Does anybody know any method I can use to inexpensively buy an iPhone from Europe?
Ebay is filled with overpriced auctions, by people trying to monetize their iPhone unlocking skills. I just want one brand new phone, at Apple store price.
I've also been checking mail forwarding companies like http://www.myus.com/ and http://www.usabox.com/ but they all require you to set up an expensive account that does not pay out for just one gadget.
Does anybody know any other company that does cheap one-time packet forwarding from USA to Europe? Any other hint?
Well, call me classic, but I find the old theme pleasing to the eye. The Windows XP theme is not bad, but it is more space consuming.
Anyway, I don't expect the Firefox team to do miracles, but at least it should look consistent: the tabs in Firefox 2b2 running on the old theme look copy-pasted from the new theme.
Cheers.
I'm using Win XP with the Windows Classic theme (rather than XP one), and Firefox 1.5 looks as beautiful as ever, but Firefox 2b2 looks horrible.
It looks good on the XP theme, but a *lot* of work should be done for the classic one.
They also added "Undo Close Tab", which is nice, but it is only accessible through the right button menu. I want a mouse shortcut for this too. With the old "undoclosetab" extension I used to click the middle button on an empty space of the tab bar (or in the global 'x' button) to open the last closed tab.
Gaim, while works great and has many features, is horribly ugly on Windows XP, with the new appearance also, but specially so with the classic Windows 2000 visual style. This ugliness makes me feel bad when using it, feeling that I don't get when I use Skype and/or Google Talk, both with [IMO] great interfaces (but these two programs are completely useless outside their small niches). Trillian and Miranda interfazes do not feel completely right either, but they do not feel as bad as Gaim. MSN interfaze is so-so also, but again better than Gaim, except for the really annoying advertisements it shows.
While Gaim running on Gnome 2.12 looks considerably better than in Windows, I still think that the look and feel of all its windows and option dialogs is way suboptimal. I am not an interfaze designer, and I have not stopped to think what exactly makes me feel that an interfaze is bad or good, so I do not know how to improve Gaim's one specifically.
For the shake of contrast, Firefox would be an example that does not have this problem, as the interfaze is delightful both in Windows XP and in Gnome.
Parker Lewis Can't Lose was a masterpiece of a series, when aired it way ahead of its a time, and it was heavily underrated. I would almost kill to get it published on DVD.
Also, let me add this to yout list:
- Complete seasons 1 and 2 of Get a Life (the available DVDs only have a few 'best' episodes).
Exeem opensource alternative: http://kenosis.sourceforge.net/. Probably needs more work, more recognition and a slightly nicer website (well, and a license, it does not seem to have one).
If I make some useful piece of software in my spare time, I would not care that some John Doe would profit from it, or even that companies like Google would profit from it; but I wouldn't stand companies like Microsoft, Kazaa or Exeem earning money from it. So it has to be everyone or no one (that is, the GPL).
Yes, I know I have biased prejuices against (most) corporations, but when I, for example, visit the websites of the three companies I named, a voice in my head tells me: these companies don't do things with good heart, they only do things for the shake of winning money, and don't care about the happyness of the user.
On the other hands I perceive the Mozilla Foundation (not profiting) or Google (profiting) as two companies that truly try to offer useful things and care about the user.
I know everybody has to work for a living, but if nobody would do things for the shake of doing useful things, or for the shake of research, open source software would not exist at all.
My philosophy is, do something because you truly think it is useful for people, profiting from it or not, but not make something just for profit. That is why I lobby for the GPL, against software patents, etc.
"If I can't or didn't make money off it, neither can you."
Probably many people think this, but I hope you saw how my view is different from this.
Now I would not be completely sure that eXeem did not 'borrow' code from Azureus or libtorrent, both having the GPL (I think BitComent sourcecode is not available).
If only Bram Cohen would had licensed the original bittorrent under the GPL (rather than the MITL), people would not be able to profit so easily from his work.
Granted, the trackerless protocol surely took some work, but the base BT protocol (and its implementation) was the revolutionary thing.
I hate companies providing adware software like Kazaa or Exeem, that promise you heaven on earth, and actually offer subpar programs, that would have much more quality as an opensource project (see eDonkey vs eMule).
Couldn't this be a movement aimed to deter anti software patents activist in Europe? Many if not most of these activist are free software advocates too.
If you force people to do something, there is a much higher probability that they will resist doing it with all their forces.
It is much better to show them how useful and stable free software can be, and explain them why sleazy monopoly practices by big corporations are bad for them, and how that can be avoided if everybody uses open source software.
The following (oversimplified) scenario:
'Day1: Let me install you this great open source applications, which also are available in Linux.
Day7: I have this Knoppix Live CD, which can not damage your NTFS partition even if you play with it, do you want to give it a whirl?
Day14: Do you want me to completely delete Windows and install Linux for you?'
is much better than this other (oversimplified too) scenario:
'Open source applications are high quality: very useful and stable; and you don't support big evil monopolies by using them, but you can't try them because the stubborn open source gurus won't let you unless you install Linux.'
I actually said the same thing that you are stating in your post:
'He's just afraid to die, but unlike the rest of us who are atheists, he lies to himself about his own mortality.' --> 'The rest of us who are atheists do not lie to ourselves about our own mortality' --> 'Atheists do not deny the mortality of humans.'
Yeah, corporations should defend their trademarks, but what about when you politely ask if you can do a non comercial spinoff based on their property and they think: "Bah, kids" not even telling you "Yes, go ahead" or "No, that would piss us off", only later to send you a cease and desist letter.
I am a bit skeptic about this kind of fan games (although Maniac Mansion Deluxe was really impressive), but when I saw the trailer I was really stunned. Give it a try!
It is a shame Square (and all big corporations really) is so annoying with a non comercial project that would even give a boost to Chrono series popularity and pave the way for a third official game in the series.
I am all for closing people profiting from other's trademarks, but when hardcore fans do a game/hack/mod/expansion just for the pleasure of doing it without gaining a penny... I don't understand why companys force them to cancel these projetcs.
This subject was covered a while ago in this ask slashdot. I remember because I bought my charger just after it being published.
My advice is that you just buy whichever one that *clearly* states that is microchip (that is deltaV) controled rather than stopped by timer. Mine is a Hama and it works well.
For the batteries, check this comparison. To sum it up, the more mAh the better, brands are usually not that important.
Is it just me or the download manager feels clunky? On top of that it is a resource hog.
I wish there was an option for reverting to.7 type downloads (a separate window for each download) until the DM is less resource intensive and more visually appealing.
Maybe the problem is that I'm used to GetRight as a download manager (a comercial one, one of the best in my opinion) and I don't stand anything worse. Check it out here: www.getright.com
It were the stupid market people who changed the title. Shame on them, always changing covers, titles or, even worse, content, to make games "more suitable" for the western market.
Yeah, MI3 is actually pretty good (although MI2 remains my favourite).
But, remember the *WEIRD* ending of MI2? (I won't spoil it here)
Ron Gilbert said he had it all thought and that he would explain it in the sequel. I just wanted to know what was all that about...:)
I sometimes buy second hand games, but I do not do so because they are cheap, I buy them because they are discontinued and they can't be found new!
I understand that second hand market of *new* games can hurt a bit developers, but you can't ban it altogether (like they are trying to do in Japan) because that way you scren game collectors who are looking for limited editions, non-platinum editions or just old games.

Globalized world my ass.

Yeah, but they let the concept cool for a while and now we're back with it at the heat of innovation.

I wonder how common that is.

Total Commander is a pretty good 'Midnight Commander'-like file manager for Windows.
In 2002 Microsoft 'kindly' requested that they chose another name, after 9 years of being called Windows Commander.
Excuse my ignorance, but how are micropayments relateds to spam (or to the end of it)?
Try this game too: http://hp.vector.co.jp/authors/VA022293/FreeSoft/I kachan.html
It's similar to Doukutsu Monogatari, with a very fun gravity based gameplay, you can only rotate and propel yourself.
It would be great if they translated this too.
You made a good point.

The parent makes a very good point.

In Japan, the game was called Metal Gear Ghost Babel, as can be seen here:
