Blame it on GTK. I use Firefox simultaneously, on similarly configured XP and Linux machines. They use the same monitor through a KVM switch. FF on Windows XP is lightning fast and dog slow on Linux (Fedora 5 GNOME for now) .

While I applaud the efforts of people who worked hard on GIMP/GTK/GNOME and all related technologies, fact remains that they are dog slow on the same hardware when compared to Windows and QT.

On top of all this, most distros insist on making GNOME the default and KDE the bastard child. That still makes KDE zippier and therefore more usable.

There are so many things wrong with GTK, the file open/save dialog and the utter wastage of whitespace are the first to come to mind.

After which I might see an error or find the blue screen.
In Windows there are NO logs, no clues, NOTHING to indicate what the problem might be. You're completely blind. The errors are different every time. Don't ask me to re install, I've done that several times.
With the latest reinstall, I'm getting another Windows lock up: it only happens randomly with .avi files. The same files on the same drive that Linux has no problem with.

If you compare an equivalent Sony Vaio to a Macbook, certainly both of them have excellent build quality. They both cost more or less the same, but the Sony has more RAM, bigger HDD, better optical drive. Which is why I said, the only reason to prefer the Mac over the Sony would be the OS.

No one can suggest by looking at their exteriors that either one has better quality materials or either one was built with more time...You're basically assuming that Asus spends less time/quality on their own branded laptops. If that were true, then why for example, is news circulating today that the Macbook x1600 GPU is slower clocked than other brands, to keep noise/heat low. Why has Apple had as many problems as other brands (though their service is better than most.) Take a look at Asus laptops. They have excellent quality. And they are always cheaper and/or better equipped than an Apple.

Your automibile analogy would apply to this situation if the Skoda and the Bentley shared the same chassis, tranny, suspension, electrics etc but the Bentley came with slightly better exterior.

Things are OK on the performance side with Apple now that they have Core Duo. They claim the Duo is 5 times faster than G4 on certain benchmarks. That means, the Pentium M is atleast twice as fast. Now just compare the prices of G4 laptops and Pentium M. Ok so this is a bit like Apples to oranges, but yet the fact remains that G4 laptops would be bought today only by the clueless.

Of course, you're right when it comes to brand, people will do almost anything, especially non-techies. I was talking only about techies when comparing Apple offerengs to other laptops.

However, Suse Knoppix and Mandirva have very a polished KDE setup.

As for the GP, Konqueror as a file manager is miles ahead of Gnome. If you're in the List view in Nautilus, how do you Drag-Select ? How do you paste ? You can't. Nautilus is again much slower than Konqueror. Watch how long each one takes to list filesizes in the same directories. If ever in Gnome, I prefer to use Konqueror as my filemanager. Konqueror has TABs.. even for file management.

GTK apps use too much White space in menus and other areas. It makes my 1600x1200 desktop look like the 1280x1024 one in KDE. No, reducing font size dosent really help and sometimes creates other problems. At the same resolution, Firefox shows a lot less bookmarks than Firefox in Windows. The "life came from comets" statement is just a theory, like many other things in science. However, a lot of scientific ponderings and observations have taken place and are taking place about this theory. Therefore, there exists some possibility that it might be true. No scientific organization or any Govt is saying that life happened ONLY this way and NO other way.

Many scientists accept the possibility that comets MIGHT have had a role in evolution or life because of certain observed phenomena that agrees with hypothesis (and vice versa). That is science. OTOH, religious freaks refuse to consider any other point of view except the 'interpretation' of their religious text even if it flies in the face of observable evidence. That's faith. Like those who say dinosaur bones are a Test From God or some shit. While scientists regularly disagree with each other, they atleast have some observations, deductions or calculations to show for it. Religious freaks who fight among each other have nothing to say except "My interpretation r0x0r!!" or "My god is better than yours !".

If scientists could assemble non-living material into a living organism it would certainly help the theory of evolution.

Thats not a very smart argument. It's like those people who refused to believe that the earth is round unless they saw a photo of it from space, even when scientists, astronomers, sailors had known for centuries that the earth was spherical, purely through observation of natural phenomena and calculations... which some people are too stupid to understand or too bigoted to accept. Anyone who needs that kind of 'proof' to 'believe' in evolution... its like talking those people in the US who still belive the Sun moves around the earth.

Didn't matter what kind, but he was going to be an engineer. He's really not all that interested in it, hence he's working in something else right now (CE has almost nothing to do with network support).

This cultural thing does exist and really gets in the way of smart people. And people look up to Engineers and Doctors (and these days MBA's) BUT only from 'good' schools. That means if a girl/guy says "I'm doing this Masters/PHd in History/Biology/Chem/Physics involving such and such", or if they are from a 'small' school, they are looked down upon! People say: "Not good husband/wife material this one." "Poor fellow ... it seems he couldnt get in a good engineering/medical school."

Indians are very smart, but very few are interested in what they are studying. And studying in India basically means memorizing a lot of stuff without understanding it, so a lot of people do not know basic stuff. The other day a girl who has A grade in India and is doing Masters in US, asked me what the Return key was.I kid you not. Most of the Indians I know in the US are doing or have done their MS in some field but are least interested in what they do.
You can't blame them for such a attitude though. India is still a very poor country. And many of the young people you see had parents who faced (or are facing) EXTREME hardship when they were young. It is hammered from childhood how important an education is. You're a looser if you dont do well in school/college. This is true for the entire middle class and thankfully some of the poorer people believe this as well. Windows puts links to apps in directories and each dir automatically becomes a sub menu. Is there any great reason the Freedesktoop standard was not designed this way ? Instead of links, we could have had some other fancy files, but they could have still lived in dirs and sub dirs. Windows also has a 'All Users' dir for links that go in every users menu.

Editing menus in Windows is simple. Right click and select Explore. Or simply Right click and say delete. Since the entries are Win shortcuts, you can also edit them, rename them and add commandline arguments. Why cant i do a 'Add Launcher' with Gnome menus, like I can with Panels?

I'm sure someone can reply to this post giving some extremely long winded, counterintuitive and retarted way to Add and or Delete menu entires, but thats NOT the way I want to do it.
