  1. I owned one of these briefly on Gateway Wireless Connected DVD Player Reviewed · · Score: 3, Informative

I purchased one of these back when the Gateway stores were closing for $85. It's OK at best - I certainly don't think the unit deserved an 8/10; I have an Xbox with XBMC and if the Gateway unit got 8/10, XBMC would deserve about 20/10. The Gateway unit: Only actually plays MPEG 1 & 2 (ie the computer software transcodes Divx and others to MPEG2 upon playback. You can't play Divx from CD's in the player itself) Doesn't support directories If you are debating between this and a Mod'd Xbox, the Mod'd Xbox TOTALLY DESTROYS this. If you don't know which end of a soldering iron is hot, well then maybe consider this only if you can't find a friend to mod an Xbox, but honestly, it took about 2 days for this product to bore me and wind up on eBay - XBMC is that much superior to it. I would even say that once it is installed, XBMC is easier to use and has a nicer user interface, so there is virtually no reason to purchase this product - sorry Gateway, but it sucks IMHO.

  2. Re:Limited staff and bandwidth on Should Colleges Monitor Students' PCs? · · Score: 1

No it's not. Nessus and some scripts can automatically identify infected machines and quaranteen them completely automatically. In fact, I've seen the same system un-quaranteen machines when they are repaired. Lots of colleges do just that.
A mandatory client is overstepping their boundaries. They should scan and quaranteen, but what about when they install a patch that breaks my computer. Can they be legally held responsible? Maybe. What if someone in their service desk exploits their utility to access my computer, are they liabel?
I personally think this might be enough to make me consider changing colleges (As an IT major I value my computer highly, ie I'm a geek)

I'm not saying there aren't good textbooks out there - but I am saying that just because it is published does not mean it is correct.

Microsoft should allow pirated copies to update for a number of reasons. First off, unpatched Windows machines make life worse for EVERYONE, and just makes Microsoft look worse. Secondly, why push people more toward Linux (from MS's point of view) Personally, I'm using XP Corporate installs at home. Is it legal? No. Do I feel guilty? Not in the least. Why not? Because I actually have MORE LEGIMATE XP PRO LICENSES THAN I HAVE XP PRO INSTALLED ON. I have 3 LEGIMATE XP Pro licenses, and 2 computers with XP Pro installed on them. I just am constantly changing hardware, and activation is a pain, so I install off a corporate CD to avoid it. I've been meaning to switch my main desktop to Linux anyway (I allready have more Linux boxes than Windows ones) If I couldn't update my XP corp install, it would probably be the push I need to do it...

When Kate Botello left The ScreenSavers, I feel it went from being a interesting, yet geeky show (a show I HAD to watch - if I was out it was recorded) to a less interesting show. As ZDTV became TechTV, it became dumbed down to the point where I would only catch the show once a month, if that.
If only we could have the original days of ZDTV back, that would be great.

Why? Chipsets. There are NO GOOD CHIPSETS for Athlons.
    I've personally worked with:
    VIA - Garbage (Buggy everything)
ALI - Garbage (Buggy ACPI, others)
    SIS - Garbage

AMD760MP - had some bad experiences with it and ultimately gave up on the board.

I haven't used the NVidia or ATI Chipsets, but I've had very bad experiences with everything not made by ServerWorks or Intel. You have to look at compatibility and reliability in addition to price and peformance.
When I was shopping around for a mobo and CPU, I looked at the Athlons again, because I wanted to do SMP and 2 Xeon's are too expensive. But there's no good AMD chipsets.

This means that they can be read faster in some cases, and will help increase the tolerance to scratches/dust (ECC can be used elsewhere)
Ultimately, this means that future technologies can pack bits tighter on discs, as the discs can be made more accurately. In other words, more storage!

This thing is AWSOME! I saw it at CES and I'm seriously thinking of getting one when they come out. It is truely amazing. The only thing I'm not sure of is the screen seemed prone to getting damaged. They also claimed they had it running off the same battery at CES all day and it was still running (so several hour battery life)
Not sure if the pictures on this site show it (it's slashdotted) as none of the other pictures I've seen show this, but the screen slides up about 1/2 way to reveal a little QWERTY keyboard.
