imagine the possiblities... Guess this menas Google isn't going to take over the world afterall...
I recently switched from Windows to Linux and on my old windows system I have been using NeoTrace && NeoWatch for YEARS! Ironic that McAffee bough out NeoWorx a few years ago which gave them the right to, IMHO the best windows firewall and traceroute package available. Crying shame that they are also going to destory what was good software.

imagine how unproductive Microsoft would be without open source software -- I think the open source community should rise up against the devil of OS Developers and prove that Microsoft was out of good ideas when code was stolen from Apple all those years ago;)
[sarcasm] Ok this study is great... and incredibly accurate too... [/sarcasm]
These companies that were studied probably have rather large and very expensive IT departments... The people using the systems are mostly average and below computer users and use ONLY what they have been told to use by the IT department which has spend millions ensuring that their systems were running software that is stable enough for a production environment... (MS Wind + MS Office + MS Servers + MS Security + 1 or 2 specialized and highly developed apps)
My point is that for this test to me accurate run this same test on 1.5M slashdot users.... those numbers will rise dramatically... then average the two -- allow for a 3-5 point margin of error and viola! more accurate results...
On a side note I've found that Windows 98 is incredibly stable for weeks on end when run in VMWARE under LINUX;)
Actually many people use various unices for certain things - 3D (PIXAR), analyzing data (Psychology students) -- my roommate for example is computer illiterate - she is a masters of Psychology student and she analyzzes all of her data on a Unix platform - she will be switching to linux because it "just makes sense" to her. (good thing I'm around to help with the transition)
If I had a couple million lying around, I would fund a project that will make Linux more user Friendly. I would do this by following what a company has already accomplish with BSD (Apple anybody). You have a kernel that supports certain hardware. You have a graphics subsystem that handles MOST of the available commands. Next door to the graphics subsystem you have a CLI that allows normal commands to be executed. On top of that you have a totally customizeable user interface that's fast and clean. something like Aqua with the ability to turn off some of the fancy shit. I would want to base it on XFCE4:)
I would then build systems and ship them with my LINUX OS, cheaper than Apple, not m$, and simply put, better. I would also fund to port software to the new system. You would effectivly have the ability to run software based on the interface or you could install GNOME or KDE or whatever...
This still gives us geeks the ability to be geeks but it gives my 50 year old parents a system that is stable, tested, proven, fast, simple, and comes with everything they need: Email, Web Browser, Office Suite... you get the idea. It eliminates the confusion of Open Source while still providing the flexibility and configurability of LINUX --
man if only...
I'm also very serious, I'm open to donations, ideas, questions, comments, and whatnot.
If Macromedia would produce LINUX software - I can guarantee that there wouldn't be any competition - Linux would be the primary desktop and Macromedia would stay on top;)
It seems to me that once again we are utilizing the power of open source against ourselves. The plain truth is that X11 is HUGE!!! It's based on code that was developed to function on VERY primitive hardware. Instead of changing that code, It was simply added on to. This does make X11 run quite slow in some configurations, regardless of the windomwanager and whatnot.
My suggestions - take what we have learned from X11 -> start a new windowing system from nothing and develop a system DESIGNED for todays insane hardware. I would volunteer but my coding is less than up to par to develop a fast windowing system.
A nice option would be ports of the XFREE86 libraries which could utilize the new windowing system for those folks that want to continue utilizing lightweight X applications.
Sure It's a great idea and could help organize the web a little... It would be expensive to implement as new software woul dhave to be purchased EVERYWHRE -> How confusing would all this be for the average computer user? -> Would it still be possible to effectively search across namespaces?
This sounds like something Bill Gates would say... I wonder if there's any kind of talk taking place beween M$ and SCO - If not I still maintain my stand: I wonder how much of the LINUX source has been used by M$ in which case, they too would be subjected to having their heads buried in a big pile of horse shit by SCO ---
It's annoying that the GEEKS in the world claim LINUX is ready for the desktop. Sure, it's stable and completely customizable and defianately more useable... for a GEEK.
I find it highly annoying that there are 10,000 distros out there and everyone has a different way of doing things. Some include support for this, some include support for this if you spend $$$ some include this program compiled with their customizations... you get the idea. Truth is, LINUX leaves WAY too much to choice for it to be "ready" for the average end-user.
IMHO - I think that the upper-echelon of LINUX users should work with the lower-level LINUX users and start a distro whos primary goal is to make LINUX useable... my dad who is not exactly stupid... should be able to sit down and install it. When it boots up, He should immediately be able to begin installing software that he will use. He shouldn't have to learn about some of the more cryptic functions of LINUX, it should just work.
Take OS X for example, they have a VERY solid OS. It's got a stable framework, the ablility to install it and begin using it right away... fully configured. No device drivers, no configuring sound modem ethernet ide usb firewire drivers... they just work. Sure it's built with a VERY small scope of hardware in mind but that's what makes it so stable.
I'm not saying remove the *functionality* of linux just to acheive the goal of desktop usability... That would be outrageous. I saying that until LINUX is able to be installed and it just work - without much command-line - without hassles - and without having to have a thourough knowledge of HOW a computer works to effectively use it, it's not ready.
The day I beleive that Microsoft is innovating is the day that I look at the source code and it's proven to me that they are not utilizing open-source code in their OS... and other products...
To further illustrate, how is it that they develop support for a new technology, it's buggy as hell, it sucks. The LINUX kernel begins to support it and it's rock-solid as hell and if it's not there's a patch available... The next windows version, the support for the same technologies is rock-solid and stable...
They've back-stabbed everyone else they've dealt with... why not steal from the only OS which COULD wipe them out of the OS market?
Well the players must be open source and include all needed libraries for EVEY platform or what the hell am I to do on my Linux box?? What about my SunSystem? I refuse to run an emulator to listen to a DAMN CD
Doesn't it seem stupid to provide *COPY PROTECTION* on a CD when I can still rip the tracks with *NO* effort whatsoever.
Doesn't it also seem stupid that all I have to do is *ISO* the CD and viola... a backup of the *COPY PROTECTED* CD.
And I just remembered that I'm out of CD's so I'm going to head to Wal-Mart because my legitimately purchased INCUBUS CD won't work in my car anymore... good thing I archived it to my computer.
That's another thing... does the *COPY PROTECTION* really protect anything as I can *ARCHIVE* the *COPY PROTECTED* CD anyway?
Why not reccomend 4D (http://www.4d.com) -> It's initial cost is about 1/8 of Oracle. It's easy to configure, runs on windows and Mac (Client will run under WINE www.winehq.com) (Development environment will run under win Install in VMWARE http://www.vmware.com).
I'll even teach you how to use it while i'm developing your database >:)
It makes more sense to view this document as a plea to those in higher power to pay attention to the direction that Java is heading. It's abviously on the downhill but I think that if Sun was to spend more time fixing current bugs instead of providing more features (this reminds me of someone else I know... M$ anyone?) Java could be a platform that could prove to be cost effective to develop high end software for.
Being a wanna-be programmer, I noticed the impracticality of JAVA simply by writing a few small programs and trying them on various systems. On Linux, they would, for the most part, run well, on Windows, they were SLOW and GROGGY - on SUN, they were also a little slow... keep in mind that the LINUX and WINDOWS tests were done on the same machine!
Sun should concentrate on the current problems and that would be beneficial to everyone!
Stop and think about this again :

Is there a LiveCD that will boot on an "OldWorld" PowerBook 3400c without the use of an OS 9 install?
It would need sound support, and network support...

I think that everyone here is in agreement that we won't use it if m$ develops it -> Unless it's Open Source of course, yeah right!

It's just another reason why use of Microsoft Software when it comes to my finances and other personal information should be forbidden...

Not so long as m$ is a dominant platform -> no one can afford it... and since it's so stable and incredibly error-free ;)
They couldn't use LINUX because the $$$ to SCO would be greater than the price of m$
I suppose it'd be worth it to pay more for a better OS - but not when it should have been free...
