  1. Poor Microsoft on Xbox Losses Double, Xbox Shrinks · · Score: 2, Insightful

It's always sad to see a monopoly fail when it muscles it's way into a new market :)
I must say though SEGA has made some amazing games for the XBOX-- not enough to warrant a purchase from me.. I have a gamecube and a ps2(one that has a defective discdrive...disc read error blah)... The Gamecube has been insanely fun- more fun than most of my PS2 games... Metroid was tons of fun, and even though the games are pretty stylized and bright they are still great fun.
I don't think Microsoft will be able to stay afloat in the games industry personally- They are just getting started from their perspective- while companies like Sony and Nintendo are already working on releasing new consoles by 2005...
How long will it take for Microsoft to try and move into the handheld market?... Nintendo practically subsidizes their console business with handhelds until they can produce them cheap enough to stand on their own.
3 consoles-- and the market is already saturated...personally I hope microsoft fails- they produced an inferior product in many respects-- I'm am glad that the gaming public has enough taste to avoid the heap of plastic the XBOX is.

  2. Putting all your eggs in one basket on Power Companies Offering Cable (TV, Net) Service · · Score: 5, Interesting

I Love new technology, and I think its great that power companies are making the most efficient use of their technologies.
My issue is putting all your eggs in one basket... A few years back when there was a giant ice storm in Quebec, we were reminded of how dependant people have become on electricity. Now lets just say that using the power grid to access information becomes popular- power grids are already very central to survival in the modern age.
if something happens to the grid you're not going to have power, so it wont matter if you can access the net; slowly the infastructure can be repaired and the chances of taking out all power lines at once is very slim. On the other hand if you were to take out a couple power stations you could disrupt the flow of information, as well as disrupt the lives of people for a considerable amount of time. It would be much harder to replace a power plant than wires and transformers.

  3. IBM's M.O. on Nickel Sensors Could Raise Hard Disk Capacity · · Score: 1

I've also heard of IBM working on Holographic storage, Crystal Storage, and Molecular Storage.... It just seems IBM's R&D groups are more interested in winning patents than actually pumping out viable products-- they aren't exactly known for their innovations in the modern computer age, and are probably more interested in trying to attract US Gov't investments.
Now how long will it be before Steve Jobs comes along, flirts with the CEO of IBM and steals everything only to have Bill Gates come along and steal it off him...

  6. They are not pro capitalist on NARAS vs. the RIAA · · Score: 2, Insightful

I wouldn't say it is pro capitalist. The RIAA has a sanctioned monopoly in their business. The business model has more in common with prostitution, the "artists" are promised the world but forced into debt by their publishers, and are forced into more agreements and debts. It would be similar to an office worker becoming instantly in debt to his employer because he needs supplies (like a computer) to do the job you just hired him for, but why not charge him for the marketing of the product you're going to sell, and also make him responsible for the shipping of your product- after all they all cut into the bottom line... In a true capitalistic economy competition would allow artists to find better publishers (which does happen) and if the RIAA had competition we would see new business models that would force the RIAA to compete and change the way it treats consumers. Monopolies go against the idea of capitalism, where it is in the best interest of a company, or trade association to look out for the "well-being" of the consumer-- and obviously keep him/her happy enough to buy your product.

Ho the guy deserves the money- but the company is already at the bottom of the market, and K.Y. is essential for ATI's succsess.
Ho has very tight relationships with manufacturers, one of ATI's advantages. This scam is going to kill ATI, even if they get off their stock price is extremely low. here is the link to the story

I am using an m125, and I would use a mini-keyboard like the one that was released for the m705, the little black one that attaches to the bottom.
Does anyone have any suggestions for keyboard replacements for an m125?

SO yeah I paid 129$ for a translucent terminal window!
It kinda makes sense- I am ONLY entitled to the iApp that came with Jaguar. Maybe if Apple is in a good mood I'll get a few bug fixes....perhaps...
This kinda makes me think that Apple is going to start forcing users to use ONLY the Operating system they bought with their macs...so if you want os 10.3....you better buy a new computer.
This might be mac blasphemy, but maybe Jobs really is a washed up hippy with little education? Is this possible? NeXt wasn't rolling in the dough... and Pixar only was sucsessful because they were located far enough away from Jobs geographically preventing him from turning it into a hardware company.
So yeah, I know all this and I still own a mac, I like Apple, but I'm not going to be a zealot. I switched because of the iApps, I thought I paid for them with my loyalty to the mac brand, and I was willing to pay for em again the next time I bought an OS upgrade, or bought a new mac....(which I was planning to do).
I think it's about time Apple moves away from hardware..... maybe sticks with designing the cases, and let AMD or Intel, or the Chinese goverment make the innards... Your computers are slow, and gouging me is not going to make you sleep better at night!
If this rumor pans out to be true, Apple will have actually made the windows operating system attractive, it has great games, lots of support, and fast processor speeds! that will not kill your bank account... I never thought i'd say that.
