those in and out) but the main barrier to someone trying to assault the microsoft monopoly is that they use propreietary standards for their products.

No other word program can enter the market without being able to read and write .doc files for example.

There is no real reason for this, it is simply a way to bolster their monopoly, it is not as if these standards are particularly novel.

I wonder how you would write this as a law though, "outgoing documents and media material must be in a open standard"?

I think it would be unfair to deny them the ability to have documents make procedure calls (usually just a seemingly random interger in the file that tells the program to do soemthing specific) on their applications though so they can't move to a totally open standard.

Since there is skype for pocket pc it makes any pocket PC into a mobile phone.

What's more it is only useful when you are making outgoing calls or expecting an incomming one so there is not that annoying incoming cell phone buzz.

People will switch entirely to IP telephony and it will be free eventually, the hardware to implement it will become powerful enough.

What's bogging it down? No standards. Same as Webcams there simply is no way to get everyone onto one system except to get them to abandon their old system, something the telephone network never had to deal with.

Basically they are saying that many of the products that pass through their labs have glaring faults that they simply cannot assess with 12 hours of benchmarking.

They also need to look around at some of the customer complaints and assess the level of problems for themselves, I have to RFA crap all the time and it pisses me off. There is nowhere where you can get statistics on this kind of thing but Tom's takes the time to check out "common complaints" and see if there is a problem with the manufacturing.
