Wow, that's kinda sad in a way. I grew up listening to Dr. Demento and what I guess they call "alternative rock" these days on that station, though I'm old enough to remember a few bands they played then show up on classic rock stations today! :-)

I lived outside of Oxford from the time I was 9 to the time I was 22, then moved to Oxford in 1993 to finish school, then I worked for Miami for a little over three years before leaving Ohio in '99. I haven't been back in over 7 years.

  6. Re:Go for "Software Architecture" for 200, Alex on The Future of IT in America? · · Score: 1

It's interesting, because I've been in this field for 16 years, and I've never met a pure "software architect" or a pure "programmer", except for a junior level programmer, fresh from school with less than 2 years of on-the-job experience. Sure, when I started out, I mostly just programmed, but as I learned more about business needs, and got to see many examples of good design and bad design, I wound up working in places where I did both architecture and programming, among many other things. This period didn't last long for me, either, in part because before I started working in IT (we called it DP then), my first semi-professional job was as an outside sales rep for a distribution company, that gave me some useful domain knowledge for my first programming job, working for a contract company that helped distributors with computing needs.

This is also a point to consider. Don't just be a "programmer" or a "software architect". Make an effort to learn about a business that interests you, whether manufacturing, distribution, rocket science, geology, whatever you find interesting, and meld that knowledge with your IT skills. Software developers are relatively easy to find. Developers who have domain specific knowledge, while the opportunities are narrower, are generally the last to go during downsizing and offshoring events. Be prepared to renew more than just your computer technical knowledge.

IT means different things in different places. I work at a place where my primary roles are software design and development, but I'm part of the IT department. It's a small shop, as I'm the only full time developer. My boss is the other developer, and he's the IT director, so he's got other fish to fry.

I was very specifically avoiding politics in my message, because I knew it would open a can of worms that I really didn't want to go into. I went so far as to have a paragraph that was basically, "on the other hand, if you leave a big toy like that laying around, someday someone's gonna want to play with it.", but my focus was on general war doctrine vis a vis technology. For the record, I oppose action against Iran, I opposed the war in Iraq from the start, and I opposed our military operations in Yugoslavia.

I neglected to take into account that on slashdot, the politics can of worms is pretty much self-opening these days.

The ideal of these systems is to reduce the passive armor content of armored vehicles so that things like main battle tanks could be made lighter and therefore A) easier to deploy in quantity by airlift and B) faster and longer-ranged.

If they could put such systems on HMMWVs, that would certainly be a plus. Humvees weren't really designed to be APCs (though uparmor kits are available), though, as we've found out much to our dismay. Even with the armor kits, they would still be vulnerable to roadside bombs.

pico (well, nano really) for editing text files. I do not see what so many of my fellow geeks have against this program. It does a wonderful job in this niche.

vi for quick editing, light to medium-duty programming, and sysadmin tasks. It's fast, easy-to-use once you get over the learning curve, and it's installed everywhere.

emacs or jEdit for heavy-duty software construction. When I am in heads down major software development mode, nothing else will do. Well, I like Komodo from ActiveState and WingIDE for Python stuff, but those aren't free-as-in-beer and I'm a right cheap bastard so I'm not apt to part with the cash.

So, while he of course doesn't know the technical underpinnings of interfacing, serging, hemming, and button-holing needed to make pants, he can, in some sense, take credit for our modern pants.
