Try again. Cheapest is $29.99 for a standalone player. Also, a DVD drive is a perfectly good player, and come standard in most computers, which can hook up to most TVs with the right cables. And nevermind that if you shop around, you can buy a standalone player for less than $20 USD at retail outlets. DVD players are incredibly cheap.

To say that something that takes an extra perhaps 3 seconds is somehow "insane" means you've never studied history to know what a "human rights violation" actually is. You probably are also OK with many other things the US government does that are flat out wrong, but you don't care because they're either no longer fashionable to decry, or it doesn't directly affect you.

I've traveled recently, and maybe it's different for different ports (I flew out of GRR), but I had zero hassle. I just put my laptop in the bin; didn't even have to turn it on, like I was expecting. They even forgave me when I forgot to take off my shoes. Honestly, if this is the way that border searches are normally done, I see absolutely no reason we're even talking about this. I know we hear about people's laptops being confiscated, etc, but there are also times you have to remember that those who've been wronged speak the loudest. People travel over the US border every day without hassle, but we never hear about it - only the one or two cases where something goes wrong, and you usually don't even get the full story when it does hit the news.

Sorry, I know you're new here, but this is Slashdot. A lot of people here are very smart, and really good at arguing. If you can't take it, then leave, but there's no reason to post just "FUCK YOU" unless you want to get modded into the ground (here's hoping a mod is watching). I mean, really. Take three deep breaths, and realize that, yes, it is ok to be wrong sometimes, and yes, I am a real person, but that you really shouldn't take it personally. We're just trading words here, after all. We can't see, hear, touch, taste, or smell each other in the least. How can you frankly get that worked up over something like that? Take a step back, examine yourself, and lurk more. Even though slashdot suffers from groupthink (anti-microsoft, libertarian, pro-science), most posts modded +5 truly are intelligent and well thought out. Read a few of them from time to time, and try not to just start yelling profanity as an excuse for not having a real response. If you really can't think of one better than that, it's OK to just not respond at all; the other person can't do anything about being ignored, so the topic dies. I hope to someday see you posting with the pride we all once had, but with the advent of idle, I just can't see that happening with you millions.

I'm pretty sure everyone here already realizes that there's a lot more to life than activation issues, but considering Microsoft has well over 90% marketshare, it just happens to keep coming up.

Particularly when it's not a big deal

It's a big deal as soon as it affects YOU, but since it doesn't, it's easy to ignore what other people are saying, right?
