    All these years when the whole country was talking seriously about main street being decimated by Walmart, did they pay any attention? Did they not see the threat posed by the power of Walmart over the distribution channel?

    Of course everyone saw it coming. But they still shopped where the price was lowest. The manufacturers had no choice - look what happened to the Kenmore and Craftsman lines at Sears.

  7. Dinosaurs had a good run, they ruled for hundreds of millions of years. Eventually warm blooded species (birds and mammals) took over as the climate cooled; it would be interesting to see what happens if the Earth warms enough to give cold blooded species an advantage.

You have so much knowledge and such good people skills, I suggest you help senior citizens become more net savvy by volunteering some of your time in a nursing home or local senior citizen's center. Hopefully you can educate people like my mother, who just shook her head and said "I don't understand the instructions, it's all in geek".

    It wasn't a law. It was a regulation the FCC made up without the authority to do so. Congress slapped it down, now they will write a real law.

    Obamacare will need to be fixed before too long. Pelosi designed it to bankrupt the insurance companies and it's doing exactly that. What happens next is anyone's guess, but it can't go on the way it is.

    Trump can now say he did all he could to fulfill his campaign promise. Democrats and a few Republicans refused to reform Obamacare, so now when (not if) it collapses, he and Ryan have scapegoats. It remains to be seen what will happen to fix it then but it definitely will put Trump in a better negotiating position.

    it occurs to me to wonder if the researchers are certain it is the alcohol in the wine, or some other factor in the wine.

    That's possible. But I suspect it has more to do with lower stress; either a bit of alcohol helps people relax, or people who have a drink or two were less wound up in the first place. It could well be the latter - many teetotalers I know are weird about other things in their life as well.

    In other words, it goes way beyond marketing. This sounds more like Phase One of the next round of layoffs; get everyone together to share their knowledge and have one more close look for performance reviews, then the axe falls, again.

  22. When you type a password by moving your fingers you are making a gesture. Or you can speak a passphrase and make the gesture with your mouth. Either works for authentication; the advantage of speaking the word versus tapping on the keyboard is that it's harder for someone else to duplicate.

    When is the last time you needed to show a paper ticket to get your boarding pass? Just insert a credit card or driver's license into the kiosk and it finds the ticket for you.

    The Martian might have cost more to make, but in the end it made a half billion dollar profit. Comparing the profit of the two projects makes just as much sense as comparing the costs, doesn't it?
