This is so true. Tons of scrolling output (say cat a big file) on Konsole or Gnome-Terminal slows them down an spikes CPU massively.
But minimizing/switching the offending window is enough to fix the issue most of the time.
Many desktop motherboards give the option of booting from specific hard drives. That's the option I use. I install the OS on a hard drive as if it were the only OS, then choose the hard drive while booting up. The downside is, I have to remember which of my 3 drives has which OS.
I agree. My new job is teaching me AIX and I have found it impressive. smit/smitty is quite cool.(Apart from some weirdness for me in older smitty versions) Nothing quite that comprehensive, consistent and simple exists in the Linux world.
Case in point, look at the number of nimrods who assume gnu grep and use gnu specific switches for their make scripts.
It is wrong to assume GNU grep is always present, but Solaris and Aix do go out of their way to provide official support for GNU utilities. This is obviously better for them than to retrofit GNU capabilities to their utils. I think, therefore GNU should be made the standard on all UNIX. Even if GNU utils are not present, any Sysadmin should use "uname" to test the OS type.
SUN/IBM provide official GNU packages because GNU IS better. Do you think the sh/ksh that comes with Sun/IBM is better than bash or pdksh? For scripting, GNU greps' -C, -A, -B , -P switches are so much more useful. GNU finds' "-iname" switch is pure gold.
Hi
You are forgetting to inform them about about the "Akhand Bharat" ideology that many (most?) RSS/VHP/SS cadres believe in. Some believe it openly, some in covert (like Advani) You know what it says... come on! You want me to remind you? It calls for subjugation/extermination of all non-hindus in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal to re-create the glorious hindu past. How is this different from Islamic nationalists? How is this different from Nazis wanting to assimilate all Aryan countries and destroy their non-aryan populace.
RSS and other hindu nationalists openly call for use of nuclear weapons. How is this different from neo-cons in the US or Iran?
Have you been to an RSS rally? Well neither have I, but I'm from Nagpur so I have some idea about what I'm talking about. RSS rallys are practically a mirror of Nazi rallys with the same hate filled monologue and brain washing of people and children.
I do support a couple of things that these guys say. The Uniform civil code for example. However, if you happen to listen to their leaders speak, it seems they want a Uniform civil code not for the human rights of Muslim women, but just because Hindu men are being denied something that Muslim men aren't! Are they equally concerned about the plight/concerns of Kashmiri Muslims as they are of Kashmiri Pundits? Of course not.
You are saying that RSS does a lot of charity work. Well it's possible to do so by having nothing to do with religion. Most people who help during disasters are not seeking religious mileage. (Though they may be religiously motivated)
You mention a quote saying a SS office having a poster of Ambedkar. What a laugh. That means they have not read a single word Ambedkar ever wrote.(I have read enough)Dr. Ambedkar was a ultra-modernist who did want want anything to do with a divisive religion like Hinduism. He did not care a rats ass about the Vedas and other religious books. Please read his books and get back to me. Also get back to the Shiv Sainiks who have Ambedkars poster.
You mention all the "achievements" of Shiv Sena in another post. Of course, the town planners and the Western consultants and IAS officers and hundreds of engineers had nothing to do with improving Mumbai... it was all Shiv Sena. Did it ever occur to you that spending on Public transport is wiser than spending on flyovers? Because the traffic in Mumbai is asked fucked as ever and will continue to get worse. And of course, they completely stopped corruption. In Dabhol for example. You are drinking too much kool aid if you think the SS governs any better or worse than Congress or any other. As far as I am concerned, the Congress is the lesser of two evils. And I'm not a Congress supporter by any stretch of imagination.
And the Dharavi slum is "improved"? Come on! I live less than a kilometer from Dharavi and it's as fucked up as ever. But now with some very filthy and half hearted Apartment complexes.
I'm not sure where you got the idea that the media does not report "atrocities against Hindus" by Communists. I read them all the time. Most Naxalites or Communists are not "godless hindus". Do you think Communist cadres in Bengal do not attend Durga puja or the dozen other religious festivals? How many Temples/Churches/Mosques do Naxalites/Communists attack. Please. When Naxalites attack, it's not because they hate Hindus. I oppose their violence, but they do have some genuine concerns. Sometimes they are poor who are simply brain washed and given power through a gun. So these are "atrocities against Hindus by other Hindus".
Finally, why don't you ask the readers of your post to Google "Shiv Sena attacks" ? Let people Google NUMBER of times Shiv Sena cadres have attacked/vandalized/beat up INNOCENTS for no reason at all. Why don't you talk about that art student from MP who was arrested and the Art dean suspended for "nude paintings"? How about MF Hussein who is in exile? All this when the fucking ancient temples are full of nude paintings.
I modded you up, but also had to comment:
When I read OS books in college, they mostly stated that "an OS should come with compilers and related system tools".
MS did not include a decent compiler, a decent editor and related tools until recently. (They do have a commandline compiler and a crippled version of Visual Studio for download today)
Keep dreaming. The PS2 was officially released in India 3 years after its international launch. But you should be able to buy the PS3 in the grey market in a few months.
This 17 HP is for 1800$. The 17 MBP is 2800$. If you think 330MHz is worth 1000 $ then you have the money for it and don't need to think twice. The MBP does come with more RAM but that can be added to the HP for much cheaper.
Adding one huge drive to the HP, instead of two smaller ones only increases its price by a couple of hundred $. But its not about the price...having 2 drives is another feature I like. Since I'm always running Vmware or Xen on my machines, keeping the virtual OS on another drive does help performance.
The truth is, I have to buy a laptop in the near future, but I'm not able to justify the higher price of a Mac. Despite the fact that I would love to use OS X and have never owned a Mac before.
HP extended service plans 2-year HP Accidental Damage Protection with Express Repair extended service plan.
This was for 1773 after 50$ rebate.
HP also has a separate Numpad (important for me). This also comes with TWO year warranty with Accidental damage protection. The DVD writer is 8X. The graphics card is similar to the X1600 (Dont forget the X1600 is underclocked in the MBP)
It also comes with a VGA and HDMI port. (A HDMI to DVI adaptor is 5-10$).
The HP screen has higher resolution, and is 17. There are two hard drives.
As far as portability is concerned, the HP is pretty thin and not that different from the 17 MBP. (This is from a in store comparision). Looks is up to the be holder.
I'm sure the price can better if you buy it whenever HP has a 15% off coupon, which they release every now and then.
The MBP has only one big pro: Mac OSX. Which doesnt matter for me as I will be using Linux on the HP. The other MBP extras are trivial. Like MagSafe, FW 800, lighted keyboard.
Last month AMD chips were expensive and it was well known for a few months that Intel would bring new chips and AMD will drop prices. So the last few months were definitely NOT the right time to buy.
For another eg. the X2 3800 939 was 280$ for many months, I bought it some days ago for 147 after the price drop. I bought AMD as I didnt want to upgrade my MBoard and RAM. For someone who wanted to go Intel, the past few months were an even worse time to buy, as the new Intel chips overperform and are reasonably priced.
There have been, and will be many such times in the industry when it is not the right time to buy.
Only the Super rich in India can afford to buy a new house. There is simply no land in cities for a new house. The money you would spend on a OLD house in Bombay/Bangalore/Delhi etc would be easily above the average US house cost. Theres land you can buy away from the cities but those places wouldnt have the jobs, electricity etc. And dont forget, the quality/construction of a house in India is NOWHERE near that in the US.
Almost EVERYONE lives in an apartment, unless you were lucky enough to inherit an ancestral home. Even the prices of some dingy old Apts in some areas could be more than a few hundred thousand K $. But your salary would be a lot less than the US. So the apartment you do end up buying would be ummm pathetic.
Only the super rich in India can have a BMW or a Merc. Even with a high Indian salary you'd end up with a Corolla/Sonata . You cant even buy a Subaru, Saab, Infiniti, (and many others) as they do not have a presence in India.
I realise I'm talking about material things only... but some material things are important. Like power. Bombay(Mumbai) is the ONLY city in India where there is power 365 days a year. In a large city like Pune with many IT companies, there are frequent power cuts EVERYDAY. The more rural you go, the worse it gets. The roads are so horribly maintained and crowded, even if you had a BMW you'd never take it out. Nobody on the road makes way for the Fire truck or the Ambulance.. not because Indians are inhuman.. theres no fucking place to move! Theres no such thing as a fire lane. Entire neighbourhoods do not have a fire hydrant...which is a good move to save money, as they wouldnt have water anyways.
There is no broadband internet. So called 256kbps and above lines always under deliver and are more expensive than a 1.5mbps line in the US. No ISP has Usenet servers. (Try calling them and ask about it) Computer hardware is more expenive than the US.(In absolute $ value as well, not just due to lower salary)
Personally I left India as I couldnt stand the corruption and RUDENESS of corrupt people. People in the US like to complain how rich people and politicians control everything. Live in India for month and you'll see how much worse that is over there.
Corruption does help you if you're rich enough. With enough money, you can get caught with pot/cocaine, run over your SUV over homeless people, shoot hot chicks who reject you(or rape them), grab land from farmers, and NO one.. NO one can touch you.
There are TONS of things wrong in India compared to a developed comutry. Its not all bad (food is good and cheap for eg.), and India has enough people to make you think that the worst is unlikely to happen to you. I will probably go back to take care of my parents when they get old.
You're right, but FWIW, my Windows 2000 laptop sometimes stops copying/cutting completely.
I think it has something to do with MS Ooffice which gave me "OLE not working error" or somesuch error a while ago.
Also an Excel doc refused to open on the same machine but opened fine under OO in linux.
Tommorow, I will reproduce this and try to make a movie with VNC.
Pakistan does aid the U.S. in this area, but also has an internal situation that makes it difficult for them when Pakistan's government is revealed as aiding the U.S. in this area.
Right. And in these remote inaccessible villages, the al Queda is so stupid they have no clue that the US is helping Pakistan against them. Which is why, when it was 'leaked' that the blond and black chaps they'd been fighting all this time were not russians or pakistanis, they were summararily shocked. They were hurt when it was revealed that the shiny new pakistani weaponry wasnt locally made stuff. The US?? Against us ?? No way !!1 @:(
They are certainly capable of creating innovative gadgets. The PSP for example is an awesome device. But it is choking, and one reason for that is because Sony insisted on putting a optical drive in a portable player.
A custom optical drive that only licensed players can create discs for. Why would anyone pay twice as much for a movie they might already own in DVD format, to watch in lower quality on a smaller screen? Then their memory stick is (was?) significantly expensive and lacked higher capacity compared to other formats.
They made it difficult to make cool accessories for the PSP like their own upcoming PSP camera. They provide no software for putting your own content on the PSP.(Which may not be a bad thing considering their software reputation) My PSP did not come with a USB cable, it was almost like Sony was discouraging me to connect it with a computer.
Then of course the biggest blunder that all console makers love to make: I buy a computer but only "approved" code can run on it. For the PSP, legalizing homebrew can bring it back to life.
If they had made it legally extensible, people would have had all kinds of accesories/software for it like a camera, cellphone, GPS etc. Truly, an awesome device gone to waste.
I'm using Windows XP and I do know about the Event log. I should have said its not quite like Linux, where an app has its config file and a log file. Sadly the Event log had no information. No 'Warning' or 'Error' entries. I didnt feel like installing Cygwin to grep through a saved.tx event log.
The Systemroot/Minidump or the Systemroot/Memory.dump DID NOT exist (Yes crash dumping is enabled). Did I mention that when I was lucky to see the error message before the blue screen, it said "Won't write to disk because the registry is too big." Or something to that effect. Web search came up with nothing.
I would have loved to play with things a bit more, but I needed the app running.
All I know is that reinstalling Windows and the App has fixed everything (so far).
Unison

AFAIK, Nokia has been interested in the lower end of the market since the late nineties. They have had a 40$ phone in India for ages.
There was this story where experienced art critics were asked to comment on paintings made by a monkey (or an elephant) and made to look like idiots.

There was a Samba vulnerability recently whose damage was mitigated by SELinux. Link
Great analogy!

Funny, but you can do this:
x /core/6/i386/os/Fedora/RPMS/fedora-release-6-4.noa rch.rpm
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/YumUpgradeFaq
Simply use this rpm instead of the one on that site.

Dont forget to do yum update before and after.
