  1. Re:Funny, but lame on How Can We Convert the US to the Metric System? · · Score: 2

I don't particularly like the Imperial measuring system either, but at least it's not based entirely on arbitrary bullshit.

Meter: The other suggested defining the metre as one ten-millionth of the length of the Earth's meridian along a quadrant, that is the distance from the equator to the north pole.

Kilogram: The kilogram was originally defined as one thousand times "the absolute weight of a volume of pure water equal to the cube of the hundredth part of a meter, and at the temperature of melting ice"

You have to pick one standard unit of bullshit for every fundamental measurement, length, mass, time, etc. All other units can then be derived from these fundamental units. So of course length and mass are all "made-up" for any measurement system. But I don't think it's a good idea to make up multiple units for each type like imperial!

Besides, you can reason the original idea of the 'meter' is somewhat rational and neutral (at least for earthlings).
But using the diameter of the kings left nutt as an inch can hardly be called sane.

Does this mean KVMs won't work for DVI connections with HDCP?

Bittorrent splits files up into pieces of about 64KB, then makes a hash of _each_ of those, as well as the entire file.

Yeah so... that only ensures no one RUNS / USES a corrupt file at the END of the download. You can still poison a torrent.

    Example:

User X starts downloading a torrent, then adds one ~64KB of corrupt data (as per example above) that still passes the MD5. Remember user X hasn't finished the total download so they don't MD5 the entire thing yet. However, other people inclusing user Y are still downloading these BAD pieces.

After about an hour later on the XViD movie user Y finishes and does an MD5 on the ENTIRE file. Yup, it's poisoned. Can't trick me! I'll just download it again... oh no wait?! After N hours and a full MD5 hash I keep getting an invalid file... it's as if these BAD pieces were spread everywhere like POISON!!! Hence the term poisoning.

Yeah, I know the complete file is shiat but it's too late and everyone keeps spreading the shiat!

  16. Re:Good Luck Poisoning Torrents on Finnish Firm Claims Fake P2P Hash Technology · · Score: 1

This won't be a problem at all. If you inject a single incorrect block, it will not be detected until the file is completely downloaded (assuming that it disrupts the hash of the entire file.) When it is detected, the client will have to go through the trouble of trying to find which block was corrupted - which can be troublesome as the bad block was already transferred to other downloading peers which inturn are passing the bad block as legit.

You can poison a piece as you stated, however a piece isn't shared as it comes in, you only share a piece once you receive the entire thing (ie all blocks) and have confirmed the hash OF THE PIECE (the hash of the entire file is done as a double check at the end).

Therefore you can waste someones time by injecting poisoned blocks but since that pieces hash won't check out it won't get propogated to anyone else.

In addition anyone who sends blocks which ultimately result in a BAD piece... get the boot!

  17. Good Luck Poisoning Torrents on Finnish Firm Claims Fake P2P Hash Technology · · Score: 2, Informative

I've already looked into poisoning Torrents: 1) There is a hash on the entire file (simple enough) 2) The data shared from a torrent is broken up into pieces. Contributors can only send whole pieces. (ie many people contribute to the entire file you're downloading but only 1 person contributes to a given piece). AND EACH PIECE IS HASHED. Take a look at the .torrent for yourself. The .torrent contains the hash of every piece. So not only would you have to make a file of the SAME SIZE with the SAME HASH, but every 1MB (for example) would also need to have the SAME HASH. Not only that but if you inject enough bad pieces you get booted (and yes this can be tracked, becuase as I stated before pieces come from a single individual).
