Possible Virtual Console Titles for Wii Launch
The site PlayNintendo has up a list of possible launch titles for the Wii Virtual Console. Nothing on the list is particularly surprising, with classics like Sonic, various Mario titles, Metroid, and Castlevania filling out the roster. The article author goes on to discuss his source for the information, sharing additional tidbits he's learned. "I have received info from them before that has turned out true, including a tip back before E3 that Wii could ship as early as September with 20 titles. With the fact that Broadway has been in Nintendo's hands for some time, the console could, in fact, ship late September. However, they also stated that October is much more likely and if Nintendo did decide to wait, there would be more like 30 titles for launch. With the launch list continuously growing, that one has all but been confirmed as true too." With Nintendo's big announcement due later this week, we shouldn't have long to wait before this is confirmed or disproven.
Notable omission: Super Mario Bros. 3.
Nonetheless, it's still an exciting list.
Quidquid latine dictum sit, altum sonatur.
Why not all titles? One could fit nearly every NES game on a single dvd. Storing these old (yet great) games on a server would be trivial. The Big N owns all the rights to them. Why not make all of them available at launch?
The days of the digital watch are numbered.
What I find interesting here is that some of the games are not traditional Nintendo titles:
Bonk's Adventure - A Turbo Grafix 16 title (A great system, IMHO, since the same cartridge could be used on the main console AND the hand held console!)
Sonic the Hedgehog - How on earth did they manage to license this one? I'm surprised that Sony would let Nintendo do this.
Love sees no species.
1) Accorting to the article, the Wii "could" ship "late September"? It's about mid-September and we *don't know the release date or price*! How close do they plan to cut it?
2) Are the old games going to be updated so that I can e.g. play Super Mario Kart online? I'd pay a lot for that feature alone...
Apology to Ubuntu forum.
Meant to say Sega, not Sony. Yikes. Time for some coffee. (o:

Duckhunt. Nuff said. (And you said the Wiimote wasn't a light gun!)
If this signature is witty enough, maybe somebody will like me.
How about a new punch out? Come on Nintendo, punch out and super punch out were among my favorite games. However we are long overdue for a punch out on a new console. They could easily make a fun game on one of their machines, hell the original punch out arcade came with dual monitors...hmmm...let me think...maybe there is another Nintendo console that features 2 screens.
I can't be the only one clamoring for new punch out, so come on Nintendo, I don't want to Give Up or Retire, I want to keep it clean and come out boxing!

Of course there's no guarantee that these are VC titles but I'd guess it's very likely. Personally I can't wait for GOLDEN AXE - the game so awesome that my mum beat it.
Sega's more or less official Virtual Console lineup is here at IGN. There are Sega games on that list that aren't on that 26 game list posted in the summary so I think that 26 game list is probably fake.
Perhaps Nintendo is busy trying how to keep the "Nigga Stole My Bike" cut scene from the original Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! game from offending its customers of African descent.
In case you don't want to go to IGNorant.com, here's the list:
- Ecco the Dolphin
- Altered Beast
- Toe Jam & Earl
- Golden Axe
- Columns
- Sonic the Hedgehog
- Ristar
Most of these have seen releases in compilations and as extras for other games, so there would be interest if you only wanted one or two of them. However, I believe both Ristar and Toe Jam & Earl (hell yeah!) haven't had a re-release yet.Once has to wonder, though, why we haven't seen more titles. Perhaps the ESRB is keeping a tighter lid on Nintendo and Turbografix titles (though there were some expected titles listed at E3), or Sega applied for their ratings earlier.
This raises some interesting applications for something like Animal Crossing on the Wii. In the gamecube version, you recieved playable versions of some old NES titles as gifts from other characters in the game. If Nintendo plays their cards right, they may be able to link something like this to their online content delivery system, allowing users to receive any title offered for Nintendo's virtual console for free, simply by unlocking it in another game.

is Samba de Amigo. It's hard to find at any reasonable price for Dreamcast due to the special controllers, but on the Wii they could simply replace the maracas with two Wii-motes. I'd actually be even more interested in a new version with additional songs.
Nintendo doesn't own the rights to 3rd party games
Thank you very much for pointing this out. Despite Slashdot constantly covering topics like Free Software, copyright infringement, and fair use, it's really sad that we still get posts like the OP. They loudly proclaim their sage advice while displaying complete ignorance of the subject at hand.
The sad part is that the source of this phenomenon is really the lack of a good grasp of logic. It seems that many people build up towering, convoluted structures of reasoning over time, and never bother to check if anything is inconsistent. Even worse, pretty much all of these posts have a logical semi-equivalent that sounds ridiculous to pretty much everybody (by "everybody" I mean "everybody on Slashdot"). For example, I doubt that a story about DVD licensing would garner a reply claiming MPEG holds the copyright to all movies released on DVD. Of course, now I'll get a reply that links to just such a post.
I, for one, hope that Nintendo can acquire the N64 Banjo series + DK64 from Microsoft, those are some of my favorite games for the N64, and it would rock if they'd be downloadable on the VC.
they won't have most of the games at launch. I kind of assumed that when they listen the systems that they'd have most if not all the titles. I thought I'd be able to get Golden Axe, Dragon Warrior 4, Blades of Steel, Kickle Cubicle, and other games I loved in the past. This definitely lessens my want to get the system at launch now.

Show us the damned prices, already!
There's no point giving out these rumours if you don't give folks a price to work from. (price > £3.00 = they lose)
So... let me get this straight: you're not going to buy a Wii at launch because they're not offering old, quasi-obscure games from old systems that you loved in the past the moment the system is released, and that you assumed would be on the list but aren't?
I volunteer take that horrible Wii off your hands, if you'd like.
In all seriousness, remember that this is just list at launch. Nintendo's not going to bring out every single game when the system launches: it would be tremendously overwhelming. I think waves of a few weeks between game releases will be ideal. Don't worry, I'm sure you'll start to see your favorite titles popping up soon enough. And while you wait, why not try some of the new Wii titles that are coming out. I hear this new-fangled "Twilight Princess" thing might be good, might be worth picking up.
No, Mr. Green. Communism is just a red herring.
