Thats how it is bad for them. The free versions of the software are basiclly demos. If the demo doesn't work well who is likely to pony up and buy the main product?
BTW, from what I read of the article it doesn't look like they used the free version of Oracle. It listed a unlimited cpu lic. fee of $19K.
I was impressed with some of the features of MySQL. Since I looked at it years ago it looks like it has come a long way. However I now work at a big company with a site lic. for Oracle, its unlikely I'll use it professionally.
The first difference is the opt-in nature of deciding to buy an auto with OnStar.
When the topic of tracking people comes up, I'm suprised to see the lack of discussion of cell phones. Currently the phone net work can track you to the nearest cell. This is how OJ was found leading to the famous "low speed chase" in the white Bronco.
I'm not criminally minded, but I have to say if I were to commit a serious crime, step one would be to use someone else's car. For minor crimes, people will just steal plates.
Heck if someone "swapped" plates on my car it might be weeks before I even noticed. I just don't look at my own plates that much.
So basiclly I see this as a move that will increase vehical theft, and even worse increase car jackings.
Ok the article appears to be slashdotted. Perhaps later I can get a look at this keyboard.
I would welcome a trend to smaller keyboards with fewer keys. The growth of specialized keys on keyboards has really gotten out of hand in my opinion. What reason is there for 100+ keys on the keyboard?
How about a new survey question of "How many keys does your keyboard have that you have NEVER used?"
My anecdotal evidence shows a growing number of women in computer science or related fields. I was in college from 1988 to 1992, and when I venture back onto an engineering campus I am shocked at the number of women in CS labs or CS classes.
I just got back from ApacheCon where I would say that 10% of the attendees were women. Granted thats not much, but it is much more than I expected at an apache con. What really surprised me was the number of women at apache con that were redheads.... Too bad I had a wife and child at home!;-)
First, computers are tools, nothing more. If you don't understand that, get into another line of work.
The only way you can get the resources you need for your job is to show the benefit the business will receive from giving you the resources. Can you save them time/money by increasing the connectivity between different systems? Is the time/money enough to off set the additional expense?
If you work in IS or IT, you are overhead . You are an expense management will always be looking to cut. Get used to it. I can understand you being over worked if you have a poorly designed network supporting that many users. You need to provide a vision of what you can do with additional staff and resources and that vision better help the company do something better than it is doing now. (Faster order processing, more accurate inventory management, better customer support, etc.)
If you can show a business justification for what you want to do, then you will never be able to talk a language that management can understand. In that case you need to give up on the dream of being a manager, and start looking for a job somewhere else.
Just watched it again last night. Becomes more alarming everytime I do watch it.
Mainly because there is much more evidence to support the conclusions of the movie every day. (Yes I not the change won't come in 6 days. But I'm no longer sure it will take 100's of years.)
Basiclly this sounds like a defence against LAMP marketing statement. I belive that Java will remain popular in older large corporations. (Where I work they only recognize Java and ASP for web development. Everthing else is discouraged.)
But I think Perl/PHP/etc. will continue to gain popularity ammoung smaller companies and pure web companies. (Ie. Companies that are more progressive in nature.)
Maybe I'm an old timer, but I like the good old days when page width and font were ALWAYS chosen by the user. You don't know what browser, what os, what screen size, what device a user has to view a page.
Regardless of monitor real-estate I run browsers at approximately 800x600. On a good montitor that means I can get two browsers side by side. (On my laptop here at ApacheCon it takes 2/3's of my screen. I take notes in the other 1/3!)
I read the whole series through 3 times in my childhood. It was nice to at least once go back and read in chronological order. I'm thinking of doing so again now that 18 years has passed since I last read all of the books.
That is the problem with Dialog boxes poping up TOO much. Its just like the story of the boy who cryed wolf. No one reads or pays attention to them anymore. Its worse that if they weren't there at all, because now no one reads them when they are really important!
A freind of mine keeps telling me that most of Google's web applications (gmail) are AJAX based.
But to me it seems like AJAX makes it hard for a site to be referenced and indexed. So what is the common ground between wanting slick technology for your website, but also wanting it be indexable by search engines?
I ask because I am thinking of creating a web service, but architechture wise for it to be useful it needs to be googleable!:-)
Actually, this might be kinda nice, because all the popular crap will get expensive and you might be able to find some gems really cheaply.
This is the only argument I can agree with for this pricing scheme. (I agree with almost ALL arguments against it, because well it is a stupid idea.) Since most good music is not ever the "most popular" then music I want to buy will be cheaper.
I love what iTunes and iPods are doing for my Apple stock, but I agree 99 cents seems a little high for near free distribution and lower than CD quality audio. In-general I hate the major record labels. Here is why. Almost since their invention CD's have been cheaper to produce than cassette tapes. But CD's have always sold for 160% or more of the cost of a cassette of the same music (granted it is hard to find cassettes these days and they do SUCK). The artist should be getting the same royalties regardless of format (yea, I know, I'm thinking like life is fair or something) and the record label does need to make some profit, but where does ALL that extra from the sell of a CD go?
And finally since mp3's and AAC files are about the same sound quality as a good tape (and cost MUCH less to produce and distribute), they should be priced similarly.
There are some games and sound software that do similar things on the Mac using the isight. I soon expect to see the user interface from Minority Report in operation on one of the more enlightened operations systems (read: non-microsoft).
I think there are a large number of people waiting for this product. This might make me buy a second mac mini. I know several freinds thinking of using Mini's as a Myth front end. What I want to see with this is 5.1 audio support on the mini!!
The government is a nessasary evil. There is no good governments, only some are less evil than others. We do not live in a perfect world, therefore there are no perfect solutions.
What I think others are trying to say is that the best goverment we can hope for is one whose powers are the bare minimum needed to be able to accomplish its goals. This is generally considered a Libertarian philosophy. McCarthy like witch hunts are not needed to defend a government from outside influences.
Further the Soviet Union was never more than a nuclear threat to the US and the rest of the world. They did not have an economy capable of supporting a military attack on the US main land, except through nuclear attack. The doctrine of mutually assured annihilation (or MAD) made it unlikely that there would ever be a nuclear attack on the US or its allies.
My wife knows some indians who moved back to Bangalore from the US. Their house in bangalore cost the same as their house in the US, and their commute to work doubled! I don't think IT professionals in India are much cheaper than $25 all things considered. Everything I hear about Bangalore is that its like the valley during the late 90's!
That is a move from RTP, NC USA to Bangalore, India. RTP's cost of living is probably mid-way between NYC and BFE rural town pop. 600. A 2800 sqft house will run about $300,000 to $350,000. Don't expect a new house here for less than $300K but older smaller ones might be as cheap as $150K. Apartments run $700 to $1400 a month.
I would be willing to move to a smaller city if I could take my IT job with me.
I personally would have put the Climate change data higher on the list. But some good biology/medical work was recognized as well.
Microsoft not thinking about security is news?! Tell me when a microsoft product has reasonable security, that will be news.
;-)
But I suppose that for the protection of the unwashed, we should inform them of new flaws in MS products.

Cause or Effect?
Could children with early stage cancer be more likely to catch a cold?
Really the chances of a child getting cancer is already so low that multipling it by 1.08 doesn't increase the odds all that much. IMHO anyway.

I have to say that even with enlarged fonts Windows SUCKS at anything over 1280x1024. It just doesn't scale smoothly.

Great! I'm already worried about identity theft. This will just feed my paranoia.

So any chance we have Linux support out of the box?
How can a hardware review be posted on slashdot without a list of compatible open source OS's?
