Why is IPv6's 128 bit address space the only feature that ever gets talked about on Slashdot? I've always thought that v6 had two killer features neither of which are the 3.4028*10^38 addresses. I'm talking about native support for encryption (IPSEC) and multicast. In my opinion these two features especially multicast have the potential to radically change the way we use the Internet.
Only talking about IPv6's address space is like saying that the only improvement in AMD's Opteron is the 64 bit core. What about the on die memory controller and the NUMA style architecture?
There are fairly few recent PCs in many hospitals.
I know a database engineer that works for a large national health care provider she says this isn't as true as it used to be. Y2k was a wakeup call for an industry that was still maintaining an amazing amount of COBAL and even MUMPS code on old school big iron. This particular health care provider did an organization workstation upgrade during '99. All machines were not only required to be Y2k compliant but those that were running Microsoft OSes were required to be upgraded to W2k or XP. As far as the server side of things are concerned all new apps run on Oracle.
The other thing that is driving the industry to revamp is HIPAA. All apps have to be at very least audited for compliance. Often times it's easier and more future-proof to reengineer and reimplement these legacy systems. It's getting harder and harder to find coders that are not only qualified to audit these archaic systems but that want to spend their time doing it. Even if the pay is good would you really want to spend your days digging through two decade old COBAL?
If you're interested in a self built solution I recommend you take a look at an article I saw in Circuit Cellar's January '04 issue, Remote Observation Station(PDF. by by Richard Dreher.
I forgot to say one thing. I reply to the PTC's recent effort to influence what can legally be transmitted through the ether I would just like to say the following:
If you don't like what's on the radio, TV, web or other medium, TURN IT OFF!
Does this seem like a spam approach to activism?
The fact that Powell didn't mention that over 99% of the complaints came from a single group makes me think that he will use those misleading statistics to further his or his administration's agenda.
If mass complaining is all that is required to get political agendas pushed forward then Slashdot could very well become one of the most important or at least most vocal lobbying group in the country.
I can no longer sit back and allow Communist infiltration, Communist indoctrination, Communist subversion and the international Communist conspiracy to sap and impurify all of our precious bodily fluids.
Here in the states we don't like those long haired draft dodging pinko commie bike riders taking up any of that beautiful black asphalt that each of us God fearing American moterists is garuenteed unfettered access to in the Constitution. Such marks as you describe would just give the godless bikers the idea that they are equal to us and encourage them to ride.
Remeber, the Commie has no regard for human life. Not even his own.
I think what is being asked here is why add another layer? XML can be directly via HTTP so why serve it via SOAP which is in turn being served by HTTP?
I've been thinking about adding RBL filtering to my personal mail server for some time now. What do you think of Spamhaus' SBL-XBL? Do you use any other lists?
Even if it were true that Saint Helens expelled more CO2 then all of human civilization what is to say that we are not to blame? Isn't it possible that the "little bit" of greenhouse gas that we humans produce is enough to push the system beyond it's tipping point?
I suppose it's cool for developers who need to support multiple distributions, but yawn to the rest of us.
Actaully Xen has a future in datacenters. One really usefull feature of Xen is the ability to migrate VMs from machine to machine without major interuption of service. I believe that there is also some work being done on making Xen work on clusters.
Using a DVI repeater/booster will allow you to place your LCD in excess of 25 ft (~7.5 m) away from the box. Beware though, these devices aren't cheap, they typicaly cost US$250 or more.

where are we going to get the vast sums of money needed to make free software competitive with commercial closed source software?
Who said that we need "vast sums of money"? The original article was on the topic of the "lone coder" not massive multinational conglomerates.
Small organizations consisting of a no more then a handful of dedicated coders working on projects that they are deeply interested in are bound to be more efficient then the Suns, IBMs and Microsoft's of the the world.
Such small consultancy firms have little to no advertising, marketing and sales overhead. These groups thrive on word of mouth and a more academia like environment.

What about writing open source software on contract? This is how companies like Namesys (ReiserFS) exist. Reiser4 development was paid for by DARPA, SuSE and Lindows.
Telecommute. It saves fuel as well.

Metroid: Species of jellyfish-like alien predators from SR-388.
Interesting idea. Some should write it up and submit it to the Squid proxy developers.

Interesting... can anyone prove this?
We've seen wardriving, warflying, warboating I think the obvious next step is warballooning.
