I took my flu shot, last year, and got sick from it.

By 'sick' did you mean 'sick with the flu'?

You probably didn't get the flu from the flu shot.

The flu shot only protects you from certain strains of the flu virus. You probably got one of the many strains of the flu that wasn't covered by the flu shot. This was pretty common last year.

And then, all of a sudden the media ran around screaming "Crisis Crisis" when stocks of the flu shot got low (per the schedule).

Usually when I go into a chain music store, new CD's are about $17 each. Best Buy's prices don't matter to me, because it's for music I never buy...

For Christmas, my wife asked for the Grease two disc soundtrack. Not exactly an obscure title. I looked at Best Buy, Borders and Virgin and found the 1-disc "Highlights from Grease" sound track for $18.99. None of them carried the two disc set. Went to my local music store and found the two disc set (new) for $20. Used two disc set was $15. New "Highlights" single disc was $15. Used was $8.

This is typical, I can usually find a new CD at our local stores for a few bucks less then the big retailers. More importantly, I can actually find the music I'm looking for.

I've given up on the big box retailers. There's absoutely no reason for me to go there.

  5. Re:Is this a bad thing? on Requiem For The Record Store · · Score: 1

All they want is the lowest price, which the large retailers are going to provide.

Lowest price? Usually not. Every time I go into a big box music store, I leave wondering why I even entered the store in the first place.

In my experience, the major chains are too expensive ($17 for a domestic easy-to-find CD? Who the heck pays these prices?), rarely have anything I'm looking for (but they have 100 copies of Britany Spears and Eminem), the staff is clueless once you get out of the top-100 albums, you can't buy used CDs (Why pay $17 when I can get the same thing for $8 used).

Maybe I'm a bit spoiled with our local music stores: Amoeba, and Rasputin (Which some consider a big evil retailer, but their selection still crushes the Big Box music store), among others. Are these a rarity? I've been to similar stores in Seattle, LA, Denver, etc...

Who wants to trek down to ask Record Story Guy about that obscure album when you can sit in front of your computer and make a post on some web site to the world?

The advantage of the record store is that you can get that information in a few minutes. If you make a post on some website, you'll often end up waiting for days...

What about all the useless fees (like athletics- this is slashdot, right?) you don't have any control over?

Actually, at UCSC the athletic fee was voluntary, and all of the sports teams had to do quite a bit of fundraising to fund their own team. We didn't have anything expensive like a big football team or anything.

You paid the fee if you wanted to use the pool, gym or take gym classes, but you had control over that part.

Interesting. I went to UCSC in 91-95 (Collage 8, aka Spam College), and I remember it differently. I distinctly remember there being checkbox for the CalPIRG fees in the bill or application form, but few people checked it. I remember my moral conflict well. I worked in the Student Center for a couple of years, and hung out with the Calpirg folks often. Still, I felt it was wrong for them to have this privledge over all the other student groups.

Still, you're right. The University really had no business acting as bill collector for CalPIRG. The got cheap office space for rent (as with all qualified student run groups), the right to lobby on campus, etc.

No matter where you go in the world you will meet someone from UCSC.

Actually, he did, unless by "NOT get a majority" you really meant "NOT NOT get a majority".

Clinton won the majority during BOTH the 1992 and 1996 elections, in both the popular election and electoral colleges. Let's review:

During the 1992 election, Clinton received 43% of the popular votes, and 68.8% of the electoral college. Bush lost because he received less votes then Clinton, 37.45% of the total, and 31.2% electoral college. Clinton won the majority.

In 1996, Clinton received 49.24% of the popular votes, and 70.4% of the electoral system. Dole received 40.71% of the popular votes, and 29.6% in the electoral college. Again, Clinton won the majority.

By all counts, Clinton won the majority vote in both elections.

Let's compare that to the 2000 election, where Gore received a 48.38% majority of the popular vote, but only 49.4% of the electoral college. Bush lost the popular election, with a 47.87% minority, but he won in the electoral college with 50.4% of the electoral college.
