I doubt Jobs would ever see it this way. But turning a blind eye to piracy is away to get huge market share. Did you hear MS complain loudly about piracy during their climb to monopoly status? Not really, it worked to their advantage.
Wasn't that how it used to be? Or have I just been watching too many movies? I thought that was what created the near mythical (and recently reveiled) "deep throat" source.
Time to review the X-files "Plausible Deniability."
In is interesting to watch the hype and commentary around AMD and Apple.
I have been a share holder in both since 2001 (not a huge share holder, but a few hundred shares). Anyway, AMD & Apple announce financial results about the same time (maybe the same day) and I noticed that they could announce almost identical results on a per share basis. Yet Apple stock would soar on the news while AMD stock would drop like a rock.
Apple does do PR much better than AMD, but I have been a long term beleiver in AMD.
Spending energy on the libertaian party isn't a bad idea. Even if you disagree with them. Until the Dem's and Repub's think that there is a REAL threat from third party canidates then they aren't going to change their ways.
I don't think anyone is particularly happy with the ways things are going in the US today. Take a look at this poll. With numbers like that significant numbers of republicans are getting upset by the government as well.
Film yourself, make sure someone (maybe even yourself) posts it to the internet (Google Video, youTube, etc.). And then instead of hiding in a closet and calling your lawyer; hire an agent and ride that wave of publicity as far as it will take you.
If you look at Dell's stock versus HP's, part of the difference has to do with Dell's reputation for owning the customer. There's a sense they own the entire margin and have higher profits because they sell directly. It makes them appear more valuable to Wall Street.'
If Wall Street really believes that, then that just shows how stupid Wall Street can be.
Don't make the mistake of thinking that Microsoft wants their customers to like them. Microsoft has several problems, some legit, and some they caused themselves.
The legit problems is that since they have a virtual monopoly their biggest compeditor is the version of Windows (or Office, etc.) they sold customers a few years ago. Hence the only way to grow is to "encourage" people to buy new software even if they don't really need it.
They have a history of upsetting their userbase. Given that they have a virtual monopoly they don't really care if their users like them. MS takes a corporate mafia approach to sales, trying to strong arm customers into paying them off. I've seen these articles in the nears every few years for most of the last decade.
I keep hoping it will drive defections to Apple's OS X or Linux.
Politicians care about getting re-elected. If enough people convince them that a particular issue is the deciding issue when they go into a voting both, that is what matters. Yea PAC's can sway a politicians vote, but only because he needs the money to try to get re-elected!
Sorry, but who thinks Andrew Tanenbaum has credibility as a visionary after his 1992 discussion with Linus?
I'll beleive Microkernals are the future IFF Linus decides to rewrite linux as a microkernal.
Otherwise microkernals remind me of the bureaucracy in large companies. If I can get 5 or 6 hours of real work done a week, its a GOOD week. The rest of the time is dealing with, or fighting mindless bureaucracy. I don't want to handicap my computer the same way. If I wanted it to be slow, I'd run windows.
I wish it were true, but I don't think the term "rarely used" applies to the states secrets privilege any more. Unfortunately it is used far too often, and even used when there is no state secret but the need to cover some body's hind quarters.
I would say not only did they not understand the term beta, but they may have never heard the term backup either.
Really if you are going to mess around with your harddrive partition atleast have your important data backed up, if not the whole drive. Flash drives are cheap and easy to back up data to (if you don't have an other computer handy), as are external usb or firewire drives.
Some time in the 1990's everyone went from nice elegant resumes on wedding invitation grade paper to long buzz-word filled machine readable resumes stored in text files. The reason then was big companies feed all resumes into resume databases and then do key word searches when looking to fill a position. It was no longer important to have a stand out hard copy, it had to be something that would get caught by the key word search.
Extrapolating out we will eventually have news paper articles that read like the meta tags in trolling porn ads that show up when searching for kitchen appliances. (Actually that is probably the single best thing about Google is the removal of such "search engine porn spam!")
The companies still want our money. So they should be told that if they want my money they have to give me the product that I want, not the product they want me to have.
This is really a question of choosing between 2 evils. There is no "perfect solution" because we don't live in a perfect world. There are only compromise solutions. so you have to ask which is worse spam or commercial whitelists?
I have to say that using yahoo e-mail I rarely get large ammounts of SPAM that makes it past their spam filter. And it has been a really Long time since something was mistakenly put in the SPAM folder.

See that is the issue. I want manditory prison time for anyone asking for a SSN for reasons other than reporting income to the government.
:-)
Lets have prisons over crouded with receptionists and nurses.
I wonder if they would have been ok with a credit card number?
Home of the sheep and land of the baaaaa!

I'm confused. Are your customers running $399 desktops with XP home in their datacenter?

Voting is important.
Try telling that to Apple.

Write to your senator complaining about this. (This of course assumes you can claim to be a voting US citizen.)
Or it could just mean all those rumors of the need to rework the new windows again are actually true.
Besides I'd preffer MS to spend billions on R&D instead of billions on marketing their products to pointy haired bosses.

Perhaps it should be called the CYA privilege.

Just one more reason for me to hate Microsoft.
So true. Perhaps I should cross the line, say really wild crap and retire on adsense revenue.
The companies still want our money. So they should be told that if they want my money they have to give me the product that I want, not the product they want me to have.
Hey I can't fault them for trying. If I could get people to beta test my product while paying me $1000 for the honor, I might go back to writing code!
