I just had to remove that Norton shit from my aunt's computer because it would take 30-60 seconds to scan any MS Office document that was opened, when it was opened. Doesn't matter if it just scanned it, that it was on the local machine, and it didn't seem to even try to cache definitions in memory or anything. It just got the Word window border open, and "Scanning for viruses..." in the status bar for the next minute. I replaced it with the free version of AVG, and it started behaving like the brand new computer it was.
For pretty decent security, I just recommend Firefox, AVG, and a bit of education on safe browsing habits, and which software is more likely to be safe to download/install, etc.
Step 1) Set up a 64bit Linux environment Step 2) Set up the 64bit version of PostgreSQL Step 3) Start using a database that can access more than 2GB of memory
Not quite. I was mostly objecting to your "personal email" comment, especially since it's webmail, and therefore no special software on the machine. Do you also disallow all personal calls at work? Check cell phones at the door? My problem may be with management, but you having no problem with the policy is part of the issue.
Bathroom breaks are 3 minutes long, once every 4 hours, and you have to sign up the day before for your timeslot. If you didn't, well, tie it in a knot. If we catch you looking up from your screen, we expect you to work later for every second that is spent not staring at a screen. We have cameras, we will know if you are doing non-work-related tasks or daydreaming.
We have just put in one 3" plastic pot with a plastic daisy in it at the front of the office. This is expected to boost morale. Have a nice day.
I think that CS people should get more experience in IT. I've seen so many people with CS degrees just toss all kinds of stuff on the stack and not know why it slows down, they don't understand the connection between the software and the hardware resources. But that's completely off-topic:)
But if the cost is spread among all users, and heavier on the users who cause the most cost, it's a self-correcting system. Nothing is perfect, but this sounds like it's a pretty good compromise all around.
Luckily our IT guy isn't in that "most" category. He just likes dicking with computers, and he's very good at it, hardware and software-wise, Linux/Unix knowledgable, and is patient and easy to talk to. I keep looking around to see if there's a camera and someone's making an episode of "You only THOUGHT your IT guy wasn't Nick Burns!"
So, do you just hate MMX/SSE, or do you just not do anything that requires it? Because a processor that does MMX/SSE faster will be faster on applications that use those accelerators, period, and that's all that really matters when you get down to it. It's still a valid comparison between the two processors.
And yet, Casino Royale made assloads of money with a relative unknown taking over a familiar spot.
Star "branding" is bullshit that's pushed to make overpaid actors more so. Putting Tom Hanks in "Gigli" might have gotten it a million more at the box office, but even he couldn't have saved that piece of shit, even with Affleck and J-Lo's "brands" along for the ride.
I had to order a DS on backorder, and had to wait a couple weeks to get it shipped. Any time I've seen them in stock on bestbuy.com or target.com, they disappear within hours, sometimes minutes for the black and white ones.
My sister runs a lot of the old Win3.x games on her XP non-admin account successfuly, because I installed them under her "Documents and Settings" directory (equivalent to ~/) and I knew they tend to want to store.INI files in the Windows directory, so I just gave her account access to those and problem solved
Wait... so you gave her non-admin account access to the Windows directory? Which part of that said "good security" to you? Now any app she runs has full access to the Windows directory. She may as well be an admin if she has carte blanche to the system directory.
It's telling you something, but how do you weed out that the 572nd time it tells you it that it's actually important, and all the other times were just fluff?
Man, I LOVE taking half a minute out of my game to block an annoying asshole! Why should it be made easier, it's already buried knee-deep in menu shit?
I'm 26 and I finished KH2 a few months ago. If you like RPG's and action games, it's a great combo, has the strengths of both. I also just got a DS Lite with Mario and some Sonic GBA games for when I'm traveling.
But I also still play with Legos;) Legos are one of the greatest inventions ever.
You can sign on to gmail's messaging with Gaim. It's just another Jabber server.

Actually, more laptops than desktops are being sold right now. And there are very, very few laptops that support 4GB.

/me trundles off to create a website that asks users to upload their private keys to guarantee the strength of the security...

I'm refuting the argument that MI:3 wouldn't have succeeded without Tom Cruise. Bond is a brand, the actor himself is not nearly as important.

And apparently, Canadians also have a localized spelling of "broadband"...
And hopefully in a few years, frogs will evolve wings so they don't bump their asses when they hop. I'm not gonna hold my breath.

Is it sad or scary when hyperbolic advertising isn't?
The new XPS systems don't ship with Vista if they have NVIDIA cards in them, from what I hear. They still ship with XP.

Do I need a </sarcasm> tag?
Because it was the first high-profile, next generation FPS that was dedicated to a console? Frat guys are an important market, you know
Because it doesn't take special problem sets and programming on the current supercomputers?
You still had use of it until that shit happens, though. Which is still invaluable. I'd rather have a gun for half a fight than not at all.
