Terrific!! All you need now is a system like the one used in those hand-charged flashlights. 500 miles is plenty of time to charge it back up again. And you could get the kids to do it.

If you assume its hooked up to a UNIX system and fired off by INETD, which are certainly reasonable assumptions, especially in the face of "just do whatever you think is best" when looking for clarification-- then you could write the whole thing in C in just a few minutes. INETD will of course take care of hooking up the socket to your program's STDIO so all you have to do is parse the request, open whatever file, write a few headers and then spool it out. You could probably have it up and running before they got their hand off the doorknob...
This new xerox thing probably isn't all that useful for ordinary stuff. Most people have greasy fingers, bend/rumple the pages, spill ketchup and who knows what else on pages-- etc. I don't think stuffing that paper back in the printer is going to turn out to be a good idea for anybody-- except maybe the printer repair people (does xerox have a stake in any printer companies??).
However, I think the "killer app" for this type of paper is going to turn out to be the security / intelligence communities where what's written-down can be real liabilities. (Okay, also for Enron, President Bush, the Republicans in general, and all of the other greedy, nasty, up-to-no-goodniks out there). The idea of being able to print out a classified report, read it and then know it will fade away has got to have the intelligence communities very interested. Sure they'll probably shred and burn the stuff anyway-- but it will be much harder to dumpster-dive and reconstruct anything useful from the shredded wads.
Of course the most effective use of this new technology will be to use it to print lottery tickets. That way the states can rake in BILLIONS on lotteries they know they'll never have to pay out on! Now that's ingenious!:)
I think it is an excellent proposition to require the elderly to "take a test" to determine if they know "what the Internet is"... provided of course that the phone company mandating it also take a test to determine if they know "what customer support is".
Someone please post his business information and what arenas he operates in. This is the kind of guy I'd like to know about to do business. Someone with balls and is willing to stand up to extortion and blackmail and do what's right. If there's anything I, or the organization I work for needs that this guy or his company can offer, I'd like to stand behind him with my patronage.
SCREW THE RIAA AND THE MPAA. They're a bunch of crooks and assholes who haven't had an original idea since shaking down school kids for their lunch money.
This is the information age. Things change. To paraphrase the immortal words of Carly Fiorina-- those fucktards don't have a god-given right to monopolies anymore.
They weren't out there crying when the information workers were losing their jobs overseas-- they were _sending_ jobs overseas. They weren't crying when the factories shut down and the jobs went to factories overseas-- they were _sending_ the jobs overseas. Now its their turn. What they sell is just bits and there is NO appreciable distrubution cost anymore. They want to keep their high-priced usary models and fuck the rest of us up the ass. No more. Its time for them to DIE like the dinosaurs they are and for new business models to emerge.
After six years of fun fun fun with ole' Dubya... lots of./'rs are simply fed-fucking-up no matter WHAT their political affiliation. In fact, I'd wager that a very large portion of the whole wide world (and not just the terrorist-speaking parts) are sick and tired of the Bush Admonishtration... that goes for "Shut your fucking pie-hole or I'll shoot you in the face!" Cheney too.
For myself, I really can't wait until Bedtime for Bonzo is over and the U.S. can finally start to pull itself together. The last six years have been remarkably like getting slipped roofies by your prom date and then waking up to discover him and the whole football team having a go.
So, you assert that Slashdot is moving to the left-- could be-- its possible-- on the other hand it might also be true that the whole country-- indeed the whole world-- is busy sliding _away_ from the right. You know, I'm not really FOR Kerry or the Democrats, just ANYBODY BUT BUSH! And this time around that will include the Rephooligans too.
All someone slick and savvy would have to do at this point to win an election is get up there and say "I'm not a Republican. I'm not for Bush or Cheney. And I'm not a Democrat either. I think they're all a bunch of scumbagging liars. I think New London and the surrounding area would be an excellent place for a Nuclear Waste Dump site; a Toxic Waste Dump site; a National Crematorium; an Industrial-sized Water & Sewage Treatmentf facility; a combined-forces military proving ground, ordanance-testing facility, and live-fire practice ground; a Super-Max Prison for Extra-Violent Sexual Offenders (Mother Stabbers and Father Rapers); a Minute-Man Nuclear Missle facility; and a shelter for abandoned and wayward buzzards & skunks...
It would be in the public's interest to concentrate all of these facilities in one place-- way out of the way of the rest of the country...
And I'm sure that once the news gets out, property prices will quickly become affordable... all around a good deal for everyone...... everyone that is except for the poor folks in New London and surrounding areas.... they'll get royally screwed-- but hey, its all for the public good. That is an amazingly good point. It is so true that if men show any type of interest in people-- especially children people-- they are automatically treated like suspects and assumed to be up to no good. When the true statistics show that most men-- the majority of men-- are good fathers and love their children, and children in general-- it is true that _some_ men are criminals and should be treated that way. However, our society instead makes the knee-jerk assumption that _all_ men are criminals and men are automatically suspect if they have any inclination towards children no matter how harmless or wholesome. Furthermore, society goes out of its way to treat women child predators with kid gloves-- very few receive even so much as a slap on the wrist or a disapproving "tsk tsk". The _few_ that do get into the legal system are generally given token sentences and referred to "counselling". Even when the crime against the child is more significant-- the woman more often than not is let off extremely lightly. And afterwards? Women sexual predators are not ostracized by societry or hounded by throngs of angry parents-- they are not rejected as pariahs or treated as loathsome creatures-- instead they are invited to make the rounds on all the talk shows-- Oprah, Morey, Riva, Montell-- and all the rest. There is much sexism in our society-- and it cuts in both directions. Men should be encouraged to love and nuture children and not automatically treated with suspicion whenever they show an interest in kids. Women should get stiffer punishments legally and suffer greater societal disdain when involved in a sexual crime-- or any crime for that matter-- women tend to get off lightly almost universally across the board when compared to men.
My post isn't just about crime though-- or even children. That's just the point that got me interested enough to respond. Our society-- our world-- is based on all kinds of social injustices and imbalances. What makes a woman a better parent? What makes a man a better breadwinner? Why are women better represented in "social" fields and men more so in "physical" fields. The argument generally gets down to "nature versus nurture" and yet I don't think you can really make a telling case that either one is really the overriding factor. There are individual cases that demonstrate that no matter what the original circumstances are-- or the genetic dispositions-- people choose lives-- careers, friends, lovers, hobbies, past-times, and other associations-- individually, and based on individual criteria. Can you make broad generalizations along various demographic lines? Certainly. Women tend to like "social" activities more than men. Men tend to like "physical" activities more than women. Women tend to "communicate" more-- better-- whatever. Men tend to "do" more-- better--whatever. Women "feel". Men "react". There's all kinds of assertions and assumptions you can make about men and women. Or white people and black people. Or about Tall people and short people. Or any selection of the population that you care to mention. Certainly there are things that identify as well as separate groups of people up and down the spectrum.
Discrimination occurs when one group PURPOSELY SETS OUT TO EXCLUDE another group on the basis of some attribute-- usually physical-- that the discriminated group cannot alter. You cannot alter the fact that you are a man or a woman (sure you can get some surgery-- but really you're just a dickless man or some bizarre rearrangement of a woman)-- you cannot change whether you are white or black, tall or short, heterosexual or homosexual. I would argue that religion is a choice and thus could be discriminated against-- but we have a law that says it can't-- so I'll go with the law/societal recommendation. You _can_ change whether you are rich or poor (though easier to change from rich to poor than vise versa), stinky or sweet-smelling, fat or thin (for most people), and a whole host of other attributes.
Discrimination-- as a concept-- is not _wrong_ though-- not in a
Right On! I completely agree. So many of these asshole companies get rich on the backs of the working folks and do everything in their power to _extort_ money from people who have nowhere else to go. What OTHER music distribution system is out there??? The RIAA and MPAA have it all wrapped up-- a MONOPOLY.
I propose consumers start getting together and create buying collectives. Sign pledges when they join to NOT buy any products from companies that will not negotiate or do business with the collective. Suddenly companies would find themselves with a serious problem-- treat users like scum, they don't get any business. Suddenly the people they're pissing off would start to have the power to fight back.
Waiting for Congress to step in and make some laws??? Shit. Don't bother. They're sucked in deep-- deep in the pockets of the corporate fat cats and rich bastards to lift a finger. Rebublicans? Its been going on for so long its institutionalized.
Government of the people, by the people and for the people??? Maybe-- but the PEOPLE have to get off their collective fucking asses and start shutting these assholes down. Neither party is going to stray too far from what their rich, elite, asshole bastard handlers want. And what they want is what YOU got.
With all the recent news of mass killings in Iraq, the sagging US economy, the problem with immigration and illegal immigrants, the news of congressional scandals, stories of massacres by marines, the NSA listening in on private conversations, and his own sagging poll numbers-- George W. Bush held a press conference to address these various concerns by US citizens who are afraid of losing their jobs, unable to get health insurance, afraid of government intrusion into their private lives and abuses by US marines in Iraq and Afghanistan, and identity theft stemming from the recent spate of lost personal data at the hands of government officials. Bloody wankers.
I don't mind giving them revenue, nor getting paid (even very well, if indeed they are) for their jobs.
I just object to their arbitrart and capricious use of the "Reject" button.
But as I said before, its their site, their rules.
They don't care if its a dupe. Slashdot editors are assholes.
They claim to care about site integrity and good material but are extremely biased with their rejection button.
I've seen _really stupid_ articles get posted and _very good_ articles get canned for no apparent reason.
There's no review process and no rebuttal or possibility for reconsideration.
Okay, so its their site and they make the rules. I can live with that. But they're still assholes.
