    That's why I'm so glad the VP of my department has gotten the CEO to go along with him having to sign off on any contract we get. He makes sure that the things we promise are sane and are goals we can hit, and places blame on the salesguys when it's due. Sales behaves better, we have attainable (but still difficult targets), and everyone wins.

    That may be the case sometimes, but techies still have a damn sight better idea about what the suits do than the suits have an idea about what the techies do, which is what I think the grandparent was getting at.

    You should write up a case for hiring a PFY. Write a list of ALL the expertise you're expected to know, as well as weekly time spent doing everything in your normal duties, and an estimate for support time. Make it a worst-case scenario (it WILL happen, I promise), and you'll be looking at a lot of hours of work, you won't be able to handle it by yourself. Not to mention if there are issues with the servers AND with the users. You can't deal with two problems at once, because you'll end up not solving either of them.

    Those of us who actually know what we're doing don't bother to get MCSE's. We hire the MCSE's and tell them to sit on their hands and watch before they break something, and teach them how to actually fix things.

    They treat them exactly like company property. If they treated them like personal property, they wouldn't get thrashed because it would directly cost them money to replace it. People see know that the "business" pays for the computer and break it either out of laziness and inattentiveness, or sometimes even malice because they saw Bob got a new machine, and his is faster than theirs, and they want it, even though they only play Solitaire and type up Word documents.

    Hers was a 2001... perhaps I just didn't have the right service manual, but it's still a pain to access compared to many other cars I've worked on. I've heard the same from many other VW owners as well, especially when you get into non-trivial parts replacement (more than just the filters).

    Hint: In most of those cities (and in Denver for sure, and apparently Wisconsin too), the sign with the Exit number on it is on the left side of the sign if it's a left-hand exit, and on the right side of the sign if it's a right-hand exit.

    Too bad Volkswagen can't design their cars to be even minimally user serviceable. It took me 30 minutes to replace the cabin air filter in my wife's old Jetta. Takes about 3 minutes on my Corolla. I'd like Volkswagens better if they were designed to be repaired, and not just built. You have to take half the vehicle apart to get to anything, which drives maintenance costs through the roof.

    It's not too bad, actually. The only thing you have to be aware of is that glowplugs take a bit of time and electricity to warm up. Otherwise, it's just as efficient on start/stop. It's varied speed loads that kinda take the piss out of diesel, to my untrained eye (varying the RPM's constantly).

    Thank you for being environmentally and fiscally conscious WITHOUT being a douchebag to everyone else on the road. Some "hypermiling" lunatics cause more problems than they solve because they fuck up traffic for everyone else, which results in more net pollution from everyone trying to deal with them on the road, even if they save a couple of dollars a week. Selfish twats...

    I would bet you all the money I have right now that he didn't know the Hebrew meaning for golem, and was in fact trying and failing to reference the Lord of the Rings character. It's very nice that you give him the benefit of the doubt, but the writer gives way too many places to doubt to make that even slightly noble.

    But DX9->DX10 requires an OS "upgrade". DX8->DX9 doesn't, so it's not nearly as big of a deal.

    Yes, but some people have a moral objection to it. So they just switch away wholesale, which kills the market for them even more. You're not even using the OS that their game runs on.

    In many areas of the country, it IS a lot for the type of job they're doing, especially since it almost certainly doesn't require a serious education. It's not exactly a "highly skilled" profession, it's just sales. A kid with a high-school diploma and some interest can do it.

    If power exists, people desire it and attempt to consolidate it. There are very, very, VERY few truly selfless people in the world, and they are the only ones I would really feel good about being leaders. Too bad it's damn hard to tell who they are, and there's no way they'd get very far in politics as it is.
