There was some talk to move the whole portage tree to a database. It could be *much* better this way, performance wise. But that was a few years ago. I have no clue whether someone is working on that.

Of course. But it will still remain a bit of an hassle this way. If we want to play those disc the way we currently are playing dvds on our linux box, we'll have to wait until someone actually crack the encryption.

It seems to be working for all disc produced so far. I don't think revoking the player key will do much good but since it's not a breach à la DECSS (the encryption is not cracked, he just happen to stumble on a key), I'm sure movie studios will find a way to render this particular key obsolete with future releases.

I don't think you should say that people are 'pissing away hours of life'. You don't like the game, it's your opinion and, like you, I accept anyones opinion. What makes us 'ticks' is not as easy to explain as you seem to think. I really, really like katamari damacy. I don't know why, it's pure brainless fun. They're ain't no strategy either and it's arguably even more brainless than animal crossing. You just roll your ball of things everywhere. I'm not sure why I like katamary or animal crossing so much (I found it to be the perfect DS game, of all things), but I don't feel like I'm wasting my time playing it. Or not more than when I play video games, in general.

I'm not sure that's entirely true. You see, under the regime in North Korea, a hell lot of people choose to join the army in order not to starve and have a 'decent' life. Remember that NK had (maybe still has?) severe povrety and famine problems in their hands, and most of the humanitarian help went straigth to the soldiers. The result of this is that they now have a huge military forces, something along the line of the US army in term of man power. If the US had difficulty moving in the desert facing a much smaller army in Irak, imagine what would it be like to face an almost 1:1 ratio of soldiers. I don't think the US could invade NK, nukes or not. It would just be a *total* mess.

So the games industry wants to know what fuels piracy? Well, stuff like this certainly helps quite a bit.

How? If you just download the game, you won't be able to enjoy it unless you buy some cars and tracks to play with. And you probably won't be able to do that since your modded ps3 has good chances of beign flagged as a non-legit unit by the online store. This sort of thing can actually force more people to buy their games and not to mod their console.
