My biggest complaint about Simcity 3000 was that I had to spend to much time micromanaging things like each water pump or police station, instead of focusing on the big picture stuff like planning out and building my city. I think I spent about 10 hours playing SimCity 3000 before I shelved it. And this is after spending countless hours playing the original (mostly on the SNES) and Simcity 2000 (on the PC).

I do seem to remember at the time I thought SimCity 3000 was a bit heavy on the system requirements, though I was trying to play it on a K6 which was outdated even when the game came out. I don't remember the graphics being too improved over SimCity 2000 which ran quite happily on a 486 DX2.

It's because people didn't like the digital gauges when they first came out in the 1980's. Not sure why, maybe it was just because they were too different, or maybe it was nothing against the gauges themselves but the general unreliability of the electronics in some of the cars that had them *cough*GM*cough*. In any case, they seemed to be a fad that more or less died out by the early 1990's. However, they do seem to be making a comeback now and I haven't really head anyone complaining about them as much.

  13. Re:Stop 16:9 displays! on Windows 8 and Screen Resolution: WXGA Still Most Popular · · Score: 1

Actually, it wouldn't be so terrible. You could probably replace a dual 4:3 or 5:4 set up with one monitor then and keep all your resolution and not have to deal with the black bar through the middle of the screen. Part of the reason I dislike 16:9 is that it's too narrow to effectively replace a dual monitor set up with one screen, and two 16:9 screens is awkward and takes up too much desk space.

  14. Re:1366x768 on Windows 8 and Screen Resolution: WXGA Still Most Popular · · Score: 1

I'm sure that part of the reason is due to the limitation of the graphics hardware available back then. If I recall correctly the refresh rate was also well below 60Hz too, which may or may not matter depending on what you're doing with it. In some ways, that monitor was ahead of its time. My guess is that a decent GPU from 2012 wouldn't have a problem handling that resolution at a refresh rate of 60 Hz.

I just want some higher DPI. The 1600x1200 that the 20" monitors come in is okay (and I easily prefer that over 1920x1080 despite slightly less pixels) but if they were 2048x1536 (as seen in the iPad) or even greater it would be awesome.

Actually, it started out as a comic book series, so what many consider "the original TV show" is actually considered a bastardization to some. Like many, I grew up with the TV series and wasn't even aware of the existence of the comic books until years later. So in some ways, it's kind of hard to get all worked up over the reboot supposedly wrecking the franchise, as different people have different views on just what the franchise is. That, and I suspect that simply rewatching the 80's TV show 20+ years later would end up completely changing what I remember from my childhood. Probably something that's simply best not revisited.

You can get them apart, but you risk breaking enough of the plastic fasteners that it won't go back together right, and/or marring the case trying to work a knife or something in to get it started. I haven't taken apart an iPad but it doesn't look easy. As the GP suggested there may not be much repairing going on, though perhaps part of the refurbishment process is transplanting the guts to a new case after busting the old one open to get to the battery.
