    "...Deriding the American educational system for not having kids memorize every event in space history is a bit harsh..."

    I totally agree, a proper education system SHOULD *touch* on all important subject matter for students. Once a student gets a taste of a particular subject that he/she is interested in learning more on, trhe next logical step is to go to the freakin' library and start reading more about it.

    for example, I was always interested in World War 2 history during school, i read countless books on the subject and now know quite a bit about this period of history just from reading accounts from ALL sides and viewpoints.
    IIRC, did you know that Hitler's private train for travelling on was called the 'Amerika'.

    Not directed to the parent post but dont whinge about how you weren't taught this or that during your education - if you really had a keen interest in a subject you'd supplement your knowledge by taking the time to read further into it.

    I really like the concept of playing a game that is a sequel to a previously released movie where an actual movie sequel has not been made yet.

    I can't think of any good ones at the moment, but i'm sure there are movies out there where everyone thinks a sequel should have been made.

    On the other hand, i'm still waiting for a decent sequel to The Matrix!

  15. Outsourcing Jobs on A Thoughtful Look at Indian Outsourcing · · Score: 2, Insightful

    A couple of points to ponder;

    (1) Being a software engineer just out of university - i'm currently working at a major bank which has it's own Indian software development wing. Quite a few large Australian companies do this and have already gotten rid of 'small' amounts of in-house developers.

    (2) This 'outsourcing' phenomenon is very cyclical in nature, and India happens to be the flavour of the month - in a decade it'll probably be some other developing country.

    (3) To best protect yourself from this is too be helpful in other areas of the business. Become more involved in the 'business end' of the company, looking at bettering processes, even start training people.

    (4) Not everything can be outsourced, focus on continuous self improvement in *ALL* areas of your working life and you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

    This really is what Linux needs - a HUGE and well known company using not only a Linux user dekstop system but also assocaited open source applications to get things done in everyday business, while managing NOT to use any M$ products whatsoever.
