Ah, ok...so if we don't USE our right to free speech, the powers that be will allow us to keep it, and we will all feel all warm and fuzzy just knowing we have it. The fact is, rights are inherent, not given by the government. If they cease to protect our rights and start clamping down on them, they have broken the social contract and no longer represent us. We will get whatever form of government that we deserve for our passivity.
hi,
just so you know, there are plenty of black and asian actors out there who would love to have work in a scifi or fantasy film who won't get it because they always make these kind of changes. it isn't that they aren't available, it's that all the parts are given preferentially to white actors even when there is no reason for it. it hurts them, it hurts scifi, and it is definitly racist of the movie industry to do this. like changing juan rico to john d. rico in starship troopers, and going with the creepy aryan look. everyone in that book is pretty much black, asian or hispanic as well.
The ACLU doesn't have the funds to take on every case, this group is here to help comic book creators and retailers with their legal fees when they have to defend themselves in court.
Superman and Jughead don't need it, the artists, writers, and publishers of comics do, as do comic book retailers. You can read up on the cases that they have taken on and make up your own mind. They are defending the First Amendment, why would that make anyone an idiot?
That would be Vega. He is very cool in the animated version, and the only halfway passable character in the live action. The other casting jobs were puzzling, at best.
The Exorcism scene really bothered me too. It just doesn't seem right. It is like Galadriel's bit in FotR where she suddenly turns green. I thought that was totally uncalled for and watching it makes me cringe. She could have conveyed it much better by her tone of voice I think.
The worst change in TTT in my opinion is the scene where Aragorn falls off the cliff and takes forever riding back to tell everyone that the orcs are coming. It isn't like that wasn't the reason they were headed to Helm's Deep or anything. Since in the book they all got there together just fine, it seemed really really pointless. Whenever I hear people say something was left out because they didn't have time I wonder what scenes in particular were cut out so everyone could be astonished that one of the main characters was't killed off camera, then watch him take forever riding to rejoin the group when he could've just been there in the first place.
Yeah, can't ignore the shonen/shojo dynamic when you are talking about this at all.
There is plenty of male objectification in shojo series, something which you don't see much of in American stuff. Main reason there are so many female otaku in the west, and Marvel and DC can't figure out where they came from and why they aren't buying their stuff. It's very interesting.
Miyazaki definitly intentionaly writes strong female characters because he enjoys them, and a lot of other creators do too. Kind of hard to compare the movie studios to the companies putting out series for television though. They have totally different demands to fulfill.
Exactly, I don't know why people always try to say this whenever the anime topic comes up, especially on a page entitled 'News for Nerds'.
Would any of the Japanese speakers in this thread care to start a discussion about the use of 'Computer Otaku' in this article?

It's easy to claim it was a hate crime. But there really is a definition. It is not so nebulous as white guy shots black guy.Often motivation is crystal clear. A lynching is not a crime of passion. And killing a black man for looking at a white woman sure sounds like a hate crime to me.
How about a woman with a gun versus a rapist with a gun? Just because you have a gun doesn't mean you will have the opportunity to get it out when you get into one of these situations. Not that I have a problem with the idea of a woman blowing the brains out of a wannabe rapist, that sounds like a pretty good idea. But, arguing from the most emotional standpoint doesn't really help the debate.
Gee dude, what about the bisexuals, do you just through all the bi men and women together in a fifth barracks? I bet that'd be the fun barracks though...
Man, everyone mentions the techy toilets, but where I am at the squat toilets are by far more common. You can find Western style and those fancy ones, occasionaly, but you don't count on it.
Not only Dizzy (boy, that was weird), but changing JUAN D. Rico from a Phillipino to a blond white guy named John. They really shouldn't have whitewashed the story, it took a lot away from it. Would've been the most multiethnic scifi ever if the racial composition was true to the book.
They should've also left the pilots with shaved heads IMO, that would've caused a buzz.
Yeah, it could benefit from a lot more light saber duels and a lot less attempts at romance scenes.I am pretty sure my S.O. will be getting the dvd set so I'll just have to deal.
I think CS people will just evolve very powerful thumbs. I've been getting pretty good at entering messages on my cell phone that way since I got one that does emails. But yeah, I probably wouldn't buy such a tiny laptop.
Yeah, the 'romance' scenes between Anakin and Amidala were so cringingly bad. Romping in a field of flowers, the scene in front of the fireplace...some forbidden romance. Ugh, wish that whole bit had just been left out...
that is not true, japan calls american comics amekomi, and they are a very niche interest.
My point is that if you refuse to use it you have lost it already, regardless of what you think.

jackson could do a great job on the ice wind dale trilogy, or the dark elf trilogy. good idea, let's start a petition!

That really needed to be said.
Hot cans from vending machines, that is the best thing in the world. I am going to miss those...
That would be downright Shakespearean...if LOTR was a comedy.

And how many loyalists were slaughtered during the American Revolution? I think this could go on forever.

Architects have little future use? Whoa...

Oh god, I'd forgotten the sand line. I don't think I could sit through that movie a second time.
