If it could be steered into a safe de-orbit, would it not be possible to steer it into a rendezvous with the space station and either mothball it, refit it there - or use it as an attraction for the next space tourist who came along? After all, if the space station is looking for a purpose, why not a repair shop? Its always seemed very wasteful to me to let all those raw materials that cost so much to get into orbit burn up on re-entry. You could even put it into Lunar orbit(although I guess the fuel needed would be prohibitive) to use as raw materials should a lunar base ever be made.
I have a dimmer switch, at what point does 'on' become 'off?' Halfway? When there's a single photon detectable? When its too dark to read McLuhan? How about a computer monitor - different pixels are on or off at the same time, what is the implication of that for the grid being a single bit system? What if I have two lights in the room? ... I presume that the software runs automatically without asking for your permission. So are they actually installing unautorised software on your system, in which case could you countersue? Especially if it has bugs etc. which could be exploited by hackers.
Obvious rubbish! Get a 30cm rule, hold it at arms length. Can you see the millimeter markings? There's 300. Even better if it has 0.5 mm markings, since there will be 600. I have no idea of the truth or otherwise of this, but it got me thinking about EULAs. With recent suggestions that people who do not patch their systems should be held responsible or even fined, and the fact that you can only patch by agreeing to a EULA, aren't we damned if we do and damned if we don't patch? As a worst case, someone could release some software with a really good (for the user) EULA and then, when it needs patching, slam in lots of restrictive things that they wanted all along.
Now this sounds good, but that's one error in a thousand so we can suppose at least three mis-identifications for the September 11th event. I know that no system is perfect, but the distress that this could cause would seem to demand even greater accuracy.
It also needed an aircraft carrier and helicopters etc. to pick it up. If you put some sort of steering mechanism, like a paraglider, presumably the pickup gets cheaper and easier as the search area gets smaller. (The Russians landed on land, so that is also an option). I was thinking about reusable capsules, rather than a new one every time, which was my reasoning behind the heat shield using shuttle-style tiles. Plus they should be easier to fit/ replace on a symmetrical object, rather than the individually fitted shuttle tiles.
