I recall reading something, don't recall where, that recent generations have a hard time working things through themselves. New hires are needing their hands held more and more, requiring feedback on a regular basis. The one theory that was given for this was video games. Video games provide instant gratification, feedback within seconds and kids become accustom to this. I think can see this making sense, when I'm bored and need something to do I turn on a video game. After several minutes of playing things are good.
I find it different than sitting down and reading a book. Maybe it is better that kids don't have any extra access to video games, then again this could just be one persons theory.
In recent news, many soccer moms have gone missing. It seems after driving their GPS navigated SUV's they got lost and were unable to find their way home with the GPS systems went down. Several attempts were made via OnStar, however OnStar could not determine the location of the vechile without GPS. The inability to read basic road signs, meant the Moms could not give their location, they would just keep asking "Left or Right, LEFT OR RIGHT!!"
How different is that from LOTS of geeks crossing their fingers, popping open some new hardware to play around? I thought it was a geek's purpose in life to have curiousity in everything. Just think, next time you see a link wonder what could happen.
When you finally do click on the link though, don't come to/. because we will all laugh at you for doing it.

That is based on alphabetics ordering, I think it would make more sense to sort based on rating. That has a little more significance when it comes to google.

I figured I would look up mountain biking. However, in my quick typing I entered mountian instead and it continued and accepted that. It gave me many valid searches, which I probably wouldn't have found if I entered the search string properly. Of course, it did indicate that mountain was spelled incorrectly as normal.
I figured this could be a useful feature as you probably don't make an effort to misspell your entries, yet many items on the web could have useful information with the misspelled word. So, I entered mount to see the completion, and no mountian, just correctly spelled words.
I guess we'll just have to continue to misspell everything.
Well, this got modded up as Funny, but I was thinking the same thing. I never noticed them on slashdot. Maybe I should say I never took notice of them until they were pointed out. So, not only do I have selective hearing, but I also have selective vision.
There are of course many ads which I do notice, let the ones on weather.com which you must click "skip ad" to continue. Then there are those stupid flash windows which move the close button or make it blend in with the background so it isn't visible.
When it comes to banner ads, I have no problems with them, when I notice them that is.
This is very interesting actually. One of the main arguments to distributing MP3's is that people who like music go and buy the music. There is no reason that this can't be applied to anything. If someone is using pirated software to sample and then actually go and buy the copy, why should they be punished?
Granted there are many people who will not go and buy the game. This could be for a couple reasons, they are cheap and immoral or the game just sucked and they have no interest. I would be surprised if anyone registered a pirate copy to their common login, but then again. Maybe Valve should allow a method of demoing the games through Steam. At least they get to control the "sampling"
This was the first thing I thought of as well, it is completely insane the amount of power some cpu's are using now. Granted, there are chips which are efficient, but there should be steps taken by all those designing hardware to decrease the power consumption. I mean all components in a computer, hard drives, video cards, etc.
But not all blame should be placed on the hardware companies. Those designing software could be more efficient in their usage of the processor. I think most people have become accustom to the fact that cpu's are powerful enough to do whatever we want and if they aren't we will just wait a couple months.
I guess things are moving so fast now it is hard for anyone to keep up.
People can get away with not paying for an OS, but if you decide to spend your money on an OS and not a hard drive, you could be in for some difficulties.
... some related articles on President Bush's ... one finds that below the glitz and the sexiness, there's just not much content
Did you just call Bush sexy?
Seriously, if any family that can afford college can afford a luxury car, is it really a luxury anymore??
Could this just be an indication that college is a luxury?
Two cents? No wonder you don't see it as an incentive you have to give more than that.
I guess he never had the emulate 3-button mouse option enabled, I would be frustrated too.

Well, MS Office doesn't work as we 'have' to say. Then again, I don't work either I don't think I'm eligible.
5 Guns and a Nazi Game? Hmm, I don't think you get good old-fashioned fun like that anymore.

That makes me thing of the bear patrol. Homer: "Not a bear in sight. The Bear Patrol must be working like a charm."
I always thought it was the code that was the problem, turns out I just write poor code.
Well, no shit!
Was there ever a time the code was to blame? This is like blaming the newspaper, the actual peice of paper, for spelling mistakes.
"AI in games can only go so far" Yes, but intelligence in multiplayer doesn't go much further.
"demands of most of North America, if them clever Canadians can just figure out a way to export this."
I think we might be able to manage that, if you can export some heat for our winters.
I would love to see someone use vi on that thing. Look where they dropped the ESC key, all the way on the right.

Ok, I built it all as directed but this thing doesn't go anywhere near 430km/h.
