The latest media player requires WinXP in order to use all the features. Purchasing XP to use MP9 is hardly a "free upgrade."

and they both do extremely well
I agree they do, yet that is not the issue here. The issue is MS forcing us to use their products, being unable or at least extremely difficult to change the default program asociations if you want to use another product, and MS lying that they cannot be uninstalled. You can uninstall an entire Service Pack, yet MS wants us to believe that individual apps like MP and IE cannot be removed from their OS? Something doesn't add up here, but we've all known that for years.

Finally a definitive account of the Corel's shoddy history instead of the kneejerk "It's all Microsofts fault" reaction. Michael Cowpland is the reason Corel is where they are today. He was noting but a blowhard. Corel developed one good product (Draw) and everything else they acquired from other companies, usually knee-jerk reactions to jump on the latest bandwagon at the time . Remember "thin-clients?" Remember "Corel-Linux?"

Combine that with the fact that Corel couldn't market water in the middle of the desert and it's obvious that MS isn't the main reason why they are going down the drain.

Oh god, being caught between two "phonies" is so annoying. In my department one pseudo-manager phones her underlings every 20 minutes to talk about their work on the current project ("did you compile yet?", "did you change that variable name yet?","I think we should do it this way"), yet she sits in a cubicle 10 feet away from them and can easily stand up and have a conversation in a normal tone of voice. Luckily I sit away from them and don't hear them anymore, but a coworker of mine sits right in the middle and he hears the whole conversation in stereo-she asks a question, he answers, she replies. Ridiculous.

Meanwhile I sit beside a manager who's native language is French and if you've ever been to queerbec you know how boisterous they can get. His french buddy comes by a half dozen times a day and all I hear is "Pouvoir Boivoir Voulaiz Sucretz Viva bonjoir!" one decibel short of shouting for the next 20 minutes.

Then you got the ones who for some reason think that the office phone is not enough for them and have to leave their cell phones on so everyone can listen to their stupid customized ringer tootin the theme to the A-Team or something. At least take it with you or turn it off when you leave your desk.

Thank god for email! Unlike speaking or the phone, it doesn't make noise, other people's email doesn't distract you, you don't have to read it immediately, and you can ignore the little envelope icon until you are finished with your current task.

Companies crying about copying software was going on long before CD's came around. Piracy was talked about in the mid 80's about how much it was hurting software companies, then in the mid 90's there was a plethora of anti-piracy ads, and now it seems to be happening again. It seems to me that the software industry survived from this onslaught of "piracy"

The simple truth is that most people who use pirated software would not buy the software if they were forced to, and instead they would used their older versions or find cheaper or free alternatives. The company is not losing money in this case. The amount of $$ that the software industry claims to be losing from piracy is exaggerated by a magnitude or two or three.

"He must decide what side he's on"
"He is the only one who can save the world",""
    "Evil has a new name"

In the late 80's amateur astronomers were beginning to use CCD's and what was so amazing about that was that in a few seconds to a few minutes you could capture images that previously required many minutes to over an hour of exposure time with film. The resolution was not as good as film or the large professional telescopes, but now it was possible for the backyard amateur to capture images of very faint objects in no time without sitting hunched over your telescope guiding it as exposed the film. I also remember a big discussion in amatuer astronomy whether using CCD's was 'real astronomy' or not.
