But that "default desktop" screenshot is pig-ugly. Grey isn't going to pull in the XP-using Teletubby-land loving hordes. I think they should have a nice default background image, and if you want to get rid of it, you can. It can't be hard to improve on "Bliss", anyway.
In the old days you made cassettes of your CDs and LPs and gave copies to your friends. This is illegal (at least in the UK) but the record companies did nothing, apart from that "Home Taping Is Killing Music" logo.
Well, home taping obviously didn't kill music, Simon Cowell and Pete Waterman did. But that aside, the difference between then and now is simply that the record companies are taking a tougher line and are being allowed to do so by their tame politicians. The problem isn't a new one, but the "solution" is.
...and lectures in astronomy. I do quite a bit of photography and I'd read somewhere that Leica lenses (generally considered to be the best 35mm lenses available) are ground to an accuracy of about half a wavelength of light - say 200nm. He just shrugged and said his lenses are accurate to better than 1/10 wavelength. He designed and built the lens grinding machine himself, so he should know.
The Global Organisation for Anti-Terrorist Special Executives (based on Christmas Island) is suing for its acronym URL. A spokesman said, "In the current world situation we want people to be able to locate anti-terrorism resources quickly without being exposed to THAT image".
A similar case is being brought in the US by The United Biscuits Group International Retailers Limited, who feel that consumer appetite for their product is adversely affected by the image of a young lady who has clearly taken a little too much Senokot constipation relief.
Apple has one of the strongest brands in the world. They have fiercely loyal customers (no, I'm not one of them). They have a reasonable licensing policy for their OS (try and get a family multi-computer discount for XP Home Edition, ha ha). Anything they make with an "i" in the name gets snapped up by said loyal customers. If obscure Taiwanese component manufacturers with virtually no brand image can make money, Apple should be coining it in. Jobs just needs another big idea like the iMac and the iPod and everyone will forget about Apple's demise for a few years.
'The only way to get a competitive innovative space is to slowly get rid of the generics and allow a competitive space of branded TLDs for resale..yahoo,.dunn,.yellowpages,.google,.wipo, and a hundred other branded resellers'
With respect, Brad, that's a terrible idea. To prevent cyber-squatting, companies are going to have to buy all the TLDs relating to their name or their line of business. This is going to cost hundreds of dollars each year for no real benefit.
And WTF is.dunn? In Britain Dunn & Co. is a rather dull gentleman's outfitter. Suits you, Sir;-)
I wish I had something faster than an Athlon 1.4 for encoding MP3s. That's a totally processor-bound application. Another example of 100% CPU usage is the XP keygen, but I only do that to keep the room warm, of course - not for any nefarious reasons;-)
Believe me, that whizz-bang CPU will choke and die if you start turning on all the eye candy in Doom 3. id Software are masters at using all that wasted PC headroom!
But it *can* transfer from the buffer at that speed, so if the buffer is reasonably large (say 8MB) then ATA-133 should really be faster in some circumstances.
and then rip it. Unlike us docile Europeans, the 'merkins don't stand for that copy protection crap.
Unfortunately Play.com and CDwow have done an out-of-court deal with the BPI (British Phonographic Industry) which effectively stops them selling non-EU CDs. They used to be the best source of uncrippled stuff. You may need to order direct from the US, but there should be no Customs charges for such a small item.
I just wanted to get an FTP server going and in the end gave up and ran it on a copy of Win2K. Mandrake 7.2 was OK but 8 and 10 have been very flaky IME. Example behaviour - the installer asks you if you want the servers installing but doesn't install the configuration applet needed to set them up. And after the fourth reboot, KDE decided to use miniscule fonts for everything and didn't respond to any changes. No thanks.
In the case of Ireland, the Protestant/Catholic conflict isn't really one of religious dogma. It's more that the Catholics believe the Protestants all get the best jobs, the most money and the most power. This goes back to William of Orange beating James II (exiled Catholic King of England)at the Battle of the Boyne and turning Ireland into a province of Britain. The Protestants were obviously the ruling class in this province.
Red face, palpitations, slight paranoia and bizarrely, extreme short-sightedness (I normally have 20-20 vision). Wore off after 3-4 hours but it was scary as hell.
1 ton = 2240 lb (or 20 cwt or 160 stones, if you're British) . By a happy accident, 1 metric tonne = 2204lb. They are so very nearly equivalent that you can ignore the difference for shock-horror enviro scare stories;-)
I've done a study into this, and the no.1 reason that a large company upgrades its hardware and software is that the manufacturer has declared it obsolete and will no longer support it. In many instances the old systems were barely breaking sweat when they were stripped out and replaced with something 10x faster.
Admittedly, PC hardware isn't directly affected by the withdrawal of support, because the open standard means you can swap failed bits out. However, when MS stop supporting NT or Office 97 you're shafted, because you can't run the replacement on that hardware without spending almost as much as a new box would cost. So they get you in the end.
There was an issue in the UK where doctors would use cryptic abbreviations on patients' notes to warn their colleagues, e.g. "TAPS" and "NFP" meant "Thick As Pig Sh*t" and "Normal For Plymouth" (substitute with the name of whatever provincial town you happen to practice in).
There was a bit of a brouhaha about this a while ago, when patients got the right to see their own records.

Finally, a good reason to become a hardline Islamic fundamentalist!
Yes. VHS tape wears out fast, has terrible resolution and takes up too much space. Buy a DVD recorded and you'll never look back.
Agreed. It's a wet dream if you make keyboards and mice though.

Eddie Izzard's father is a leading light in the UK Institute of Internal Auditors. Strange but true.

Yes, it works for Windows too (look in system32\drivers\etc\hosts). See here for details.
Ah, so you were the guy that bought Windows Me?

I've been defenestrated by XP several times today, and I'm still here ;-)

New Line want to keep it well clear of the year's really big DVD release. Would you dare go head to head against Lucas-before-he-was-crap?

He was just three orders of magnitude out. "K" is near "M" in a keyboard, so when he was typing his speech he hit the wrong letter.
