Even standard Android can do this. Some of the pre-installed applications will be quite useless really, but most of core functionality will work quite fine without a Google account.
While I admit I haven't tried, it should be possible to run an Android phone without ever signing into Google - indeed without a Google account whatsoever. The email application support POP, IMAP or Exchange, the contacts can be synced with SyncML or Exchange (and a few other options I am sure), applications can be sideloaded, IM+ does a pretty good job with Jabber etc. Surely it would make it somewhat more complicated but I am quite sure it is possible.
In other words - Google offer a way for people to run the smart phone without any knowledge about servers and with an extremely simple setup (enter your google account once), but it is in no way forced upon you - so I think it's actually quite acceptable.
In reality I think that Google+ biggest problem is that it is only cool in an extremely nerdy sort of way. Sure, I am not surprised that just about everybody here would prefer Google+ to Facebook, but then again - everybody here also would prefer Linux over Windows, Java over PHP, Computer over Girlfriend etc. A simple fact is, while it can be annoying as hell, Facebook is kinda cool and until Google+ become cooler than Facebook it will not take off.
C'mon - Google+ - read it out loud - it sounds like some laundry detergent.
I know the original post said GPS and Camera, but apart from those two the perfect bet would be a hacked Nook Color:) List price of USD 249 but was sold on eBay for 199 and it runs Android 2.1 (eclair), 2.2 (Froyo) and 2.3 (Gingerbread) just fine and flash 10.2 in the last two of these.
Hey - what if it was the other way around? This is silly. The original could have been a European picture with 3 white guys and it order to fit American political correctness a black had to be edited into the picture. Sigh!
Simple fact is - while America have a considerable black population in central or Northern Europe they do NOT, so seeing a black guy at a business meeting is rare. That is not racism but a simple result of very few black people living there.
While not quite as bad as this - I had the battery on a 12 month old iPAQ expand to double size - enough to break the cover. That in itself is not interesting at all. What IS interesting however is that I actually thought HP would be interested in this (in order to prevent this from happening) but they were not - not at all. I contacted the local HP support, I wrote letters, faxes and emails - with absolutely zero reaction except I could buy a new battery if I wanted. They didn't attempt to stop me from talking - they simply weren't interested at all.
While this one didn't explode it's definitely a faulty battery (the fault happened over a day or two) and I reckon it could easily have caused some damage to the surroundings if only it had been a tad more violent.
Why not use subversion? Files will be accessible using a subversion client (including log + history), as webdav (only current version) and through a standard browser (read-only).
He should just have replied the "babes" that approach him instead of saying: "sorry, haven't got time right now, I am posting a question on/. about how to pick up woman".
Debian Lenny works absolutely perfect on my Eee PC 1000HD. Everything - and I do mean everything - is working flawlessly using only standard Debian packages (yes - with one extra repository added).
Ahem - did you ever use a thinkpad? Remember that weird folding keyboard they once did? Might look fragile but it won't be. Thinkpads might be ugly as hell (actually I personally don't think they are), unsexy and clumsy but they are solid as a rock.
Well - it's hard to say because it's so subjective. It is clearly too big to fit into anything resembling a pocket - so it need to be carried around in some kind of bag - but so would anything with a usable keyboard even the 7 inch version. Still - it is much smaller and MUCH lighter than my "real" laptop - which is a Thinkpad. Since I bought the 1000H the Thinkpad have had a boring life as a desktop computer at home - I simply can't be bothered carrying it and it's power supply around.
As mentioned in another post I originally wanted a 901 with Linux but since it wasn't available I did end up - against my better judgment - buying a 1000H. At the time I was fairly convinced I would regret this since before I had a 7 inch version and loved it for it's tiny size. But I have got to admit that - as it turned out - the 10 inch version is pretty much ideal. I think it's got more to do with keyboard than with display. The 9 inch versions simply have a keyboard that is too small - whereas the 10 inch is just exactly a size where you can type without having to readjust a lot coming from a normal laptop. Anyway - I do love my 10 inch "netbook" even though I consider it more like a real laptop and do just about anything I would have done on my trusty old thinkpad before.
Ha, ha - I originally bought a 4G with Xandros and I loved it. When it got stolen I tried to get a 900 with Linux (not available in this country), then later a 901 with Linux (not available in this country) and last a 1000H with Linux (not available in this country).
It is very easy to claim XP is outselling Linux when they refuse to sell the Linux version - probably because they make more money on the XP version. Asus seems to have forgotten how they got into this market and why their 4G/700 series was such a huge success.
Yeah - I guess this is off-topics, but seriously, I think you need to check up on history too. I doubt anybody can argue against the fact that currently Europe in general is far more democratic than US and most European countries (with one or two exceptions) has very strict control of weapons. Also I could mentioned Philippines as the opposite example - just about everybody is armed and yet they've been screwed over by various governments over the past 50 years.
I read through the first half of the comments, and this being/. I was extremely surprised not to see a single mention of Spankwire. I mean - come on - free porn:)
I'll be very disappointed if this one doesn't get moderated "informative"
Seriously. Your job is - as far as I can gather from the article - to make the product. The marketing people are challenged with selling it. Let them do their job and if they think 6.0 will sell better - why bother arguing even if their decision is stupid. If the product contains bugs you will be blamed - if it does not sell the marketing and/or the sales people will be blamed. This just seems to me like a internal political infight that is just not worth it mostly because it can not be won.
I was quite an early adopter of the Eee PC 4G and before I bought it I sort of expected that my very first task would be throwing Debian at it.
I changed my mind rather quickly though. The rather limited OS that the gadget came with actually worked quite well. I loved the fact that it booted almost instantly. I quickly enabled the advanced desktop and removed the unionfs to get some more space, but I found myself reverting back to the simple desktop and use that (I should mention that I have been a UNIX guy for something like 15 years). My own behavior and preferences surprised me so I did give it quite a bit of thought. The thing is - the Eee PC is NOT a laptop. It's not even a PC (remember what that means - personal computer) really (the user is called user - and I store everything on thumbdrives). In my opinion it's some kind of internet appliance and as such I couldn't really care less what it runs as long as it is quick, accessible, easy and works.
I had TWO complaints of the original 4G - battery life and lack of bluetooth. I so badly wanted to buy the 901 when it came out but unfortunately in Malaysia where I currently stay - Asus in their wisdom have decided only to sell the Eee PC with Windows XP. Result - 2 month ago Asus was everywhere - now Acer Aspire One's are everywhere. The funny thing is - I could probably remove the XP and get Debian going in an hour or so. But I really don't want to do that. I want the 901 to be the appliance that I found the 4G to be and for once have a gadget that I CAN tweak but really don't have to to get it doing what I want it to do.

Lesbian porn is the only exception I can think of :)
Similar specs - except the screen resolution - the Archos 70 is 800 × 480 whereas the Nook Color is 1024 x 600.

Your biggest problem is NOT your netbook, but the fact that you ask on /. how to look "manly".

Ooops - time to set some ulimits :) You just took down my laptop by proxy (and the proxy was myself).

Hmmmm, I agree with the first part, but in my case they seem to emerge after a long time as - odd socks (after I've thrown out the first odd socks).
