    To make HOMM3 work, you will most likely need to install proprietary drivers for your video card. HOMM3 requires 3d acceleration to work correctly. While open source graphic drivers will provide 2d acceleration, 3d acceleration is not provided for most cards (ati and nvidia for example).

    The article is discussing UNIX/Linux vs Windows security for an *average user*. Such a user will run Windows as an administrator because it's the default behavior. Under UNIX/Linux, the default behavior is to run as a normal user without administrator privilege. Setting up limited Windows accounts is so complicated, a large fraction of users are not using them.

    There is another point the author of the article is missing. Imagine the desktop computer is used by 3 different persons, each one having its own account. Under Windows, a virus could wipe everyone personnal files plus the operating system. Under UNIX/Linux, only the personnal files of the negligent account are lost.

    It looks like only the US English server is on maintenance. If you know another language than English, which is mandatory nowadays, you can explore Google Analytics and give it a try.

    The promise of a well designed graphic card which is thightly integrated into the kernel is the reason why I am ready to put money on this project. A lot of people are paying high price to get a few more FPS on their favorite games. I feel paying a high price for an openly designed product is more important.

    Mandrake is a company from France. They put a lot of efforts to document and translate Linux applications in french for their own market. I think their acquisition of Conectiva follows the same logic. Portuguese speaking people should be pleased by the announcement since it means more applications will be available in their own language.

    I'm from Quebec and my primary language is French. I do not use Mandrake Linux but I feel their implication in the Linux movement improved my own experience. Vive Mandrake!

    Before the RHEL/Fedora split, I was running Red Hat 9 on my server and desktops. I also purchased one subscription to the Red Hat Network for my server. When they told us there was a split coming down the road, I take a look at my options. Fedora looked to risky because it was bleeding edge and Red Hat is not supporting it directly. I wanted to go with RHEL but the price was too high. For some time, I tought I was nailed.

    But then, I learn about RHEL respin projects. Many were available (CentOS, TaoLinux, WhiteBox Linux, etc) and they were free. After looking at those projects, I chose TaoLinux and I'm very glad with my decision. The maintainer for this project, David Parsley, is commited and serious.

    Did I stayed loyal to Red Hat? Yes, I did. But I'm no longer an official customer of Red Hat.

    One should not forget that the forked team is working with a codebase developped by the original team. If they feel right about working with someone else code, why should the opposite be wrong?

    I think this is a great advantage of the GPL license: You can "steal" the source code of another project but, by doing so, you expose yourself to the same "threat".

    The optimal way of installing software on a Red Hat distribution requires the use of RPM packages. Since Red Hat did not released RPM and source RPM for Firefox/Thunderbird on their stable products (RHEL 3), it is up to the administrator to create them.

    The packages released for Fedora and RHEL 4 Beta may be used as a base, but they still require some tweaking to achieve the robustness of their Mozilla counterpart.

    I totally agree with you. If you have stereo equipment and a computer, plugin them is a wise decision. I did it when I bought my first computer. Since the two most expensive pieces of hardware I had at this time were my computer and my audio system, I thought buying computer speakers would be a mistake. Why buy such a piece of crap when you already have amp powered speakers? The next move I made in term of home multimedia, was to plug a computer, a stereo system and a television. The result is a evolving home theater system. Easy to use, even for my wife ...

    A friend of mine has bought a new PC lately. I convinced him to make it dual-boot Linux/WinXP on two separate hard disks. I helped his for the base installation then I let him do some experiments. Sadly, he jumped immediately to WinXP. He spent at least a week to install antivirus software, firewall and tweak the Windows Registry. Then, its WinXP hard drive broke so he had to reinstall Windows and repeat the same time-consumming process.

    Whenever I argue he should give Linux a try, he tells me Linux is too complicated. Damn, the Windows Registry is more cryptic than a Linux configuration file! And you can make a backup of these configuration files just in case you have a problem. I agree with you, Windows gets the "Get out of jail free" cards, not Linux.

    I recommand you Tao Linux. It's based on the source RPMS of RedHat Enterprise Linux 3.0. All security upgrades distributed by RedHat are recompiled and made available to the Tao Linux community. Yum is bundled with Tao Linux and is the default way of installing/updating software.

    David Parsley and Pasi Pirhonen are the main developpers of Tao Linux. They promised it will be supported as long as RedHat Enterprise Linux 3.0 (year 2008).

    I am a physicist. True, some of my peers are a little bit disconnected. However, most of us understand and recognize that our knowledge is limited. We learn this during our formation, when we face simple problems without having any clue about how to solve it.

    We learn how to elaborate solutions by trial and error. The south pole hack will teach those physicist a lesson and I hope they will find a more elegant solution to their security problem.

    Since RedHat still provides its source code for RHEL, there are some alternatives other than the cutting edge Fedora distribution: Tao Linux, CentOS-3 and White Box Entreprise Linux. These distributions are build from the source packages of RHEL 3 and are almost identical to RHEL except for some artwork and logos.

    For those who appreciate stability, reliability and long-term availability (4-5 years lifecycle), those distributions are made for you. Personnaly, I prefer Tao Linux because it has a rather large user base. The Tao logo looks great too!

    For sure, gaming needs will tend to increase the demand for high-end computers. However, with such high specs needed, the Longhorn adoption will be much slower than the transition Win 2000 -> Win XP that we have seen recently.
    If the Longhorn paradigm comes with serious disavantages like DRM, users will have the time to think about their needs. Do I really need a 3D desktop if I can't listen to my illegal MP3 collection on this system?

    My opinion is that Longhorn will not be an impulsive buy for most users as Win XP was. This could hurt seriously Microsoft marketing strategy.

    7. Putty - An efficient ssh client to communicate with your Linux boxes
    8. OpenOffice.org - Word processing
    9. Microsoft Office - Sometimes OpenOffice.org can't do the job...
    10. Adobe PhotoShop

    For Linux my choices are :

    1. Update your installation - yum, apt or up2date
    2. xmms-mp3 - Enable mp3 playback (freshrpms.net)
    3. mplayer - The best video player (mpg, avi, dvd) (freshrpms.net)
    4. perl-Video-DVDRip - Add a movie collection beside your music collection (freshrpms.net)
    5. CodeWeavers CrossOver Plugin - Enable Microsoft plugins in Mozilla
    6. Quicktime (via CrossOver Plugin)
    7. Windows media player (via CrossOver Plugin)
    8. Shockwave player (via CrossOver Plugin)
    9. CodeWeavers CrossOver Office - Run Windows application in Linux
    10. Microsoft Office (via CrossOver Office)

    You are right. The energy returned by the system needs to be converted in another form like electricity before we can use this process as an energy source. The efficiency of the conversion process is always lower than 100%.

    This is why the authors are now looking for applications which need a source of neutrons. Hence, they do not need to convert those in another form of energy.

    I installed W2K and the A/V program for him in the first place. After purchasing WinXP, he tried to upgrade its OS by himself. He underestimated the need of an A/V software and had no clue about firewalls. So he connected to the Internet unprotected and caught a worm quickly.

    My point is that installing Windows is no longer an easy task for an average user like my brother.

    The break-even point is defined as an operational state where the energy given to the system to maintain its reaction is equal to the energy produced by the same system.

    To ignite the fusion reaction described in this article, they have to expose the canister to pulses of neutrons and generate ultrasonic waves. Both processes require a total energy Ei. The energy returned by the system is in the form of neutron emission. Those neutrons have an energy Ef. The break-even point is reached when Ef = Ei.

    Yesterday, my brother called me because its newly installed Windows XP operating system was behaving mysteriously. After upgrading from Windows 2000 (which I installed for him), he connected to the Internet via a modem.

    At this point, everything was OK but a worm exploiting a vulnerability in Windows XP infected him at his first use of the Internet. Wow! This is a slam in the face for an average user!

    He brought his computer to my home. Since there was no easy solution for his problem, I had to format its hard drive and restart the installation. This morning, I started the update process which is time consuming - you need to be in front of the computer to update it.

    My opinion is that Linux is ready for the desktop due to the lack of security of Microsoft products.
