The Corporation tries to answer this question. Pretty cool documentary. It's slightly left-leaning but it does show the opinions of both righties and lefties as well as ex and current CEO's from various huge multinational corporations. Very interesting.
If you don't want to purchase or rent it, you can find a torrent on Sweden's favourite torrent site.:)
Personally, I just assume that whatever I write or say is being listened to. It sucks, but that's the world we live in. Don't like it? Vote for a non-fascist next time.
Ever see the vote or die episode in south park? I think it summed it up nicely. You have a choice to vote between a giant douche or a turd sandwich. Both are shitty choices, but they're the only choices. Since the system is not perfect you have to find ways to protect your freedom. After all, it's the patriotic thing to do and anyone who says otherwise is a communist. (Like that fear mongering tactic I just used? Thanks, I learned it from our leaders.)
As for discouraging encryption, I think we should encourage everyone to use it so it becomes standard practice. This way being targetted because you use encryption will not be a good reason anymoer. This should also go for Instant Messaging and Voice over IP.
I have some cousins in Norway and they tell me all the guys find the Swedish girls hot, and all the guys from Sweden find the Norwegien girls hot so it all works out.
- Burn them on DVDs (60GB = 15 DVDs).
- Give one set to my brother for Christmas.
- Give another set to my friend for Christmas.
- Keep a private server going and encourage my friends to get the latest stuff.
I've had a hard drive crap out on me and I've lost a ton of mp3s before but I had copies at some place or another. Sharing your data with your family and friends is one sure way to have a distributed backup system. Now, you don't control their data but chances are if they have big harddrives they'll keep that stuff around.
This is how I backup my documents: - compress it every month or so and make a copy on each hard drive on my computer. Occasionally I backup to CD. Actually I think this data has less backups than my mp3s, even though it's some of it's important, but I could always embed a password protected file into one of my mp3 disks that no one would notice.:)
"Majoras said the DirecTV case accounted for 1.4 million complaints, the single biggest category of do-not-call violations the commission has ever received."
Good lord that's a huge number.
United States -- Population: 295,734,134
So roughly 1/200 people (not taking into account that each household is probably 2-6 people) in all of the US took the time out of their lives to look up the FCC's phone number and complain. Yeah. I'd say they deserve to get fined.
Wouldn't us hardcore leechers benefit by giving back our bandwidth? This isn't IRC or P2P. This is bittorrent! If you have a website known for it's "super fast torrents" among other regular torrents, then you'd be getting more people to join because of these crazy speeds. So in theory, by uploading yourself, you're telling other people "Hey I'm getting awesome speeds! I'm going to stick around here for a while longer".
I know it's off topic but I'd be interested in reading about your survival story (i.e. being standed in the bush), and what sort of things you had to do (i.e. shelter, food, water).
"Art is that which is created by an artist with the intention of communicating with their audience.
Most games are not attempting to communicate, but are rather trying to entertain their audience."
Take a movie like Independence Day. What does it doing? It's entertaining you. What's there to communicate? Oh, we're going to save the day from the evil aliens! Yay!"
Now take a game like Deus Ex. "Life imitates art. Art imitates life." Not sure how that goes but Deus Ex definitely imitates life. Nanotechnology, the illuminati, FEMA, terrorism, world-wide virus problem, poverty, cybernetic implants. It takes all these things and creates a powerful story in a dystopian future that makes people THINK. How many of have not gone and looked up some of these groups after playing this game and found out all this cool information?
So why is it art? It makes you think about life, it evokes emotions, it shows you the possibilities of nanotechnology and how that could be used in the future. It also gives you choices, let's you play the game how you want to play. Movies don't allow that. Deus Ex allows you to interpret not just the images and sounds you see, but it allows you to choose WHAT images and sounds, therefore providing a greater amount of possible interpretations.
And things at huge companies tend to take a long time to finish. I wonder where the point of diminishing returns sets in. Typically mid-sized companies tend to have the resources to perform their services as well as keep customer satisfaction at an optimum level.
Maybe it's time for MS to break off into 3 sections? Just like where I work (huge municipal organization)...our project WILL save our city millions of dollars but what's happening right now? It's at a stand still because it's budget time. *sigh*
At least I was able to. At my work for some strange reason I'm able to "run" an exe from IE, but if I save it and then try to run it then it won't work. So what I did was when I went to the firefox website and I just ran it from that location and I was able to get it up and running. Then I just copied the proxy settings from IE to Firefox and everything worked!:)
My IT guy just said that I can do what I can with my computer and the rights that are given to me, but if there's a problem and it's not one of their company specific applications (i.e. Word, excel, SAP, etc) then they will just format my computer, so in a way that's how I'm liable (if I install something that breaks my computer).
Anyway give it a try!

I use newsgroups on the regular and this is very shitty for me. Access through GigaNews is an additional $15 a month and this would be a big different if added to the $40CDN high speed internet.
Yes I'm talking about binaries. Yes I download binaries. What's the point of high speed internet if all you're going to check is your fucking email, do some online banking, and post on slashdot? I've done it using "links" on the Gentoo installation CD.
I download a lot of music off of alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.* (particularly electronic) and often times find new music I would have otherwise never heard before. I've even purchased some CDs because of this! Not to mention the club here or there or concert that has those artists come.
Anyway, I'm going to write a letter requesting a reduction in my internet account. Here's the address to those that wish to do the same: (their Toronto head office)

I've purchased a few things from my local Comic Book Store, but unfortunately our unfriendly neighborhood huge book chain (########.######.ca) have them cheaper, and in fact, their online store is cheaper than their retail store (and by a considerable amount!). For example...
On the Wizards.com website, the Dungeon Masters Guide II: Price $39.95 ; C$55.95
Our local gaming shop? Just a bit over $56. Our local huge book store? $55.95 Our local huge book online store? $37.48 i####### Member Price: $35.61 (i####### is $20 for a year)
So you can save $20 ($17 USD for those who still think Canadian currency is equivalent to monopoly money) on ONE BOOK! Free shipping for orders over $39.
Here's an even better one: Special Edition Dungeon Master Guide List Price: $105.00 Our Price: $70.35 i####### Member Price: $66.83
So just by purchasing online you can buy another book essentially for free and still pay a few dollars less, and have it all shipped to your house.
Comic Book stores need to figure out a way to either get more involved with their gaming community in order to have customer loyalty, or just go online, because saving $20 CDN($17 USD) on each book is just too much to give up for keeping the little guy in business.
To reward great roleplaying (although there would be some balance because the really great role players would end up being the drunkest worst role player (or maybe even better?)).
(Me)DM: Ryan, you've managed to convince the dark ranger to give you the whereabouts of the hidden cave of Argploop, where the magical vorpal longsword +5 resides. Ryan: "Cool! What about roleplaying experience?" DM: "Fuck that! I got something better..." *pulls out bottle of rum* Ryan: "Woohoo!"...*a few hours go by*... Ryan: "Alright, I got an idea how we can get more experience points! Let's go door to door, knock and then stab whoever answers and just keep doing this"
(Editor/DM's note: I actually have a guy named Ryan in my gaming group and him and this other guy actually did this, and me being the inexperienced DM let it go on for about 4 houses until finally they met a huge ogre that lived among the fellow townsfolk. Good times)

Very well I might add.
How about they separate it from the OS? I'm sure that would fix a few thousand previous and future security holes.

OT: This confirm script is really scarying me. It's always so ironically appropriate for the conversation. For example right now it's "unarmed".
