its a simple concept. it requires a bank that the funds are drawn on and a bank you have brought the check to. they may or may not be the same bank (in most cases, they wont be). if both banks let the transaction happen without a signature, the check was just cashed.
if your bank complains, you have to get the check signed. if the bank the funds are drawn on complains, you have to get the check signed. if nobody complains, you do NOT have to get the check signed.
in the beginning, as an oper i had to deal with consistent squit wars between other opers (1987-90).
i didnt believe the community respected people then and i still dont see them respecting people now. however, i remember how useful irc was during the invasion of kuwait and the subsequent scud attacks on israel. this was the golden age of irc where real users reported in real time to the world as a whole.
it was the anarchy of irc that made this possible.
in the end, you have to take the good with the bad. dealing with disrespectful people is what it costs to use irc.
right now, dvd's are still considered to be the realm of the 'techophile' (those that cannot live without crystal clear sound and picture or that new gadget). divx died because it was a pay to play system. those low prices are incentive to drive the market. software drives the hardware market and dvd technology is no different. the more titles to be selected from, the more likely people will invest in a player.
will prices be jacked up later? probably but not by much. when the software dries up, so does the hardware. there is always a nextstep. i imagine that next step to be full feedback VR. if today's dvd technology wants to remain marketable the way vhs has, it will need to keep those prices down.

big boy sues little start-up for sole purpose of tying up as much working capital before little start-up can be a real threat.
if little start-up goes out of business or becomes financially shakey enough to be bought up big boy still wins.
its about DRIVING.
when you have a cell phone in your hand, you have at MOST one hand on the wheel and are generally splitting your concentration between paying attention to what you are doing on the road and what you are conversing about.
if the phone call comes, pull into the breakdown lane or park it.
i have personally witnessed 3 accidents caused by cell phone users. either drive or get off the road.
1) a computer only does what it is programmed to do. if it is programmed to react to something that would push your buttons, would you be as non-chalant about the invasion?
2) if you are under the impression that snooping into JQP's email is going to stop criminal activity, i guess you also support gun legislation, the death penalty and '3 strikes-you're out'.

The concept is sound, and remember in space you have perpetual motion, you only need the sail and some sunlight to start you off, then your flying and you can litterally "surf" on the orbits created by celestial bodies so as to remain in motion.
um. space does have mass and gravity. therefore, it is by no means perpetual motion.
why on earth would you use ping for performance monitoring? imap packets can be reprioritized or dumped entiredly so what real data can you expect to get?
only data you can honestly get is: machine xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is alive and responds to pings.
you need to ask yourself one critical question before taking the dsl plunge... can i live with being down for a week or more if something major goes wrong?
if not, dsl is not for you. if you need responsive support then you need to shell out the bucks for a frame relay or better solution.
there are dsl companies and then there are dsl companies. now, by no means, is any dsl company going to be aces in every issue on every day. this is a new technology and we happy few (depending on your prespective) are the beta testers. it took a good 3 months of investigation before i chose my dsl provider. it was not flashcom. it was not bellatlantic. on customer service issues alone these two stink up a storm. i definately recommend a visit to DSL reports before you even consider signing up. my basic view of bell atlantic is that they are using their monopoly at the CO (central office) level to leverage their own technology. nothing that can be proven but the many complaints i hear about bell atlantic messing something up (missing appts, using your line for someone else, etc.) seem mighty convenient for them.
the real fiscal point is:
why the heck are you playing games on the tax-payer's dime?

if so, does judge kaplan own stock in any of the plaintiffs?

and after the ice melts, it goes where?
(you need to remove the melt from the hole you just dug, ok?)
and what happens when the heat source is no longer applied to it?
(hint: it refreezes)
any probe is going to get crushed long before it gets to through the ice.
well, we now have the cover animal for the o'reilly book. :)
