I've tried it, altough only with the higher (128+) bitrate samples. What I found is that it all depends on the system your playing it through.
On my computer speakers it all sopunded the same after about 128, on headphone it was more nociteable (around 198). But if hooked it up to my home stereo I could easily tell the difference even at 256 to 320.
So it all dipends on your equipment (and your listening environment of course).
Needless to say the CD's played on my home stereo also sounded better than CD's played on my computer.
The whole point of Halon was that it could put out fires with out killing people or damaging electronics. The only trouble is that it's really really bad for the ozone layer.
The best replacement for Halon currently is FM-200, as some else has already mentioned.

You're probably correct as far as it goes, but if you are reading silently you can skip the step of turning a word into a sound.
I know that there have been words I learned from reading that I had no idea what so ever how to pronouce, but it did not stop me from learning them from there context.
Also I find that when I am reading very quickly I sometimes read an entire sentence, or at least a phrase, at one time.
Back in the old days when you needed a different boot disk for every game I used to get out the graph paper and optimize my memory by hand.
The worst I ever did was come out equal with the optimizer and usally I could save 10K ~ 20K.
Actually the concept of the nuclear pulse engine (NASA now calls it "External Pulsed Plasma Propulsion") was demonstrated to work back in the 50's using a scale model driven by high explosives.
It worked because the blast wave bounced off a "pusher plate" and also vaporized part of the surface for propellant.
The only real engineering problems had to do with limiting the acceleration on the crew to a reasonable level and recovering from a misfire.
The project was killed for political reasons (The nuclear test ban treaty etc...), but NASA is now looking into again.
Do a search on "Project Orion" for more information.
You're right on about the " long, somewhat painful ride."
But I'm afraid your too optimistic thinking that "Americans will search inward for values and ways of life that don't depend on maintaining material hegemony".
Americans as a whole have never been good at self-examination and taking the long view.
I think it just as likely that we will turn to the one thing in which we are still the undisputed heavyweight champions. Our military!
Well I for one sent Senator Brownback a nice note.
I may not be one of his constituents, but I figure maybe if he gets enough of a possitive response he'll know it's in his best interest to keep supporting the little guy, and hopefully some other politicians will get the idea.
Usually (in my limited experience) when a company will only allow US citizens on site it's because they have a government contract, and they don't want the PITA of getting approval for foreign nationals.
I built one of those 10 years ago when I was in high school. I don't think the neighbors ever found out where the huge dent in there garage door came from.:)
That was a great summary and explanation. Thank you
As noted elsewhere in this thread: Silver tarnish is not Silver Oxide, it is a Sulfide.

That doesn't sound all that different from what I was taught in public school.
And on that note;
does anyone know of an easy way to encrypt a directory or file system while still being able to use it fairly transparently?
WRONG!

Good idea's, but i think you mean insect-eye not eagle-eye.
Excellent points!
Mod Parent Up!
That's cool!
I wish I had some mod points left.

Marble madness was awsome!
I can't wait to try out Marble Madness II in Mame with my new trackball.
I don't see any mention of it on the mame sites, but hopefully emulation won't take too long.
Are you perhaps refering to "Project Orion"?

You've got to be kidding!!!
Selling content is easy. It just has to be the right content.
Well said!
Mod parent up, I've already used all my points for today.

Hopefully I'm wrong.
