Still have problems with that idea... How many young highschool kids would think its cool and funny to sit on a hill top are a building top and keep signaling the lights red creating traffic jams. Price of these doesn't matter as car breakins are common so eventually a kid would get ahold of one and weak havoc.
Ok IP v4 is allready out of address space and Phonenumber space is less than the adress space of IPv4... Should I go on?
I have no clue why someone would think that using a 68 digit phone number to get to a web url that is only 14 easy to remember chars long would be a good thing:) After all IPv6 should be here soon and it has About 340,282,366,920,938,463,463,374,607,431,768,211,45 6 addresses...
For anything new to be accepted and widely used... It needs to be atleast as convient as what is currently inplace... ipv6 is "just around the corner" so I think haveing to remember a 39 digit phone number doesn't meet.
Also if on a lucky night at the bar i find a woman drink enough to give me her phone number:) I would have to remember over 3 times the digit to her phone number because as usual i will undoubtly loose the piece of paper she worte it on or spill a drink on it or some other disaster.
But what would be a ground breaking idea is.. PNS... linda like DNS but for phone numbers instead of domain names... But then verisign would redirect me if that phone number wasn't registered to someone lonely enough to pay them money to have people call them cause they think thats what I want:)
ps I know they have something similiar to DNS for phones.. its called Directory assistance:)
Where does he get this statistic? Hard to imagine since P2P Traffic on highspeed networks its been reported to take up as much as 60% of traffic pipes... While this number is a bit large... Its easy to forsee it being way higher than 1%.
He also makes mention of the people currently "specify its evolution" need to understand that its much broader but on a eariler note he confines dns traffic down to HHTP based only as he deems the rest of the traffic miniscule and irrelivant..
It sounds like this was a mere obersvation in relation to another study. They make no mention of the Actual context of the study this was observed in.
We have no clue if the context of the study this observation was made was something like "a Study of Alien Abducties".. In which case Aliens could be making genetic manipulations to Tall people in order to pave the way for Alien Colonization:)
He makes quite a few remarks that clearly show he is disillusioned.
"We have to. We invented personal computing."
Yeah right... It was alot more along the lines of the silicon valley based computer users group.. They layed all the ground work for personal computing... MS inventing it? Thats a huge stretch.
Microsoft invested over $100 million to refocus on building products that strive to be secure by design, by default and by deployment.
Where is this secruity? We haven't seen any yet.. secure by design? I thought it was obsecuirty as they have shown and commented... Just a few days ago there was a comment made about people announcing exploits to "Shut-up". Not to mention... "Secure by default" most defaults are insecure because they are in a predictable state.. The only truely secure default is unplugged hardware... You buy it unplugged so there for its in a default state and extreamly secure:)
Hooyeah for you... There are so very few people out there that realize that teh unlicenced spectrum band isn't realiable so all 802.11x are not a reliable means of transport. People keep wanting to expand 802.11x into a cheap MAN network when the technology isn't meant for anything past LAN.
I doubt that... When 95 was released it was a rush job to get to the market to take advantage of a "new" 32 bit architecture..
Basically OS2 was starting to take over the desktops and MS had seen this possibility from thier work on OS2 and was developing thier own product to compete. OS2 was really starting to gain functionality gain and Windows 3.1 pailed in compairson and it was easy to show end consumers that OS2 could most any 3.11 app plus have stability and open the door to the next generation of Apps supporting 32bit architecture.
MS Had to move fast and release win95 before it was really ready to keep thier domination of the desktop market in the PC world.
IBM's marketing machine wasn't up-to-snuff to compete and MS's partnership programs (that were demonstarted as anti-competitive in the Anti-trust trial) kept OS2 at bay long enough for win95 and the MS marketing machine to button up the market and continue to keep comitetion from invading thier monopoly.
After all win98 is just a stable and completed release of win95. If you don't think so then why are there 3 very diffrent versions of win95? (They were playing catch up for the most part but not entirely)
Its adds up to be substancial ammounts just to give the impression of more dataspace. Its all Marketing manipulating numbers to best suit thier needs.
Harddrives haven't allways been calculated in this manner.. It was when there was a great demand for larger storage devices and redefining the size of a megabyte and gigabyte to inflate the public impression of what they were getting. Which in itself was a misrepresentation of the product they provide.
I have seen many manipulations on how numbers are presented on harddrives including unformatted capasity to get the biggest numbers possible to display to would be customers.
It makes the most sence to utilize a base 2 convention when relating to storage media that relates to computers as this is how a computer utilizes storage media.
Guess that would mean that MS wouldn't be able to sell any of thier OS's since IE is actually part of the OS as microsoft insists. Hmm... Guess that would mean all stores that have a preinstalled PC's sitting on the shelves would not be able to sell them as well.
I would actually like to see this injunction be put inplace just to put MS in its place about forcing software on its end users reguardless if they want the software or not.
On another note something needs to be done about Patents remaining in limbo untill somone decides its time to make money off of it since its well in major distribution.
Do not make consent a condition for supplying a product or a service, unless the information requested is required to fulfil an explicitly specified and legitimate purpose.
Since this information can be used in many additional ways that I may belive not to be in my best interest I would object to allowing them to document this personal information of mine and they would be in violation to try to require this information of me.
This is actually against canadian law to do. We have a ACT that protects all personal information about us canadians... Its called the PIPEDA act.. Its quite new yet and it becomes law Jan 1 2004. Basically it more or less states that a company is more or less unable to legaly share any personal information with anyone unless the have your explicit permission to do so. I doubt they are aware of ACT and will be unable to implement this after the ACT becomes active.
Once an IT manager was trying to convince me that I should not use a contractor to to switch DC power plants for our Phone switch... That was pretty funny when I said "NO!". He got a confused look on his face and asked why. I pointed out that it is our ONLY PBX system that the business relys on and if something did happen I would not want it to be me... I asked him if wanted to do it because I would be more than happy to arrange everything else about the outtage and be there to do everything else But the power.
Once I pointed out how mission critical the PBX was and offered to let him do the work he understood completely why I didn't want to do it and verified the name of the contract company so he could ensure thier insurance was paid up to an acceptable level:)
As for being on a tight budget... That is non-sense... What kinda of budget would you have after a complete loss of power to all the IT equipment.. That should be the issue being addressed... This is not a issue that can be done on a tight budget... When a electrician does show up.. make sure he is balancing loads evenly across your power systems as best possible and make notes so when you do add new equipment you have an idea of where to add it onto your power system to keep loads even and backed up properly.
Issues like this or commonly looked at in the wrong light and sure budgets are tight.. but this is not about how much money is to be spent to fix this.. How much money will be saved by getting the job done properly.. if you have a complete outage how much money/hour will be lost.. not to mention how much equipment will end up getting burnt as well.. You have described a situation that sounds to me to be very critical and should be dealt with swiftly and Professionally..
But just don't let an eletrician run loose.. watch and follow what he is doing and document how he is wiring everything up.. copy down teh amp draw of everything and document it.. Power management is probably one of the most over looked mission critical components of a server/data center. There is no money to be lost in dealing with this problem instead of trying to patch it up, only money saved.
This is a great time to do a Auid on your power systems and rebalance your UPS and begin a power management program. Also audit Temp and Humidity as well.. These 3 components will greatly extend the life of equipment and drastically reduce equipment failures and in doing so lower support cost..
So what does this mean in the long run?
1)A Variant will be out next week to target the
new domain? (Yet another Short term solution
for a long term problem)
Or
2)Will MS Follow thier practice of security
through obsecurity and not release the new domain
name (to the public or the clients that need to
know the domain to connect to it:))
Even though its 10 years old... It will run a outlandish ammount of software... MS talks about all this innovation.. Yet thier 10 year old OS will run most Proggies on the market today? What does that say about innovation on MS's part..
But what is really needed once its slimmed down is a Dependancy list for running proggies:) So when we wanna start running apps we can watch the bloat go:)
Everyone has Diffrernt gripes and diffrent ideas of what needs to be done to solve thier problems... thats one of MS's failings... Its much easier to modify your OS when you have the source and full rights to modify it... Instead of a Bloated 200+ meg OS that has only the most basic of basic services included in it. If you strip down Linux and use a small compareable GUI you would be down to a 10th its size. whats the rest there for? Obscuirty for thier security.
I'll watch a ad that looks funny once.. maybe twice... but then 99% of commercials that i find funny loose thier Haha value after 2-3 viewings.. Ever remember Ad Critic before it became a subscription service? Dunno what the free account is like there now... but if it takes moe than 30 seconds to fill in bogus info about me to get a free subscription or see if they offer such a thing then I am outta there...
But here you had a Website where the Core content was commercials.. This thier biggest problem was bandwidth... But they should have Tweaked some ears as that site used to be highly popular.. I used to visit it quite a bit in my spare time to see what new funny commercials are out that I haven't seen yet cause my social life was cutting too much into Boob Tube time.
Really wonder what some of the advert execs think though... pretty much everyone gets up to get a drink/goto the bathroom/make a quick few phone calls/Check to see how supper is cooking.. There is a Million things people do during commercial breaks... (ooops! I forgot to add.. The nice litle 30 second skip button or the good ole fast forward are pretty big commercial break past-times too)...
But I would guesstimate that recording stats of who is skipping what commercials would need to be removing vital detail that they would need to collect... Do they know if your home alone or with company.. what kinda company... Are you skipping the commercial cause its a chick commercial and your a guy.. Blah Blah Blah.. Millions of Good reasons why you would want to skip a commrcial... But that detail will get lost and suddenly we will have a new generation of commercials that are still trying to be general and broad for everyone but its based on stats lacking proper detail. (everyone commercial will have a fgamilt with 2.4 kids in it. Blah Blah Blah)... Gimmie a Break... Commercials need to be as interesting as the show thier spot appears in...
LOL... Hehe... Well.. It would be nice to have a system to suppliment City power.. Perpetual is really non-exsistant there is a oposing force for everything so you will allways loose energy.
Like mentioned earlier that will not likely Increase the ammount of carpools significantly to change the traffic situation... Insituting higher costs for Single occupant commuters and after wages and maintence are paid for by these higher costs use the left over money to subsidize carpooling would be much more efficient way to reduce traffic. Mind ya this would probably go no-where cause it would make too much sence to use monies from an abusive group to give gains to a conservitive group.
If its not gonna make headlines then they are busy looking for Terrorists. Its pretty pathetic that the Media needs to really be involved to get Law Enforcement done.
