Keep in mind that the wind turbines at the Altamont Pass site are 20 years old and smaller than the current generation of large wind turbines; that means they spin a lot faster, and thus give the birds less time to get out of the way. Modern turbines spin a lot slower and are situated higher off the ground, giving them much less of an impact on the local wildlife population.
Not to mention the fact that hundreds of millions of birds are killed each year through collisions with glass windows, vehicles, guy wires, and so forth.
But don't take my word for it, check out this article which goes over the statistics, with references. Or, Google for yourself.
It was the demonstration video that made my jaw drop.
Hmm, now why am I suspicious of a link to a video called "smoothteddy.avi"? Oh yeah, because this is Slashdot.

People who want to listen to the news or weather?
Oh man, you are so behind the times. I ripped all my news and weather reports to mp3's a long time ago. Now I can listen to peace treaties or car bombings, sunny weather or rain, depending on my mood on any given day! It's great!
You don't get it. You are still in a pretend world where atoms go where you want because your computer program directs them to go there. You assume there is a way a robotic manipulator arm can do that in a vacuum, and somehow we will work out a way to have this whole thing actually be able to make another copy of itself.
Wow. If I talked that way to my corporate overlords I'd be kicked to the curb. Maybe I should have been a scientist!
I'd happily move to a new format of music where I could carry something like a pack of gum filled with "sticks" of music and pop one into a tiny player even smaller than that of the iPod....
That's a great idea. Tell me more about these so-called "Memory Sticks" of which you speak.
People, listen to me! We must abandon our research on this E-bomb, and focus our efforts on preventing our nation's enemies from being the first to master the next new form of destructive weaponry. For truly it will be a sad day indeed if the terrorists gain the ability to drop the F-bomb.
Even if these numbers are too large, this still makes you think about how inefficient our cars are.
I agree that regular gas-powered cars could be made more efficient, but don't the numbers above point more towards the "inefficiency" of the prehistoric plants --> crude oil deposits process?
While on the subject, is anybody still running old DOS programs in a DOS box on a Windows machine because your company is too poor/cheap to upgrade or doesn't want to bother with any free alternatives?
Oh sure, you'll think you're all smart, saving money by making your own mortar... until your bricks stop sticking together and your fancy new house falls apart!
(who needs to RTFA when misreading the article subject is more fun?)
Aimed at programmers who don't know much about user interface design and think it is something to fear
I've always found it to be somewhat the reverse: many programmers, most particularly those involved in the open source community, seem to view user interface design as something that enables them to fill the user with fear.
Or at least that's how it seems based on using any number of free apps with terrible GUIs. Maybe there is a UI design guide for sadists too.
Ladies and gentlemen of the audience, you are cordially invited to supply your own joke here.
Plus, you gotta love a name like Pimp 100.
"Dude... what if, like... our whole universe... is just one tiny atom... in the toenail of some giant dude?"
"Woah, dude."

You mean, they will be ubiquitous and annoying? Welcome to the future, my friend!

I wonder what Garmin will have to say about Nintendo ripping off the name of their existing product...

I mod this post "-1, Cuckoo".
What is this, Subliminal Cowboy Reference Day on Slashdot?
So, could you edit your CSS configuration through a webpage that uses CSS?
Well, more like "keeping Moore's Law a self-fulfilling prediction for yet another generation of processors". ;)
Luckily, there will be no such requirement to use proper spelling when submitting /. stories...

Curse those wily Dutchmen and their Nutricia Chocomel-flavored Tang!
FCC sources have also revealed a last-minute amendment to the proposed ruling which would require all HDTV broadcasts to comply with RFC3514.
How many images will there be once they finish the rest of the alphabet?
Oh, I see you've been to my office, haven't you?

Really? I've always found that it gums up the chain.
