This is why you should never trust some other company with your own surveillance needs. There are plenty of camera + software combinations that can do TCP/IP stuff and you can tinker with it yourself and set it up on your own apache server.
I am sure someone will post with OSS software solutions.
Aside from that, how many people really need web-enabled surveillance? Just record it to HD or have it monitored live in closed-circuit fashion.
Laporte is in Indiana, and Indiana has gone republican for the last 30 years in every pres election. Even so, the loss of 50k votes is disturbing, but not as disturbing as it would be in a state that was much closer (michigan).
First of all -- you are speaking in percentages. Thats all fine and good, but its a shitload easier to go from GDP of 1 to a GDP of 2, than it is of GDP 400T to 450T. Im sure you understand my point. Also, most economic theories dictate that many of the poorer countries will have faster growth than larger more prosperous countries will. So your points here are invalid.
Regardless, my main fact stands. I said NATIVE growth. This means economic growth that has come from within. For example, many people say that india is growing rapidly, but MOST of it is not native growth -- it is growth due to outsourcing of other countries. They are not the end benefactor, the parent corporation is (usually housed in US, Japan, etc). This is almost definately the case for Ireland, which has many outsourced companies here becuase labor is cheap and they all speak english natively. In the last 10 years, the only REAL NATIVE economic growth has come from the US and China. Everyone else is just a leech. Real economic growth comes from small businesses, startups, not large businesses outsourcing to your country. If you dont have lots of startups in your area, then you wont have much real economic growth.
Apparently you have never been to europe... Outside of Switzerland, the governments of most European countries regulate everything they can think of. This is why there arent very many new businesses (And as such, much native economic growth). Too much paperwork, and too many rules.
When I'm drinking on Sunday! (Illegal in some areas)
Do you have a reference for this? I know of many places where it is illegal to PURCHASE alcohol on sundays, but I have never been to a place where it is illegal to CONSUME alcohol on sundays. Wouldnt this kill the local restaurants?
Good notes, but you miss the fact that wireless networks have limited bandwidth. A WIFI network, even 802.11g, serving more than 50 VPNS will dry up quickly in terms of useable bandwidth. 802.11B is even worse.
In other words, VPN is great for low-density situations, but still sucks in big open spaces where there are lots of wifi users.
Which would you rather have, a secure connection that drops every 20 seconds becuase of oversaturation, or a insecure connection that you can SSH out of that holds connection?
I think you get the picture.

Yes, but if they had knowledge of such crimes as they were being committed, or planned to commit, then they are not immune any longer.
Besides, most large corporations like the ones you speak about are owned by millions of people. Are you trying to tell me that millions of people want to hire criminals? Come on.
Ok, they are owned indirectly, and managed through pension fund managers and mutual fund managers, but even so, are you telling me that those fund managers want to hire criminals? No, investing in PR disasters is not good for their business.
"investors encourage profitable risk taking" Thats right. It is in their best interest to take risk, they gain from it, and they lose from it. Its their money they are gambling. Its in managements best interest to limit risk, they gain from it somewhat when things go right, but suffer infinitely when things go wrong. Are you saying that no one should be undertaking "Profitable Risk Taking"? I would love to hear how one can make a profit without taking a risk. If you have found a way, please share.
"Think about that: if I'm a shareholder, I can hire somebody as a director who then breaks the law - but they can't touch me. If that crime makes me a lot of money, that money is inviolate: share price rises, I cash out, the crime is discovered, and the director involved goes to jail." What did the investor do wrong? If they had knowledge of crime to be committed and did nothing, they have breached fiduciary duty. If they did not know previously or during, where is the crime? The director is not a robot, he has ability to make choices. If the investor DID know, and hired a puppet, then he is in breach, and is liable.
Besides, I thought we were talking about the interaction with politics, not corporate fraud.

I think we agree on some fundamental level. But I Believe Its the interaction with government that causes the problem, not the limited liability.
Along with this, you are missing a key point. Companies dont have any limited liability. You can sue the hell out of a company, take everything. Companies do NOT have limited liability, their investors do. IE - You can take everything in the bank accounts, all the assets, but you cant take the owners house.
Companies take risks on things like "biotech, handling of toxic chemicals, and consumer safely" because they think it will pay off, not becuase they are evil and trying to hurt people. That is the problem, not the limited liability. The problem is that they can make a buck by investing it into "government" in ways that will help them. Solving this problem will help more than taking away limited liability. As I said, prevent the company from mailing checks, buying politicians cars, giving them free whatever, and you have solved the problem to a certain degree. Then limit the amount any one individual can give to a politician or government comittee, and this means not only money but also perks, and you are pretty much home.
Either way, I think we agree, the problem is that corporations are a larger priority for government to serve right now than the people, and that has to change, else we need to revolt.

Please god tell me you are kidding. Limited Liability is the backbone of any economic growth.
Limited Liability makes jobs possible. Business needs to be able to make mistakes. Investors do not make day to day decisions in the business, so they should not be punished for day to day mistakes. They are only punishable for what they have invested, nothing else. If investors were liable for any potential thing the business does, they would not invest nearly as much. This spells bad news for economic growth, which means we get to stagger along at a shitty quality of living, all becuase you are afraid of limited liability.
No, Fuck that, we NEED limited liability in corporations. What we DONT need, is those corporations mailing checks to politicians.
Hey you got me;p. But its late, i am very tired, and I had beer. Good enough reasons for me. Besides, I typed that comment in like 20 seconds. Who cares about proofing slasdot comments, its not I stand to gain from spending more time....
I would agree with you, except for one minor point you made.
"as long as you do not run afoul of discrimination issues - delete all posts by people of a certain race or gender will probably get you into well deserved trouble, for instance"
IANAL, but I do not think this would get you into trouble legally. As I understand it, most of the legal problems with regard to discrimination revolve around employment (Hiring, Promotion, Salary/Benefits, etc). As such, in these cases, if it can be proven (if you want to use that terminology) that the company was acting in a discriminatory manor AND there was some disparate impact (IE -- proven salary, promotion, or whatever were on average higher for white males over a large statistical population).
Most times these laws or regulations dont apply to companies with fewer than 15 employees, and most of the stricter discrimination laws only apply to those corporations that contract with the government.
So, at least in my opinion, while such tactics would be poor choices, and most definately awful PR for whoever did them, they would probably NOT be illegal.
I agree, its the inconsistency that is fucking annoying. It pisses me off to hear that somebody got someone at dell to ship them replacement parts within minutes when it takes me hours to fucking explain to these assholes that I dont need to "click on start, then go to settings, then control panel" blah blah.
I'm not really sure what you are getting at, your post seems to contradict itself...Do you like dell or not? Do you like Ibm or not?
For me, I have never had problems with IBM. When I have an issue with a laptop, they deal with it quickly and effectively. This counts for sales, ordering, shipping, TS, and repairs.
Dell, on the other hand, does fine until they ship you the order. Then try getting someone competent on the phone. Not a chance. Along with that, everyone you CAN talk to is in bloody india, and apparently, they could give a rats ass about Dell's customers in USA. I have done this recently, for at least 3 dell laptops. So, whether they PLAN on switching their TS lines back to the US has yet to be seen, at least by me.
I think you missed the point with Bush's spending. He is doing this on purpose, not mistakenly. Ever heard of starving the beast? The simple fact is [*warning, I am libertarian] that the US government is WAY too big, and needs to shrink drastically. This is exactly what Bush is planning to do. All of these deficits will have some negative short-term affects, but they will be good for the country in the long-term. Excessive spending now will force the government to cut spending later on, and will shrink the government. This is a good thing!
This shrinking will improve state power and shrink federal government, and this is about as republican as you can get. Im excited. I love it.

This was for business laptops, if I recall correctly. Their desktops and Inspiron notebooks are still in India...
Have you had to do this recently? Dell support sucks hardcore these days, they are trying to cut costs... Not to mention most support is in india.
I have had to do this with a number of clients. Now I only deal with IBM. They dont dick around.
