Actually, if I remember right I heard a story once of a data center in a northern climate that tried to pump in cool outside air to cool their data center. Apparently while the air was cool, it was also somewhat damp, which wasn't good for the electronics. So eventually, they just got tired of the condensation and corrosion and switched back to A/C.
It can't be too bad though, I would think that an A/C unit cooling off a building with an outside temp below freezing would be very efficient.
Ron Paul is the only Republican who actually would have a chance of winning the general election. Anyone who thinks Giuliani or Romney can win the general election are entirely delusional, as both those are positioning themselves as Bush 2.0 to win the primary.
Actually, a lot depends on who the Democrats choose as their nominee. I would have said the same thing about Bush winning the election in 2004, but then the Democrats gave us John Kerry. Giuliani and Romney could easily win against Hilary Clinton if you ask me.
Well, cell phones would be a great place to start. It's pretty rare to see someone driving erratically because of kids in the backseat, passengers in the car, or pranks by coworkers but I see people driving poorly due to cell phones every time I go out. Driving while on a cell phone is hazard and should be banned, period.
I would guess that if you liberally wiped down your hands with an alcohol wipe, all traces of it would be gone within a couple of minutes tops. It's not something that's going to linger around, the alcohol in those wipes evaporates away very quickly.
Even so, I've never fallen into a toilet, nor have I ever known another guy to fall into a toilet. Even in cases of grogginess and/or alcohol involved.
Falling into toilets seems to be purely a problem for women.
You can do it if you want. The GPU fan died on one of my video cards. I took a passive heatsink that originally cooled a Pentium Pro 200 (big sucker) and used some thermal epoxy to glue it straight to the video chipset. Ran a bit warmer than stock, and I lost a couple of PCI slots, but it worked.
They're nowhere near as common as enthusiast sites would have you believe, and even in most machines that have them, they're not using anything close to 500W of juice.
Part of the problem is that many computer power supplies seem to be incapable of running near their rating. As such, builders have adapted by way overspecing the power supply (ie, a "500W" power supply for a computer that might draw 200W max). For some reason, we just accept this.
iMacs are pretty quiet, they compete with many laptops. However, but they are still doing it all wrong. I don't want the HDD and cooling fan(s) in the monitor where it's going to be only a couple feet from my head and only inches away from the speakers. I'd much rather put them on the floor or under the dusk where I don't have to hear them as much.
Media can't be "consumed" no matter how hard you try.
That's the way it used to be with tapes and records, each time you played it back it would degrade the media a little bit. Play it back enough times, and it would eventually become unusuable - in other words you "used up" the media, or in other words it had been consumed. DRM is basically a way for them to bring back the idea of limited plays on a digital file that should last forever.
Yes, yes, indeed there would be an outcry if anyone deliberately did this for males.
However, your imaginary math book for boys describes almost every math book that's ever been written, even if the authors weren't writing with that intent. Find me a mechanics text book that has examples of things more traditionally associated with girls, rather than boys. Mine (even recent ones) were all weaponry, death, warfare, go carts, snooker balls. Even the modern, politically correct ones show clear signs of this kind of bias towards males. We've done such a good job historically of making masculine the default gender, that it's hard for a male to even spot how biased the things he's reading are.
That's why it's not outrageous when someone tries to redress the balance.
So males are automatically associated with weaponry, death, warfare, go karts, and snooker balls? That's about as bad as automatically associating girls with cute bunny rabbits, frilly dresses, kittens, and scented markers. Why don't we cut out the sexism and just start writing good books that appeal to anyone?
Or in the case of high schoolers, what classes did they take? When I graduated, there were several 4.0's in my graduating class. While they were certainly smart, they weren't risk takers when it came to their GPA, to the point where they wouldn't take AP or advanced courses if they didn't think they could get an A in it. I can only wonder how that worked out for them.
Not that I'm defending macs in any way, but you do realize that there have been quite a few remote exploits (in the wild, not theoretical) that require nothing other than having a windows computer online and having its card pulled by another infected machine, right? It's not about if you're "smart" enough not to click on something, but if you were a bit brighter you'd already know that.
Those days are also over (atleast for the most part). Windows now comes with its firewall on by default, and those wide open services have been secured a lot better. It's not just a Windows thing either, I remember the days when a Redhat 5/6 install on the open internet would get pwned rather quickly too.
I'd say about 1/3 of the people I know watch little to no TV nowadays. I don't watch it either (though on Wednesday I did dig out my old, soon to be obsoleted portable to catch the coverage of the bridge collapse). Even when I did watch TV, I was still somewhat of an outcast, sticking to channels like Discovery (this is before they went more mainstream with shows like Mythbusters) rather than watching the crap on network TV.
Good grief, for $10 a day you can practically eat out at Taco Bell for every meal. $3.33 per meal, drinking water of course. That's a couple burritos. And you know why? RICE AND BEANS!!!! Except for the "nice" meat products Taco Bell ingredients are dirt cheap. I'm not suggesting you DO eat at Taco Bell, mind you. You can fill the bulk of your basic needs for fat/carbs via legumes and grains for about $1 per day and the ability to heat water to boiling. Vary the selection a bit. Spend another buck or two a day on fresh produce and you'll be eating healthier than almost everyone in the entire country.
Eaxctly. The local Taco bell here has had a 1/2 pound bean and potato burrito on the value menu for $0.99 forever now. For $3 and change, you can get 1.5lbs of food that will fill most anyone up. Considering that you don't have to prepare the food or do dishes, it's a pretty good deal.
Either they make VERY little money, or they need to move because THEY CAN'T AFFORD WHERE THEY LIVE. My inlaws are real estate agents, and have to constantly explain to people that they can't afford the houses/areas they like. If you're killing yourself working just to make rent, find a cheaper place. The one exception I can think of is if you can't move far because of a job and the only cheaper place around is crime ridden and you want to keep your kids away from that.
He said that they can afford the rent, child care, and basic needs so it sounds like they are doing ok. So maybe they can't afford the new car or the HDTV, but those are luxuries.
I swear, someone on mininova is getting paid by someone at Poweriso. If you ask questions on the forums like "what's so great about.daa?", you get banned.
Now there's a great business model - trying to sell software to a group of people who hang around a site used for software piracy.
Seriously, I've always found that CRTs look better with ClearType off. I find every font on the sample screen ahrder to read than the Windows examples.
Cleartype works by subpixel rendering, in other words treating each red, green, and blue elements of each pixel seperately to render the fonts. Cleartype assumes that the elements in each pixel are arranged like how LCDs arrange them, which is the reason why it looks terrible on CRTs since they arrange the elements differently. Though you can get away with it on (some) Trinitrons because they arrange their pixels more like an LCD.
6) Await litigation for conducting an illegal search, infringement of privacy and god alone knows what else.
Looks like you missed part 2c:
"c) Customer refuses to rewind and display camera contets? Seize camera, call the cops, end." In other words, the customer can refuse the search, but then you just call the cops and let them sort it out.
The arrest rate for bank robbery is about 60 percent*(!) That means about 40% of the time, you can get away with it. So if you manage to steal $100,000 each time, you can expect, on average, to keep $40,000 per robbery in the long run. As such, it seems capping the punishment at a number less than 100% of the amount stolen won't be too harsh of a deterrent. If the punishment is set to less than 40%, robbing banks would even be profitable even with the punishment factored in.

Similar things happen to people who live in Coon Rapids, which is the name of a real town in Minnesota.

Of course all the surviving Roman bridges are well built. All the crappy ones fell down centuries ago and are long forgotten.
Like he says, the iPhone is a cool toy, but how exactly has it revolutionized the cell phone world? That's right, it hasn't.

A lot of that is just nostalgia. Try catching some episodes of something you didn't watch as a kid - a lot of it is just crap.
Is TV dead?

I believe that would be "excessive use of the color white".
It would appear that we have found the real reason behind Blackle!
