In England you have to have your phone "unlocked" to use it on another network. The process isn't legal, but small shops will do it for about 10 quid.

This is entirely dependent on the network you use. Orange lock all of their phones, whereas Vodaphone generally don't (although a few of their recent Live! offerings have been locked). The process of unlocking the phone is completely legal in a lot of cases. I used to have a Siemens SL42e on Orange. You could unlock it by sending it to an official Siemens support centre. I also had a friend who was going travelling for a few months and wanted to be able to use foreign Pay As You Go SIM cards in his Siemens S55. He phoned up Orange and they unlocked it over the air for him. I know for a fact that Vodaphone's locked version of the Sony Ericsson T610 can be unlocked by applying an official SE firmware to it.

Turkey and Greece have been at odds over Cyprus since the 1960s resulting in the deaths of thousands of civilians as well as the creation of between 150,000 and 200,000 refugees.

By the way, there is no such thing as "free health care". It costs money and it costs A LOT.

Sorry you're right. What I meant was health care that is free at the point of delivery. Obviously this requires a huge amount of money, but I think that it is definitely possible to do it well. In the UK there is a constant putting down of our National Health Service for various reasons, almost all stemming from the fact that it is chronically under-funded.

However, if you look at countries such as Sweden, where there are high taxes (upwards of 50% in the highest bracket), there is far more money to provide not only a decent health service (average female life expectancy of 81 years compared to the USA's 79 years for white women down to 75 years for black women), but also other key public services such as education (Sweden has virtually 100% literacy compared to the USA's 85%).

In case you were wondering where all these statistics came from I found them all on my Encyclopaedia Britannica DVD - the only good thing to come from the fact that I once bought a PC from Tiny when I was young and foolish :)

I suppose this is probably off-topic, but it's something I've wondered about for a while. As a Brit, it seems that a lot of vocal Americans think that it's some kind of capital crime to be left-wing. I can't see any reason (other than hedonism) why people would be against fundamental necessities such as free healthcare and the welfare state.

Does this anti-left mentality come from the fact that the US spent 50 years locked in a power struggle with the Commies? Or is it just that all far too many people care about is the Almighty Buck?

This isn't intended as a troll so apologies if I've offended anyone but it's one of these things that just confuses the hell out of me.

Also, the kernel compile is unfair, because gentoo-sources includes a whole load of patches that Mandrake and Debian don't.

    From the article:

The same 2.4.21 source was copied to all machines and compiled using the same options. However, it should be noted that the Debian system used gcc 3.3.1 whilst the Mandrake and Gentoo installations used gcc 3.3.2 .

    Which leads us to...

Finally, what's with measuring compile times? How is that a fair way of measuring performance?

I don't see any problem with comparing compile times. In the case of Mandrake and Gentoo, it's the same version of gcc being used and the exact same hardware being used each time so it's a reasonable comparison.

it looks like the guys doing the testing got their CFLAGS wrong

That may well be the case, but all that goes to show is that it's really easy to mess things up on Gentoo so that you get crap performance.

I don't know if this is true for the PS2 (which is shocking since I own one) but certainly the PAL Gamecube is capable of doing a 60Hz output if the TV and game support it. The bonus disk that comes with GC Zelda is 60Hz only. The Dreamcast was also capable of 60Hz output. I would imagine that most games these days support the 60Hz option unless the developer is too lazy to bother with it.
