Well being that ive been buring cd's since 1X drives and was a beta tester for scour.net I thought I would never pay for an mp3. In fact I would say I have moral qualms about doing so. Well last night after installing itunes4 I figured that i might as well see what all the hubbub is about. What a wonderfull idea, there is no better place for a music store than in my music library. An hour, 15 song samples and two videos later I broke down, gave them my credit card and bought a Massive Attack track.
This wont require iPods, but it will sell them and more Apple hardware in the long run. The best way ive found to show off how great the mac platform is is to show people iTunes, and then tell them that almost all Apple apps are that clean and intuitive (almost =iCal). Right now its not about the 'next killer app' thats being brewed in some R&D lab, the killer app is right here - an iPod + iTunes is a reason to buy a computer. For Apple that means making big margins (read: iPod) on a commercial for their other "digital hub" services.
And to think that when I bought my first mac in '99 Apple was the worst plaform for digital media, thank god for Steve Jobs. Oh wait, he is god, my bad.
I cannot imagine Apple giving away their crowing jewel of consumer software so that some PC user who has never given them a dime can use it with the RealJukebox - But If the new digital music store takes off on the mac side than maybe Apple would use a Windows iTunes (and/or AOL version) as a content portal/revenue stream. This would also be a great way to get Quicktime back into the media race. Porting osx to wintel == suicide, porting iTunes just might work.
Hey, I havent missed any interviews (and I have put out a number of resumes in the last week) and I had to call up this morning to hassle about my money with them. I know im not going to be on it for long, it not welfare fer chrissakes, but dammit im going to take this $400 a week and go to Texas while ive got the chance.
(For everyone pissed im taking your money, well we just dropped 28,000 bombs each costing tens of thousands of dollars [at least] on Iraq, I dont think I am the real problem with allocating tax dollars.....And for that one moderator who gave me a "-1 Troll, well you know your fate;)
http://hell.com has always been my favorite. the guestlist has been stagnant lately but the exibitions that go up are pure html driven art.
I remember 4 years ago or so if you followed their doublespeak links to the end of the line it would begin to throw up browser windows faster than you could close them until your entire system ground to a halt and invariably crashed (this is in the win95/netscape 3 days). I still remember where I was and what paper I was working on the first time that happened.
At a quick glance I see six top level postings as +5 Funny.
I wonder how many funny comments you can squeeze out of a space shuttle blowing up? And maybe who should I be more ashamed of, the people posting or the people moderating them all up?
"Now you can post all those tales of late-night dumpster diving, without fear of being branded a terrorist!"
- Hmmmm, when I think dumpster diving 'terrorist' doesn't jump to mind. Words like "bum", "whino," and even "damn trailer trash redneck next door looking through my trash again!" - but never terrorist; so if thats all you guys were worried about then go right ahead.
Another 'cutting edge playlist technology" would certainly be iTunes 'smart playlists.' You can match any number of criteria, including: genre, my rating, play count, artist contains *, and year to make sick and incredibly easy playlists. Oh and live updating, perfect for running a PlayCount: Zero and then having it add new unplayed tracks as you listen. At first I didnt notice it but after tinkering around I now wonder what I ever did before (but then again I get that feeling alot using apple products).
Check it out: http://www.apple.com/itunes/smartplaylists.html
Now realize im kidding with the subject but hear me out. Its not that explaining why OSX on open x86 isnt _ever_ going to happen isnt needed at times; here in response to an otherwise very thought out parent posting qualifies as a good time to do so. But at this point it is hardly "Insightful" anymore. If anything the original parent should be modded down as unintentional trolling for not coming to terms with what any Apple user knows and many others (/. editors with Powerbooks?) are figuring out with a quickness. Apple is a hardware company when it comes to their coffers. Yes to a user it may seem like they sell hardware and software but to their accountants the truth is obvious: sick hardware margins keep Apple in business, period.
So again im not trying to come down on either of the aforementioned posts, please dont get me wrong, im just saying that this is about as tired as explaining why Apple ships a one button mouse.
You mean nothing? I swear im not trolling but honestly MD really didn't do anything for audio outside of the audiophile community (which I am a proud part of). Yes it was technically advanced and has put lossless audio into alot of hands but without the Sony juggernaut it would have died peacefully a decade ago.
I would say an iPod like device would have better luck, huge capacity for lossless audio out the gate, instead of trying to cram a concert into a SD/CF disk.
Hmmmm, Ok point well taken. _If_ they can find a way to make this into a viable model, you are correct. Boatloads of money will follow along with mindshare you cant buy and the ushering in of (IMHO) an utterly new wave in this business.
Some say its risky, others say its stupid. And thats Apples business plan. God I love that company.
Apparently they killed off the Newton and other loved technologies (Hypercard) to get back to the basics of being a computer company and making money..... And now rock star Steve is buying a damn record company?! I dont think this fits into the 'Digital Hub' or the 'Year of the Notebook' shtick they have been preaching. Just when I thought the death knells were over steve got a great idea: "Hey lets waste a ton of money while were barely profitable to buy into an industry that everyone _knows_ is dying...
Sounds like a plan right? Thanks again Apple for keeping me on my toes.
That was the other half of my joke. Not only does the prototype suck but being a human all he ever does is give you "Seven." Glad to see a few people picked up on the not-so-random number generator.
This troll has (apparently) been brought to you by MacJive http://www.hax.com/MacHack/hacks99.html - This looks like someone ran the BSD is Dead post through MacJive and then spruced it up some. That prog is really a riot and anyone running a Mac (esp a pre-OSX box) should waste a day or two playing with it sometime.
That said, the "Slap mah fro!" and "What it is, mama!" (among various other changes) are the giveaways.
That said its still funny as hell, if I had trolled that I wouldnt have been an AC, I would have been proud!
::Basks in beautifull 80* weather with my top down yesterday::
Nah that's all right, I like my priorities where they are - far the fuck away from PA.
(but you do have me on Penn State football, I guess there is _one_ good thing up there, Joe Pa would strike me down if he heard me talking shit about State College)

"Mmmmmmm, framerate."
Don't you mean framerates? I mean I know the platforms framerates arent all that but even my imac g3 400 gets more than _one_.
Not in software update for me but it is right here:
http://www.apple.com/safari/download/
Now lets play with these CSS sheets!

You may have a point about these guys being failed Sci_fi writers, I mean look at the names associated with it.
"VC Rick Patch" - If that isnt a sci-fi name then ive never watched Robotech
"The DaVinci Institute" - Obviously a front for M15
And Cory "Doctor O" - This would have to be the leader at The DaVinci Institute.....
Man with a name like "VC Rick Patch" I could rule the world!

Was just some guy they trained to sit there and yell numbers at them.
Developer: Hey! Gimme a number!!!
Idiot in corner: uh Seven boss!

So I threw an 'h' on Harrisburg. And of course I lived there, how else could I possibly know of the thriving metropolis that is Mechaicsville?
And yes, Excellent Karma is a license to occasionally troll..... But PA is still a shithole.
