Ok, I read this post, and although it sounds a bit like an advertisment, I wouldn't be like all the others to reply and say that you can't be for real. Think about it people, haven't you ever had a gadget or toy that you really liked and told lots of people about? When I got my Zaurus SL-5500, I showed everyone I know, and I've posted about it here. I'm a living advertisment for that thing, but I have no vested interest in it. I just got a new cell phone, a Samsung N400, and I've been showing off the polyphonic ring tones and the color lcd and the web access to all my friends and family. Just because he loves his Segway HT and wants others to know how cool he thinks it is, doesn't mean he has to be working for Segway!

Just a small note specific to the parent post, "i don't think it's for everyone" I'm glad you added that part. You said it replaced your car, but there's no way it could do that for me. I drive an hour (35 miles) into Pittsburgh, and an hour home every day for work, and I know that I couldn't do that going at top speeds of 12 mph (or whatever it does) =D It'd be a cool toy, but I can't afford to pay that much for a toy. I only paid $550 for my car :-P

Apparently the reviewer doesn't understand all that much about PC hardware. (S)he claims that the machine was slow because of the size of the hard drive!? The only way I can think of that mattering is if it causes you to have less swap space. Yeah, that drive is deinitely too small, but that won't make the machine slower! If it's a slow drive, then that will cut back performance, but when it comes to the speed of access "size doesn't matter". You could make a 3 gig drive that spins at 7200 rpms, and has 8 mb cache, and could be blazing (almost) and still small. That comment discredited everything (s)he said to me. Also, if it's taken from an old notebook, does that mean it's a 2.5" drive?

I have one more question that (s)he never answered. (S)he said that all but one of them didn't have a monitor included, but never said which came with one. Either I mis-read it, or there's some important information missing here. A 1 GHz system with a monitor for only $199 is incredible. Anyone have any info on that?

I see lots of people asking this question, and I think I have the solution. I think the main reason something like this would be posted is because many people may hear about it in various places, and it seems like a scary sort of bad thing. Michael was pointing out that although you may hear that there's lots of under-handed evil going on with this, it's all hogwash actually. Without pointing things like this out, stoopid people (like me) might not have realized that this isn't such a big deal afterall. Had I just heard about the story somewhere else, I might have thought that rh was trying to abuse the GPL, and that's a Bad Thing (tm).

Actually, from my take on the whole matter, the title of this article on slashdot was slightly misleading (never!!)... It isn't actually the DMCA v. Monsterpatterns (or whatever the site was called). from the article:

The companies invoked the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), which shields Internet service providers from liability if they comply with takedown requests

The DMCA's involvement was keeping the ISP from getting in trouble for breaking the hosting contract or for any other reason. The DMCA part didn't seem to actually be about the PATTERNS, it was about the web site while the legal procedings are happening. That's how I interperted that at least, and feel free to prove me wrong.

on a side note, does this whole dumpster diving situation reming anyone of that garbage man (er... sanitation worker, to be P.C.) who saw a McDonalds cup in the trash and peeled the little game piece off it and won a million dollars? ;-)

I'll be kind and refrain from saying "RTFA", but in the article it mentions that gas pumps will charge two seperate prices... to avoid having to retro-fit old cars, but it would also solve this. If the car getting gas has a GPS system (or odometer based one) then it won't charge gas tax, but will tack on their milage tax. If the car doesn't have a system in it, (or presumably if it's malfunctioning), it will charge them the 28 cent (or whatever it was) gas tax. It accomidates all types, whether it's right or not ;-)

Okay, other people have stated plenty (more than enough) times that there shouldn't be tax on miles outside of OR, or that there may not be annual inspections, or that they can illegally change odometer readings, but I have two points against this that are neither of these.

First, my car is slightly old (1990), and not in perfect shape by any means. Occasionally the spedometer decides not to work... when this happens, the odometer doesn't move forward either, and in essence, I'd drive tax free. Secondly, I used to own a 1986 Cavalier, and the odometer in that only read up to 100,000 miles. It rolled over twice on me. How would they know how many times it's rolled over?

just a few thoughts of my own... I do appreciate other peoples thoughts and opinions, and I'm glad to see some people are coming up with ideas. ;-)

    • This whole thing is wildly inaccurate. Rounding errors, ballot stuffers, dynamic IPs, firewalls. If you're using these numbers to do anything important, you're insane.
