Seeing as Google has been warn of poisoning before and refuses action, or that Google was long warned about proxy hacking and refused action, I'm not about to pat them on their back for not actually fixing their stuff and instead just trying trying to clean up the major incidents after a couple of days. If Microsoft acted like that, people would go into hysterics, let alone patting them on the back. And this comes from someone who loves Google and hates Microsoft.
This is Because many CS students are not systems people and are often clueless about computers. In class I would be the one telling people how to do things with their computer. In the real world I deal with programmers who can't figure out simple OS tasks. This isn't necessarily bad, they have computer CS skills that boggle me, which is why I failed out of CS. It's just sad my white suburban snobbery prevented me from getting a tech degree is computer systems, which is were my talents lie.
CS shouldn't be about what platform you a programming on. If you are only willing to learn how to program on Visual Studio, you are missing the point of CS. The point of CS is to teach you how to program on any computer, even the ones that haven't been imagined yet. Those students should shut up and learn what they are paying all too much to be taught. Then in their spare time they can play with whatever they want, which is a great thing to do to supplement your CS education.
seriously! The windows laptop automatically connects to the best unsecured "linksys" network without me asking. This is how Microsoft programed the thing.
I've heard it from people who sell lottery tickets, although if this is an implied threat or explicit threat, I don't know. I'd love to include a link, but Massachusetts still doesn't list the entire CMR online, it will mostly only sell you certain bits of it in printed form. I imagine 961 CMR is what you'd read or perhaps the contracts one would sign.
I think it's more like: gambling is bad, addictive and destroys society, unless the government is making money off of it, then it good and everyone should do it. With the amount Mass advertises the lottery to entice new people to play, I feel the state has lost all moral authority to decide what is bad or good for us (if they ever should have had that in the first place) Do you know that in Mass that if you sell lottery tickets, you are barred from ever suggesting to someone that they have spent too much money or perhaps should seek help?
I wonder if you could legally force them to pay you for those 6 months the contract was still in effect. You would still be working for them under contract, and thus perhaps still represent an employee obligation for them. And under federal law, if you are salaried, as long as you work for a half a work day, they have to pay you your full salary for that day.
My personal mission is to eradicate all unneeded earcandy. Although I still welcome our PulseAudio overlords, sound conflicts in Linux have still been one of those rough edges that's embarrassing for newbies to see.
I remember when I removed system read privilege to my home directory. I was still able to login, but it would no longer run my login scripts. Anyways, I still miss notes.
Actually Sun precompiled Java consistently causes processes to hang and I end up needed to kill -9 firefox. Now that I have the open source sun java compiled by Fedora the system is rock solid and haven't needed to kill -9 firefox once. I've had the same results with flash vs gnash. Besides being overly restricting, closed sourced software just tends to suck more.
We use CentOS because it's free. If their was no CentOS, we'd use Debian or something else. We describe it to our customers as a free community version of RedHat, some of our customers will then opt on their own to request we use the official RedHat and pay extra for it. If we did Debian, that would probably not happen.
Thank you, I've always hated the UI for Photoshop. I'm told it makes sense if you are a photographer, but I've never liked it personally. I thought Aldus Photostyler had a really good GUI. The GIMP has a pretty good GUI, and I find it easier to do things than in Photoshop.
Yes I agree.. I got repetitive strain from using a mouse. I switch the mouse to the other hand for a few days and it got better. I doubt CTS would have gone away so fast. It helps to keep your wrists straight so blood can blow to them and to give them breaks.
The FOSS OS world isn't going to take over the world at once. It's cool to see we are growing. 0.81% doesn't look impressive, but it's a large number of computer users. 6.61% for Mac is only going to help us. We still have 79.32% of XP users to eventually switch over to something, and these will be the people less wanting to go to Vista. Once XP becomes less of an option, they'll be more likely to look at Mac and Linux. MS will remain a juggernaut of course, but the first step is to make FOSS big enough to be an option.
If you want an OS for a box and to keep the source to yourself, then why wouldn't you use a BSD? What advantage do you get for using Linux and other code released under the GPL? Is it just corporate types who are looking to cheap out on development and know the Linux buzzword?
even GPL never makes any attempt to stop organizations The GPL isn't about stopping you do anything. It's a permissive license, it grants you rights to do things, not to take them away. This is the best definition of copyleft in my opinion: a license that gives your rights, not to take them away. What the GPL does is put obligations on the how, not restrict the can. Technically the BSD license also outs obligations on the how, just less so. The CC license might not be considered a true copyleft as it restricts the can. Restriction the use in commercial ventures is a copyright notion, not a copyleft.
from the web hosting my company, I've seen a sharp increase in people doing ASP.NET stuff, although it's often laughable uses. Generally.. people who run servers themsevlves use Apache, people who resell use IIS, at least these days. Apache could use a new killer app.
I hook it up to the computer and let it auto mount. If I need to do a full resync I delete the info on the usb drive, and drag my music onto drive. Usually I just drag the music to it and let it only add what is new. I manage my 30GB IAudio this way.
I agree that hardware runs better on Linux, plus Linux retains hardware support for older devices, that has been my experience also. The issue is the newest hardware has incomplete support are requires loops to be jumped through. Running Linux on bleeding edge computers can be pain if you don't take pains to make sure the right hardware comes with your computer, especially laptops.
The good news is that if you aren't running the latest games, you don't need the latest hardware. It's a far better idea to buy older computers and save a bundle and have the better hardware support. The good news is that progress is being made with hardware support. It's quite amazing to watch.
What are the numbers of people who install windows via CD VS people who install Linux via CD?
The main reason is that under Linux your hardware won't work as well, more internet stuff won't work, and you can't play your games like Evercrack and WoW. People who use Linux generally are either really care about freedom, or are computer hobbyists who like messing around with their computer. Average users often just get frustrated and move back to windows if they were curious enough to switch anyways.
I think Linux would be better off targeting the computer hobbyists rather than prematurely going after average users. We are prematurely slapping an easy to use GUI on top of a system that you need to know about in order to maintain, translation: we are giving people enough rope to hang themselves before they know how to use rope safely. Once Linux has most of the computer people using it, the casual user will follow. This is how it worked in the world of DOS vs Mac
We need to be proactive. Let's create a groklaw type service just for Microsoft Patents and start building prior art cases for any patent Free Software is potentially infringing on. They are gathering their troops, let's start gathering ours. See if they are as bold.

I think that's the general idea.

One day I'm going to upgrade my 386 from PC DOS 7, to FreeDOS. But as it's only current use is a door stop, it's not a high priority for me.

Fuss & O'Neil Technologies is a good service in CT.
